Skulduggery Pleasant, easily. Heck, half the time I don't remember what happens in the books, I just remember that the main character is a skeleton detective. That casts magic. And wears a suit.
That's all you need to know.

I'm pretty fond of the Scott Pilgrim books as well, but they're both a comic book and trumped by Skulduggery Pleasant.

EDIT:
In case a detective in a suit that casts magic and doesn't have skin is too epic for you to mentally image...

I usually don't like to use the phrase "badass", but I can't really think of anything better.

Steven Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen series. Best set of mature fantasy books I've ever read. They're complex, full of interesting characters, rarely have a cliche, and are just generally perfect. 10 books in the series, 9 are out and the final one is published later this year (unlike George R R Martin who doesn't know what a fucking publishing date is. Much as I like his books I do hate that man).

If you ever want to immerse yourself in an awesome fantasy world created by an author with degrees in archaeology and anthropology (means he writes a good world), give these a go. My only warning is that you won't understand much of what's happening on your first read-through. But then ever re-read gets more and more awesome after that.

Other favourite series right now is the Joe Abercrombie - The First Law series. His new stuff set in the same world is excellent as well.

The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. Great set of books. Some of my favorites.
This series is possibly my current favourite. Read the first one a month ago, when I got back from Africa, I read the other two. The only problem was that I ran out of books after I finished the third one...drat.

Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R.Martin. Still waiting for Dance with Dragons. Any time now, George, any time.

I've just started the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett and it is awesome.

Does manga count? Because Genshiken takes the cake for me.

Holy shit, that sounds good.
I'm off to read it!

OT: Seems like there's a lot for me to catch up on in this thread. For now, I'm going to have to go with The Discworld Series, though.
You'll enjoy it, I promise. It kind of changed my life. :D

.....Unfortunately, the second season of the anime fell flat and was kinda bad.

DragonLance, because the novels are written AMAZINGLY! I spent a whole, unbroken 48 hours reading the "Dark Disciple" trilogy. That's just one example.
Also,Artemis Fowl. Colfer knows how to write an Urban Fantasy. Don't believe me? Read the books. They're pretty damn good.

I fucking love A Song of Ice and Fire. GRRM has created such a vivd world that even though it isn't nearly as detailed as Tolken (who I hate) I still find myself wishing I could go sit on the banks of the Trident and search for Rheagar's rubies, or go and Marvle at the masive wall of ice that keeps the wildlings and something much more sinister at bay. Or to watch the Tourny of the Hand and see that shit go down (if you read the book you know what I'm talking about they just filmed it for the HBO series). I might even want to go to the Twins and meet the Frey's of pnly to punch Lord Walder in the face.

I've never been good at just accepting things though. Even in a Song of Ice and Fire, I always asked "Why?".

And George always gave me an answer.
I don't know about that I've always found Arya a little unbeleivable with all the shit she gets up to.

Also I just curious who you think Jon Snow's mother is.
It's physically possible to do what Arya does, as far as getting across oceans and whatnot. But she's extremely brave for a child and seems curious and naive. My sister was a lot like her growing up. Not even serious things really threatened her--I was always the sibling to say "This isn't reasonable", whereas she normally just went headlong into things. I suppose that's why I find her character more believable--because I've got my own Arya. I enjoyed the parts with her and the Hound though. You could almost sense that he had a soft spot for her.

Lyanna Stark.

I don't think it's Eddard's bastard, and I think that's why Ned was always so quiet about Jon. Ned's personality is very cold and I don't see him fathering a bastard. To protect Lyanna's honor I can't see him telling everybody it was hers, though, and he'd rather keep the fact that he's got an illegitimate heir under raps.

He's not really that old and his age doesn't hamper him at all. He's the same misanthrope every author almost seems obligated to create in every fantasy universe and the author of Ranger's Apprentice almost ignores physics and reality when he made a stumpy ranger being able to take on barbarians by himself. Not to mention a 14 y/o boy being able to get stomped on by a horse and live.
Someone doesn't know the meaning of misanthrope. Oh and the "fantasy universe" "ignores physics and reality" in the same sentence made me lol.
Someone doesn't know how to read.

To make your universe believable, you need reasons and you need explanations at least. If you don't have that, it's assumed your world is earth-like. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What the author of Ranger's Apprentice did was ignore the fact that by sheer strength alone, a grown man would overpower a boy in a fight. On top of that, you're talking about barbarians who make a living off of the swing of their swords and axes. People who know how to fight. Yet, apparently they're beaten by a bunch of kids.

Don't buy that.

"Misanthropy is a generalized dislike, distrust, disgust, contempt and hatred of the human species, "

Halt exhibits at least a few of those traits. Misanthropy is also something people consider cool these days as well. If not misanthropy, the author still went for "generic mysterious ranger" with Halt, which I think is even worse, as writing about true misanthropy can be entertaining at the least. But when the character that's said to be anti-social and feared by common people takes an annoying 14 year old as an apprentice I draw the line. Halt breaks his own character bounds and in short, it doesn't make fucking sense.

Glad to see some of my favourite series being mentioned here; The Takeshi Kovac's books by Richard K Morgan are fantastic, a real chance find for me, and one of the best little finds I've made, really interesting idea's in there, and Kovac's himself is one of my favourite characters ever. Song of Ice and Fire books are also well up there for me, although I'm getting tired of waiting for GRRM to finish the next book, been waiting a long time for that one. The Sword of Truth seriers I read up to a point, was quite a while ago, so cant remember where I got to, but I was quite far into the story. The Recluse Saga is what I'm currently reading, just finished The Chaos Balance a few minutes ago, another series I havn't read for quite some time, but I'm really enjoyinh re-reading them while I wait for...

The Crippled God, the tenth and final book in the Malazan Fallen series. This is my favourite series ever, I love the clever characters, and the brilliant deck of dragons idea, and I love the tangled plots and subplots, th little twists and turns. If anyone reading this thread is a fantasy fan and hasn't read these books I can only give you my highest recommendation to go out and do so, very much worth the time.

The Crippled God is out for janurary I think, and I may just have time to re-read the series in time to be up to date and fresh with everything so far.
