Boba Fett.
Boba Fett never died, he escaped a few months later. but it still sucked.

As for the topic, when ever you have to choose wihich squad member to save in the Mass Effect games.

This from Serenity:

Wash's death. It was so masterfully done...

Also, as mentioned previously, the end of The Professional.

Boromir's death in Lord of the Rings. It was great in the book, and the film did not disappoint.

And from a game, my Grey Warden's sacrifice in Dragon Age: Origins.

...Jesus?

Does it have to be death though? If incurable ailments counts I vote Myshkin from The Idiot.

Goddamn! I should have known better than to click to LOST spoilers. Awh.

OT: The last few Harry Potter books had some really good ones.
I cried my heart out when Doby died.

One of the endings in Cave Story has Curly Brace died after she sacrificed her oxygen tank for you. Its quite sad (but in the true ending she lives ^_^).

Shepherd Book and Wash... both sad...
They don't fit with the OP One is off screen and the other is arbitrary.

If your going to include them I'll trump you with Elsworth.

edit: Sorry they both actually die on-screen, one just happens to be mortally wounded off screen. I think my point stands.

he didnt,i remember reading in a big hardcore star wars fan magazine that he escaped in his jet pack and retired or something i cant remember
He actually fell in/escaped no less than 3 times.

The first time, he blew up his jetpack, and fellow bounty hunter Dengar found his dying body, and nursed him back to health.

I can't remember the second and third times offhand.

The end of The Professional.

I don't to give it away so just watch the movie :D
That's the film otherwise known as Leon, right? In which case I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Both Gladiator and V for Vendetta have well-portrayed character deaths.
The main character at the end in each; Maximus finds peace at last, V dies taking down the last of the people who ran the camp he was imprisoned in, finishing his quest for vengeance - how could such a man live past its completion?

Yup, thats the movie. It's called The Professional in America and Leon elsewhere.

I read every post and i can't believe mine didn't come up. I was sure it would have been number 1 on everyone list.

Screw Aeris; her sacrifice was needed to use holy. You know, taking your call back to the planet didn't mean calling her on the phone. Screw Lost. Screw Anime. Screw Modern Warfare.
Screw Saint Row 2.

The one i'm talking about is this one: The dead of Zack in Crisis Core - Final Fantasy 7
Its the most painfull hard and great dead ever.
It a long one, but you HAVE TO FIGHT the final fight and watch as he lose everything, get cripple and die. BEST DEAD EVER.

I would consider what happened to Winston at the end of 1984 death, and I literally threw my book across the room in anger and sadness as soon as I realized the story was over, because I had really been rooting for him and Julia.

Also, for some reason, Blood Diamond got to me... I didn't particularly like the acting, or the drama, but I did enjoy a few of the characters and the setting, and at the end when you-know-who got shot, I was bummed.

Its from book The Subtle Knife from His Dark Materials trilogy.
Lee Scoresby sacrifices himself to save Stanislaus Grumman because they are being chased by some Russian soldiers and Grumman is that more important one that has to survive.Things I liked about it were:

1. It wasnt that kind of sacrifice when the guy says "Go without me" and then we only have his world that he is dead. Almost whole chapter is about his fight.

2. He kills 30 soldiers and shoot down one zeppelin before he dies so his sacrafice is not vain.

3. All that time he is with his deamon so he doesn't die alone.

4. He is not most important character but you are still attached to him.

Thats probably all. The point is that most of these deaths are done pretty poorly so you have that feeling (or at least I have) that he should not died or he should die better way. I really liked this one because it just felt heroic so...
I agree. That was really good. I can't remember exactly, but the last line in the chapter is so touching, and really mad me stop and say "wow".

In games it would be in "the Darkness"
When Jenny is killed before your eyes as the darkness forces you to watch, and then you kill yourself. I love that game, and hope to god they make another somehow.

Alice in Stephen King's Cell. I'm not sure why, but that one absolutely destroyed me, but it was pretty well done. Granted, in any of King's books you can hardly call anyone "Good" just "Less sucky than the other guy"
Yeah, that was completely out of the blue. I also have to add...

all of the characters at the end of Under the Dome. I especially liked Andy and Chef's, even if it was fucking weird.

Yeah, that was kind of sad too. At least they went out in a blaze of glory, and accepting of their deaths.

They were...true warriors...*sniff*...

the death of wolfwood from trigun.
both manga and anime (he dies differently in both)
... we agree on a lot.

I still cry whenever I watch Wolfwood's final monologue in the anime series.

"In spite of the profession I've chosen, I've... never actually made a confession. ...I did not want to die this way!"

And seeing him so peaceful next to Vash... yeah. Tears.

It's tough to say favorite but the most significant death in Season 1 of The Wire was the most harrowing thing I've ever seen on TV or in film.
