I'm not certain to be honest. Probably Princess Mononoke or for some really strange reason Only Yesterday, which is odd as it is pretty much a straight up light drama. I did really like Arrietty.

spirted away essentially sold me on anime there was just so much...colour it was just an absolute joy to experience

fireflies might be the besy war film ever made despite being, you know fireflies D=

saw mononoke when i was like 8 and had no idea what was going on, saw it 3 years ago and same sentiment!

also strangely i've seen only yesterday too, saw it on a random tv channel at about 3am it was more interesting than enjoyable

well as much as i hate siding with the crowed going to go with spirited away

It would be Princess Mononoke, followed by Porco Rosso.
Silly question, but would anybody count The Castle of Cagliostro? it's considered a Studio Ghibli film although it was made before Ghibli was founded.

Spirited Away.

It's the only animated film I have watched more than once since I was a child. I absolutely loved the characters and story, hehe.

But if we're just going with Studio Ghibli, then it's Grave Of The Fireflies, my favourite movie ever.
Good lord, how can anyone say that?!?! It's a brilliant movie, I'm not going to deny it, but it's just one of those films that I positive hate watching because it doesn't pull any punches and I can't watch it in one sitting any more, pretty much...

My favourite is The Cat Returns. Why does no one ever mention that one?
Because it is eighty minutes of pure whimsy, that's why... not saying that's a bad thing, s'just some want more substance. While I enjoyed The Cat Returns immensely, it wasn't entirely satisfying, for all its crisp animation, fun and great voice acting. Regardless, the lack of deeper intent/meaning s'why I prefer Whisper of the Heart. (And we seem to have different requirements for movie enjoyment by the looks of things, so never mind me...)

Rather than arguing over favorites (which this thread isn't doing; I'm referring to other conversations I've had) I'm just glad that all of these great movies exist.
Yay for Escapist solidarity! =_= And you 'n me both...

I completely agree with you OP, I adore Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I also love that Patrick Stewart is in the English dub XD

Honourable mentions go to Howl's Moving Castle because it's adorable and Princess Mononoke because it's just cool.

Laputa/Castle in the Sky. It's a rousing adventure with sky pirates, steampunk airships and robots. What's not to like?

Porco Rosso is a close second, followed by Kiki's Delivery Service.

To be honest, I find many of the studio's other films to be a little too bizarre to wrap my head around at times. Perhaps it's because I'm not very familiar with Japanese folk lore.

I mean seriously, who wouldn't want to hug THAT?
FINALLY! I am surprised it took so long for someone to mention Grave of the Fireflies, I didnt want to have to be the first person to mention it thus making others aware of it possibly leading them to watching it and crying and such.

OT: Grave of the Fireflies. Didnt see that coming didya?!

My choice has to be Spirited Away. That said, another movie that I like would be that Totoro movie.

Out of the three movies I've seen:

Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle in the Sky
The Secret World of Arriety

I have to say Castle in the Sky is my favorite. I guess I liked the characters, story, and setting the best out of all three of them.

They're all really good though.
