I know nothing about guns really, probably because I'm not an American, so this info could be wrong, but:

M1 Garand. Because it goes "ding" when the clip is empty. How awesome would it be to have a gun with a little bell on it that goes "ding". You'd fire off clip after clip at nothing just so you could hear the "ding" when the last round comes out so you could go "oh that's so cool"... I think more guns should go "ding", it would be a better world.

The trebuchet, for when you absolutely, positively need to drop a huge-ass rock on someone's head.

Boeing Airborne Laser, since I guess they scrapped the project.
Just shrink it down to fit on a support craft (EA-18 Growlers, the version of the Super Hornet with a jammer) so they can counter missiles fired at their squadron. Or hell, blow up the other planes by igniting their fuel tanks.

I'd have to go with the SKS.

The X8 rifle. Damned shame they cancelled that, it looks sexy, really future-ish. Would've loved to see that as the next standard rifle, but nooooo....

I want one, like, now.
Yeah those were fancy looking things and apparently much less prone to jamming than the m16 and m4, I believe they canceled because the handles melted when used in hot temperatures (like where they would be in use now).
My vote goes to the M1 garand as I have held one... Which probably sounds like a pathetic reason.

What is your favorite weapon used by any military that is no longer in service because it was impractical, illegal, expensive, or just obsolete?

I have to go with the Davy Crockett [i/]Atomic Annie[/i]

If you dont know what that is, it is a nuclear mortar, that could be attached to a jeep or other vehicle to be transported.

It's like the [i/]fat man[/i] from the fallout games, except a lot less hand-held, and it looked like a tube with an old-fashioned atomic bomb at the tip.
the first time i saw that i didnt think it was real. it honestly boggles my mind at the intelligence of human beings
The intelligence?? Fair enough for the developer, but you'd need to be god damn stupid to fire that thing!
-D'ho... I think there's a badguy in that house over there..
-No fu(kin' way im firing that sh1t!
-It's atleast a hundred yards over there, we'll be safe. FIRE!
*BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*

the MG 42 a gun that left a mark on the world and the basis of it are in use by the M60 and a later version MG3 is in use around the world. Alright maybe not as much as the Maxim but hey.
