What is your guys favorite(s) historical movies, now when I say historical, I don't mean like a documentary on historical events. I mean any movie that takes place during historical events.

Such as one of my favorite historical movies is the patriot and the last samuarai, they don't need to be movies that is competely based on the events, such as the the last samuarai took place during an historical period but not all events in the movie accutaly happened.

Well, at the moment I'll point out The Crossing, because it's fresh in my mind from History class. I thought it was pretty damned good.

My God, the Patriot was just painful to get through, I'm a history student I was just sitting there yelling "No Mel Gibson, you can't have a farm of freed slaves, that doesn't work." and "oh, the British burning women and children in a church? That happened in France during World War 2 and it was the Germans you bastards". I don't have a problem with changing things up a bit, but that movie was obviously just pure American propaganda.

My favourite historical 'movie' is actually the HBO series Rome. They make things a little more dramatic, but other then that they stay very close to the actual history. Even the characters who aren't historically important, Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, are mentioned by Caesar in his writings.

Ip Man is one of my most recent favourites.

Not the most historically accurate film, but short of watching documentaries, you'd be hard-pressed to find a truly accurate historical drama.

I'll agree with the Last Samurai, it's pretty amazing. In fact, I was going to watch it tonight but I watched Eagle Eye instead. tsk tsk.

How 'bout CASABLANCA? Though maybe it's not historical because it was modern at it's time? Hm, tricky. Still awesome though.

Saving Private Ryan is a good one too. For more historical, I really liked Asoka, which is a Bollywood film about the man himself. It's pretty epic.

I don't really know what you're looking for. Do you want my favourite movie set in the past? Favourite movie based on true events? Favourite movie set during a historically significant event?

Here are my perfect-rated historical movies:
Casablanca
Enemy at the Gates
Full Metal Jacket
Goodfellas
Remember the Titans
Rudy
Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List

Of this list, Full Metal Jacket is probably my favourite.

300, I get that it took quite a few liberties, but the Battle of Thermopylae is still one of my favourite historical battles.

Inglourious Basterds. Or The Shawshank Redemption, if that counts (it's set in the 20's through the 40's, but it could be set on the freaking moon and the only difference in plot would be Andy's escape to Mexico at the end being a lot more impressive).

Schinler's List and Black Hawk Down are some of my highest rated films in general. I love them both, they're just so great.

Band of Brothers (the closest you can get to a completely accurate mini-series that is about WW2)

Band of Brothers is a Mini-Series so I guess the honor should go to a film already stated a lot in this thread. They call it:

Saving Private Ryan.
