It's never referred to in-game as a gun, that's just what fans call it because they are lazy.

It's a "handheld port device", guns are weapons or devices that shoot something, it opens portals.

I thought it shot portals.

Someone mentioned Chrono Trigger on the first page, and that made me laugh. Lucca's weapons are all guns. No time travel needed.

I'm going to go with Morrowind because that is my favorite game ever. A lot of other favorite games fit the bill though. Monkey Island (I wanted to put in The Longest Journey, but those damn guards...), Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda), Some of the Castlevanias count, Demigod, Tron 2.0 (not really guns), Diablo, and Guild Wars.

I'd like to throw a nod to Mad World because for the short time I played it, I never saw a gun. I know that doesn't hold true for the rest of the game, because I did see some gameplay footage with a boss fight. Regardless, it just goes to show that you can have gratuitous violence without guns.
