You gotta get Thief 1 and 2 man! Those games are my favorite PC games to date. I still play them again and again from time to time. Sure, there's a ton of good old games, but if my computer only had enough memory to hold one or two games, they would be the first 2 thief games.

Already been said, but Starcraft, Warcraft III and Diablo 2. Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun is a cool old one as well.

Descent. 1 and 2, can't vouch for 3. Will run on anything that still functions (pretty much).
Get a gamepad or joystick, or a massive mousing area. Plus, there a re a lot of graphic enhancement mods floating around, to enhance your floating around.

Consider Patrician 3 if you're not against the idea of city-builders/trade sims. That game is excellent (Patrician 4 comes out next week on Steam---I don't know what it is with Kalypso Media and reviving moribund franchises, but Tropico 3 and Patrician 4? 2001 called, it wants us to know it's still alive.)

I don't care how good your computer is, you need to play Doom.
Get Doom Legacy if you can lurk enough to set it up properly, Black and White like others before me have said, Aliens vs. Predator 2 (just get it, i guarentee you won't regret it once you've tried out the multiplayer), Any Half-Life 1 derivative off Steam (counter-strike original, day of defeat, opposing force, ricochet if you're feeling adventurour), Sauerbraten (a definite must, it runs slow on my mid-range computer on max graphics, and apparently it's been tried on an Amiga 486), and I guess that's my list for now. I'm way too tired to do anything else right now.
