Dwarf Fortress - I'm not very good at it and barely understand what's going on but i've still had some lols

A Dwarf has caught fire: "Man this fire is really hot, I need some beer."

Will learn to play it properly one day ;)
Lol, one day Toady will fix the fact that Dwarves don't react to being on fire.

But yeah Dwarf Fortress is well worth the time and effort to get to learn.

Alternately try Goblin Camp. It's modelled after Dwarf Fortress with the exception that they made the UI very good. Give it a look.

Survivor: The Living Dead. A survival-horror/puzzle/action game where you need to fend off hordes of zombies for as long as possible. Hard as all [REDACTED] though until you get a grip on the mechanics.

You need to carefully manage ammo, weapons, traps, supplies and barricades in order to make it through 7, 12 or 14 minutes of zombie hell. Also, you have an infection bar that will slowly fill up if you are ever bitten by a zombie and can kill you when you are less than 8 seconds from safety.

Kingdom of Loathing [http://www2.kingdomofloathing.com/login.php?loginid=39d7d35cd424460bb278182d04c49637] A fun/ny little text-based RPG, with a surprising amount of strategy.

A.D.O.M:
[link]http://www.adom.de/[/link]

A very indepth (and unforgiving, you have been warned) Roguelike that has kept me hooked since I first discovered it a few years ago.
I'm looking for a new one, how long do games last (at first) and how does it compare to nethack (if you know)?
Do you mean how long does a full game take, start to finish? I honestly couldn't tell you - I've never finished it. You recall I said it was unforgiving? Although I hold my failure up as a measure of the quality and depth of A.D.O.M: the fact is that it keeps me coming back week after week, month after month, year after year despite the fact it keeps kicking my ass. And there are many similarities with NetHack, but in my (subjective) opinion A.D.O.M is the superior game.

I meant how long till I should expect to die at first, I was expecting it to take a hell of a long time to get used to and be able to survive for ages. But I've downloaded it and giving it a fiddle now to find out myself anyway.

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good freeware games. In return here are some of my favourites:

"the white chamber" - Short adventure game with interesting horror elements.
"Cave Story" - Nice run and gun platformer.
"Gun Girl 2" - Shoot lots of zombies in a metroidvania world with some nice sawblades and other weapons.
"Eversion" - Simple little platformer that gets more interesting as the game progresses. Avoid spoilers for this one.
"Iji" - An interesting platformer offering you choice of routes, upgrades and lethality. Good plot with lots of little logbooks to find.
"Genetos" - Shoot-em-up that takes you on a tour of the genre's history, becoming a beautiful bullet hell on higher difficulties.
"The Spirit Engine 2" - Decent little RPG with a good soundtrack.

"Synesthesia" - Program that turns any midi into a guitar-hero-esque sequence of scrolling bars that can be slowed and played (with scoring) on an electric keyboard. Great if you ever wanted to play a song but have trouble with sheet music.

I recommend all of these. Have you come across any good ones?
Could u link a site I can play said games?

The Eversion on Steam is an updated version with improved graphics. The original version is (was?) free and doesn't really lose anything for the non-enhanced backgrounds.

Also: Hydorah: A seriously difficult side-scrolling shoot-em-up. It's fun once you get past the artificial difficulty of giving you limited saves.

N+ is fun for pixel perfect platforming but hard as hell.

Distorted Travesty has some fun moments (a great boss fight with X springs to mind) but gets incredibly sadistic after a few levels so only hardened masochists should expect to get to the end.

Edit: Here's a link for the person above:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=gun+girl+2
That should help you find them all.

I stumbled onto this awesome little game. It's a point and click adventure with multiple endings. I managed to get one of the endings in about 5 minutes, it wasn't a good ending but it made me laugh so hard.

Anyway here is it. Chivalry is not dead.

The site also has hundreds of freeware games so go nuts.

My point was they aren't all in one place and I don't have the time to look up addresses for them all again, especially as they are all easily found anyway.

Sorry, couldn't resist. They don't come from a single website. I came across most of them on the Freeware Games page of TV Tropes. I tend to take the view if someone bothered to write a page for them there there must be something to the game.

I recommend Elona.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Elona
It's pretty much what you get when you mix a life RPG with a rouge like which is much more forgiving than most other roguelikes but still pretty easy to die but at least death is a small slap on the wrist.
You can download it from the tvtropes page I linked above.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is cave story and Iji but those were already recommended

Echo Bazaar, which was covered by Extra Credits a while back. I also like Time Fcuk, Don't Look Back and Spewer.

Whatever happened to the indie-gaming feature we used to have here on Fridays? We need to resurrect that.

It's not even "I need some beer", it's "I need some highly flammable beer". Dwarf Fortress FTW!

Spelunky [http://www.spelunkyworld.com/]. 2d platformer with randomly generated levels.
Thankyou for that one, awesome little game. I'd still be playing, but I got studying to do... So yeah, anyone who skimmed over this, check it out. Small download.
I feel I should contribute, so here's Super Crate Box [http://www.supercratebox.com/].
Simple concept, but a blast to play. I've sunk hours into that game.

If we are talking mods too:
Deus Ex-The Nameless Mod: A massive, fully voiced total conversion mod with classic Deus Ex gameplay, branching storylines and lots of side-quests. I can't recommend this enough.
Deus Ex-The Malkavian Mod: A hilarious mod where you wander round UNATCO having insane conversations with characters stitched together out of Deus Ex Convos. Manderley is a pidgeon who raps.
Portal: The Portal: The Flash Version (TFV) Map Pack, a nice long set of reasonably challenging but not excessive chambers.
Half Life 2: Dear Esther: A haunting wander round an island. Kind of unnerving in a psychological unease-type way. You haven't played a game like this before.

Speaking of Dear Esther; the people who made that also created Korsakovia.

If you thought Dear Esther was unnerving, that is pure existential terror.
