Its not a video game, but the stargate series
Agreed, and since you brought it up, I'm going to get something off my chest that's been bugging me:
[rage]
SINCE WHEN DID THE STARGATE HAVE A LIMITED RANGE!?!?!?
[/rage]
ok, I'm done now.

... and back on topic, Star Trek too. Some franchises need to be brought to an end while they're still ahead.
I haven't watched Stargate in a while. Is it really bad now?
Well yes and no. I haven't been following Stargate Universe all that closely, only ever turning to it on commercial breaks when watching some other show, but I do think a lot of the original spirit is missing. IE it's too dark and gritty for my taste. And as my previous rage indicate, every time I hear them talk about the "Destiny (that's the name of the ship they're trapped on apparently) being out of range." I want to rage at them. Since when did the bloody Stargate have a limited range?????

A lot of the games that have been mentioned thus far haven't really ''become trash'', but simply changed the people they cater to.

Take Fallout. It went from an RPG to a shooter - it was still a good game, however. There's nothing about it that became trash, it just changed direction in a rather drastic way.

Moreover, some of the franchises changed hands and the companies which find themselves owning a certain franchise may not have past experience, or good past experience, with making a certain type of game - thus they stick to what they do best.

I mean come on the Brotherhood of steel are good guys now ?! The Enclave the evil ones ? WTF Bethesda ?
At worst the Brotherhood were neutral in Fallout 1 and 2. In Tactics, they were, in fact, the good guys seeing as they were providing security, medicine and other technology to those residents of the Midwestern US. In Fallout 2, the Enclave were obviously the bad guys, doing things like gunning down people as they exited vaults and kidnapping entire village populations for various experiments in addition to acting like little more than Raiders (only exceptionally well equipped) in every encounter.

Final Fantasy. 1-6 were god tier. 7, and 8 were blah so so, 9 was awesome, but ever since then its just been one huge let down after another... in fact, I refuse to even buy 13 especially after seeing the reviews on it
Sorry, but did you actually play FF1? How old were you?
Why yes, I still play it to this day. As for how old I was when I first played it? Hmm... Not sure really... 8 or 9? maybe 10 though I don't see how my age at the time would affect the game's utter winsauce.

Why? Too hard/confusing you think?

Assassin's creed. The first one (on pc) will always have a spot in my heart.

The second one didn't feel as exotic due to the setting and the lower overall quality of the city design (It felt less organic.) AC: Brotherhood was a little bit better, as elements from the first game returned, but it still didn't feel that awesome most of the time (mostly due to the fact that what was once excellent swordplay is now a cheap kill chain), and the story by now has gotten out of hand.

- Command and Conquer 4 slaughtered the franchise.
- Far Cry 2 had zero connection to the first game and wasn't nearly as much fun.
- GTA Series took a wrong turn after Vice City.
- Rayman 3 ruined it by going 3D!
- Doom 3 left a sour taste in my mouth.
- Starwars Knights of The Old Republic 2 never reached the level of the first game.
- World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade because I never reached the same level of elitist a-hole as in vanilla.

I used to enjoy PoP, but the last two have been huge piles of rotting crap. Not to mention that movie they made. :shudder:

Fire Emblem franchise is going in the wrong direction. The first game Fire Emblem(2003) was amazing(it's also my 2nd favourite game of all time). It was had original and fun gameplay, with a good story. The next game, Shadow Dragon(2004) wasn't as good. It was shorter, with an unoriginal, but well presented story. It also made a gameplay change I disliked. Most of the character felt generic. Fire Emblem: Path of Radience(2005, I think) was a step in the right direction. It wasn't as good as the first Fire Emblem, but it was better than the secound. It also was the first one on console. The story wasn't as unoriginal as the secound, but not as original as the first. Their were great steps taken in gamplay though. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn I have not finished. Fire Emblem:Shadow Dragon(2009) was the worst of the series. Bad story and less gameplay features. It's still an OK series, but lost the standard it started on.
Shadow Dragon was actually a remake of the absolute first title on the NES. Fire Emblem has a huge history of games but has stayed relatively unchanged. If they do some changes in a new and original installment in the series I think it would be far away from trash.

Resident Evil...Not sure I support much after the first and second.

CoD I would've stopped before it left WWII.

Splinter Cell seems to be moving in a bad direction.

No contest. Mostly because I don't really dislike anything enough to actually say it. Any game I liked but don't anymore due to poor design choices I just chalk up to a declining developer quality and let it go. There's no reason to get mad at any series.

I know it isn't a game franchise, but the first thing that came to my mind was Linkin Park. The last two albums to me were almost complete shit, while I still love listening to the first two.

As for a game franchise, I'm having a bit of difficulty thinking of one at the moment. Got nothing coming to mind unfortunatly, but haven't had much sleep so my thought process is a bit... Slow to say the least.
To be fair the were changing their style and trying to get away from the now infamous Bastard child of rap and metal that was NU metal, (to be honest I kinda like NU metal)

I quite like some of their newer stuff, Like The catalyst and Waiting for the end, also New divide (less new obviously)

I mean I dont see how a thousand suns is much of a change of style from Minutes to midnight and people didnt seem to mind that one, though in your case I supose you prefer their old style, which is fine

No, no..Just that FF1 is pretty damn old. Maybe you are just older than me, but when I was 10, FF6 had just come out, and FF1 was pretty ancient in graphics and battle-system (It came out for the NES), and there's alot of people that just go "Oh, all games up to this point were awesome, the rest are shit", and haven't played the early, early incarnations of the game.
I can think of a few people that have said "All Metroid up to Other M were awesome!" and they forget all the Metroids that came for NES/Gameboy and SNES (not that they were bad, per se, they just haven't played them).
I have played FFII-FFVIII (still haven't bothered with PS2-PS3 FF), but I have seen FF1, and I can't for any reason see why I would bother to play it. The graphis are shit, the battle-system is far too simple and uninspiring, and the story is..Generic, as far as I know.

My point: Just because it's part of our nostalgia, doesn't make it awesome.

The only franchise that I can think of that no one's mentioned yet (probably because most of you have never even played the games lol) are Armored Core.

I never played 1, but it looks pretty cool. I enjoyed 2 a lot, and 3 was amazing. In fact, 3 was so good that they took it and essentially re-hashed it like 4 times making what amounted to $60 expansion packs each time. But good God they were awesome!

Then I bought Armored Core 4 For Answer and... wow... they literally changed everything about the game. The controls suck, the customization is horrendously over-complicted, lots of parts about the game are just broken altogether, they switched out cool-looking robots for ugly, impractical-looking robots, and it looks like they forgot to colour the game (seriously, I'd swear 90% of the game was black and white).

And now they've announced Armored Core 5. I haven't seen any gameplay yet, but from the trailer and screenshots so far it at least looks like they opted for the B&W levels and spiky, ugly, impractical robots from AC4. And I'm really doubting they're going to streamline the customization or revert the controls back to that of AC3.
This, though in all fairness the PS2 games got a bit shoddy towards the end too (coughLastRavencough)

Graphics don't mean a damn thing, all FFs have a simplistic battle system, and yeah, the story was fairly generic, but up until the SNES most stories were... and hell, even today 90% of video game stories still are :p I say you're missing out on a god tier game, but hey, whatever floats your boat man.

As for Metroid... the first 3 games were the best :p There's a reason Super Metroid is so widely known and popular. Though 2 was my personal favorite.

Weeeell..If graphics don't mean crap (and I agree, they mostly do not), and "all FF battle-systems are simplistic", which I can agree with up to a point (FFIV had the class-system, and FFVI had the new Esper-system concernig how you learn magic and summons), what is then left? Yeah. Story. Story is the main reason I play any FF-game, still foolishly hoping that it will be as aw3sum as FFVI or FFVII. And since FF1 really doesn't blow my mind, I don't see a reason in giving it a go.
