Well as Enter Shikari aren't 'lesser known' anymore, I guess I'll recommend FACT:

.... Am I a hipster.
Only if you hate on them the second they start selling more than 5 albums at a time and playing at more then just mom's basement and your local hipster-owned coffee shop on weekends.

Die Mannequin
They're one of my all time favourite bands
They're pretty badass.. and the lead singer is a bit of a looker so that doesn't hurt either

While Arcade Fire is well known in some countries, they are not so known where I live.

Nightwish

Sorry if any of these isn't obscure enough.
nightwish appears twice on your list, it is now too mainstream to listen to.

OT: Rasputina. badass cello music that sounds like distortion guitars, and songs about crazy old-timey stuff. very very fun.

So escapists, what bands do you like that aren't considered " mainstream" ?
I'm talking more Be your own pet and Karnivool , rather than Tool and Metallica.
Yeah Karnivool are awesome saw them live by mistake, check out these guys, they're on Serj Tankian's label (guessing you've heard of him being a probable metal fan an' all)

Also these guys are the kings of almost-unknown-cult-bands

Been listening to a lot of

Also this guy whose very famous in his field but obscure everywhere else, the most peaceful and zen music I have ever come across

And I could hardly leave this thread without mentioning the wonderful madness that is

Lots of people don't realize that Cyriak Harris actually writes his own music. And some of it is quite catchy.

Mostly, they watch the video and only want to talk about that.
This is what happens when you take acid in New Zealand.

OT: Since I'm a punk rocker, most of the bands I like are lesser known. Have a list with some short descriptions.

Have Nots(Ska punk at its finest)
Propagandhi(Good instrumentation for punk)
Authority Zero(think sublime but more punk, less hip hop)
Against Me!(older stuff was good)
Prayers For Atheists(mix punk and rap, weird huh?)
Sage Francis(Very poetic, free flowing rap with no chorus)
Street Dogs(Nice Boston street punk)
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies(Great for some interesting covers)

I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of metal. So let me mention a few of the ones I think deserve more attention: The Wounded, Sybreed, Scar the Surface, The Ocean, Kyng, Horse the Band, Burst (one of my all time favorites), Allegaeon and Across the Sun. There's a lot more I could put up because I really hate mainstream music. If it's on the FM radio, chances are I won't listen to it. Unless it's Tool.
