I really loved Shadow of the Colossus. It was a purely awesome game. If they tossed in just a few human-sized enemies, some optional weapons and armor and maybe even a village or two it would be epic! I loved killing the giant beasts, and obviously that's what the game is all about. But tossing in some other things to make the colossi just a little bit more awe striking each time you fight one would only help to improve the game. The story eluded me somewhat tho^^
SoC isn't a JRPG.

I guess Pokemon. When I was in 8th grade, I had a 45 minute long bus ride to and from school so my and all my friends played Pokemon on the bus to pass the time. I was also a very big Reel Big Fish fan so I listened to Reel Big Fish and played Pokemon every day for half of the school year so now every time I hear Reel Big Fish it reminds me of Pokemon.

Does Skies of Arcadia count? That game was kinda fun. FF7 had me playing for 99:99:99 so that another one of my favs.

My favorite JRPG experience is never playing one. Ever.
Well aren't you witty and intelligent? /sarcasm

OT: I've really only played the Final Fantasy games, but I really liked the ones I've played. VII's my favourite, followed by XII (I never understand what people have against it).

Edit: Oh yeah, and Pokemon if that counts.

Um...Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game, and the one I got the most significant attachment to? I guess? I mean, it's also one of only two games where I found myself cursing at a character on-screen. Not cursing out of frustration. Cursing because I wanted to kill them painfully. Yeah...I'd gotten rather attached to a certain character by that point, and seeing her suffer needlessly was rather affecting. >_>

Also, Tales of the Abyss. -
Akzeriuth. Utter horror. I can't go into more detail...but if you ever wanted to see a man taken down so many pegs he goes into a coma, it's there.

And I'm still rather fond of the Baten Kaitos games' pretension towards having the player be involved directly as the main character's "guardian spirit." It made the plot twists in both games to be genuinely shocking.

Also, there's something strangely liberating about flying around in Neverland on Kingdom Hearts. It almost feels like the way I fly in my dreams.

Also, speaking as one of maybe three people on the Escapist who liked Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, I really enjoyed watching the way Emil and Marta developed.
I let my friend borros Tales of Vesperia and I got my 2 tales disc's resurfaced and ready to play. Then I found out there was somehow a dent in disc 1 that kept crashing the game, and I spent 30$ on a used copy from amazon. Thats how much I love TOS.
Dawn OT New World was....... a letdown. I was really expecting the full experience, but it was basically fanservice to the players from the 1st game. I beat it then traded it back and got No More Heroes, which I will never trade.
It reeked of low-budget. Its cheaper to strap some probes on actors for the cutscenes and just roll with it as opposed to getting a team to smooth it out.
too short game, Zero challenge for me except when I died 3 times on the Alice/alice fanboy fight right before the end. Only two people in a party, monsters suck, etc..
It was worth playing once but It's no keeper compared to the flagships.

A JRPG is an RPG made in Japan so, if Shadow of the Colossus is an RPG, yes it is a JRPG. You can feel stupid if you want, doesn't bother me.

I make a tradition of replaying Final Fantasy 8 every year in the week between Christmas and NYE, so I guess that?

Honestly, I've been off JRPGs for a while now, haven't really had the inclination to sit for many dozens of hours involved in something linear, but I've just started playing Lost Odyssey (a couple of days ago, despite owning it for over a year now). Only six hours in, which is probably equivalent to about four hours for most people 'cos I spend a LOT of time messing around, and I'm loving it.

But yes, as of tomorrow, it's time to dig out the PS2 and an old PS1 memory card and spend the week playing FF8 for the 11th time. Maybe I'll even finish it this time...
Funny you should mention the "play an old JRPG once a year" schtick, since I do that with FF6, by far the most amazing story-based game I've ever played. Oddly enough, it was FF8 that marked the beginning of the end for me and JRPGs. I hated that game.

FFX, the 'run' towards Zanarkand when you've finally linked up with the intro. Also the cutscenes leading up to the first Seymour battle and the battle itself. You know, I don't think I've ever seen a mainstream game in which a protagonist (Yuna) is so in love with a villain that he/she is willing to go along with their evil and has to be talked or fought out of it, but FFX suggested it at least. The great thing is that Dona foreshadows Yuna's need for independence way in advance.

Speaking of affectionate moments, Breath of Fire 3. Anyone who's played it will know there are several bosses you can get stuck on for a while. As a result I spent over a year believing that Teepo and Rei were truly dead. Also, beating Myria for the first time- everything just goes still for about ten seconds before the explosions start, as if daring you to believe you've finally beaten the hardest boss in Breath of Fire history.

Well, I suddenly found myself screaming that I'd shove my swords so far down his throat he'd be crapping steel in hell, so...yeah, I kinda was.

I preferred it when she stopped doing that (after Emil finally told her to shut the hell up).

Does the Paper Mario series count? It's turnbased, and from Japan, but it actually has a protagonist who has a clearly defined gender.

It shouldn't have BEEN a Mothership title. Destiny 2 got the full budget treatment, why wouldn't Symphonia 2? Then again Namco's executives DESPISE the Tales fanbase so I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that when the second most popular title gets a sequel they axe the budget.
...and I'm officially confused. Even aside from the fact that Destiny 2 was a mothership title, what was low-budget about Symphonia: DotNW again?

Escort Titles don't have NEARLY the budget that Mothership titles do. This tends to result in the escort titles being much shorter and lower quality.

Of course, even WITH more money they probably would have still kept that fucking mons system that has no business being in a Tales game, let alone at the expense of nerfing the actual CHARACTERS.
I don't dispute the "shorter", but I'm still not reading you on the lower quality. I'm probably still hung up over the updated art style, increased expressiveness of the character sprites, and vast expansion of the (suddenly much higher quality) voice acting.

As for the other...you're one of those people, huh? I'll admit, the mons system took me some time to get used to, but I did come to like it eventually. As for the other, I think I've actually responded to something like that before.

Depends on what you mean by "nerfing." Naturally, if they can't reach levels they could in the original, that's literally nerfing (making them less powerful). But if they can't do it, and there's absolutely no need to, it's not the nerfing the internet likes to rant about (ruining a character's usefulness). Seriously, Lloyd, Colette, Genis, and Raine are awesome whenever they show up, and the other four at least pull their weight compared to the enemies fought (just not against a hypothetical absurdly overleveled Emil or Marta).
