As with my favourite ending, my favourite start is also GTA4.

Really classy and sets the scene great.

I'll have to agree with the people saying Half-life 1, perfect atmosphere.

I personally liked the doom 3 intro to the game... well the playing intro, not the loading movie before the game started...
Doom 3 has that perfect dark cramped atmosphere where you just know that shit is waiting to happen, it's all a matter of time.
The small details such as the man you encounter in the beginning who's trying to tell you something but changes his mind, as well as the PDA messages about the missing people, alot of paranoid workers talking about getting back home to earth...
You really do get the feel of something you're not being told, shit is just waiting to happen.

Mortal Kombat games (at least lately) have had very impressive intro cinematics. Watching Deception, Shaolin Monks, Armageddon. Those intros were very intense. Makes me wish they created an MK movie made in all CGI.
I know I'm gonna regret this, but I actually found the live action MK movie entertaining... I think I'd rather watch it, with all it's inherent flaws, than an updated CGI flick. There, I said it.

But yeah, agreed. Those are some hardcore intros. Brutal.
Well, I'm able to find the best in everything flawed. So I must admit, I'm also a fan of the movies. But my point was that watching an intro to any of the newer MK games, when it ends, I say to myself, "I want more!" It's like, I'd almost rather watch a feature length movie with nothing but CGI fight sequences than play the game.

People have already said some of my faves such as FFVIII and SC2

but my true favorite is the opening of Killzone. One of the best speeches ever.

I liked Bully's intro quite a bit. I thought it did a fantastic job of setting the tempo for the rest of the game. After getting to the end of God Of War the intro's badassery factor went up a few notches. The first intro to ever really blow my away though was Metal Gear solid. Yes, Ace Combat 6 does have a very epic intro but I alaways expect AAA CG from Namco.....Now, if we could somehow work on them to stop nickel and diming DLC I'd be straight.

Probably not the best anymore, but this was one of the first intros I saw that just made my mouth drop and made me want to play the game so bad, and the way the game is made, you dont even realise you have started the game when it starts, good times good times.

the game is another world

in fact I played this game all the time just to watch the intro LOL.

And then there's this, the absolute greatest intro ever.

I'd say that the BEST intro i've ever seen was brought by Mafia: City of the Lost Heaven. Why? Because from the very begining this intro show that this city is alive. You can see some guys chating with each other, a family that's solving their problems, a bum sitting next to the bridge, a guy nearly hit by a car. These things shows that this city is realy alive. It feels like a real world, in which everyone of us is nothing.
And then you're suddenly thrown into the game. You're sitting in the bar and chating with a detective Norman. And that conversation is very gripping.

After so many years, this game is still "The BEST game i've ever played"

The parachute jump at the beggining of Metal Gear Solid 3. Especially the closeup of Snake's mask as the back of the plane opens and the light reflects on his goggles. So cool. Also, the first level of Call Of Duty 4. I was expecting to just get off in time and then see it explode or something, but then it get's bombed while you're still on it and you have to leg it as the ship is falling apart around you and water is gushing in. It was the first of many "I can't believe this is happening outside of a cutscene" moments in the game, and the reason I bought it.

That sound's kinda wrong. I was talking about getting of the ship.

When I first got Age of Mythology, the computer we had wasn't good enough to play the intro.... or any of the game now that I think about it. We sorta set the game aside until we picked up a new computer; when I first saw the intro, what with every element fitting together so perfectly (honorable mention to the music), I had an eyegasm.

Also, Age of Empires was awesome too, very original, very well put together.
