I have never been skilled enough to be a truly stealthy character, but in any game where I can I WILL try to use stealth at least once.

Whether I am backstabbing enemies in Halo, poisoning an arrow in Oblivion, or pushing an unaware guard off a rooftop in Assassin's Creed 2 (I really wanna try that), stealth is like an addicting drug to me.

There are so many games with stealth elements in them, and honestly most of them turn out to be frustrating and overall shit. Splinter Cell IMO is the only game that I've played that has done stealth well. The Metal gear solid is decent, but you'll inevitably run into situations where stealth is so fucking hard and/or time consuming that you might as well just run in guns blazing, because that's going to be the outcome when you get found anyways. Especially in 4, because at the point when you run into those little 3 armed ball robot things any opportunity at stealth has officially died.

The one that allows you to crouch slightly and you become completely invisible because they are too busy staring at a wall.
By that I mean fallout 3.

Assasin's Creed 1 & 2 did stealth if you count running away half the time.

a game where stealth is an option, and a good, intuitive one at that, but can also be done by taking off all your clothes and running along screaming at the top of your lungs.

I prefer a more refined version of what was implemented in assasin's creed. I want the freedom to approach an objective any way I want. If I want to just bust in, guns blazing, that should work, and if I decide to stealth in, that should work too. If I bollux the stealth bit, I should be able to transition to combat easily, too. That's part of why I liked that series, even through the various flaws. (The primary reason is that counter-killing with the hidden blade never gets old.)

Why must all developers copy the games I consider boring and ignore the ones I genuinely want them to copy? It's not fair.
I think it might be that nowadays, the Thief series won't appeal to the new audiences. As it's an old series, developers may be hasty to try to ressurect it, as making a Guitar Hero/Halo/Fitness clone is a safer option, which can bring in better profit in regards to what people want nowadays.
Well, there is some hope to that. I have a 13 year old brother that I'm always trying to get to play awesome games from the past, and he usually scoffs at anything SNES era solely because of the graphics. I showed him Thief and he got hooked, saying that the graphics weren't that bad (The guard's heads have the polygonal articulation of a bucket), and he requested that I install the game on the old PC I gave him. I think devs just underestimate their audiences. The issue you cited is plaguing the whole industry, but I don't think that it is affecting the stealth genera any more than everything else. My brother is a retard because he'd be right at home screaming on LIVE. If he likes Thief, then some one is really misunderstanding the gaming audience.

I believe that the main root of it all is that people entering the gaming world only want to play what's new, and whatever's the craze with their friends. This just supports the whole "Because it was made in the 90's it must be bad" argument. With a bit of a push for exposure of the older titles, people can begin to realize the gems that have been long forgotten due to the flashier titles coming out.

Being an extremely nerdy person, it depends for me on who I'm playing as, because I tend to roleplay even when I'm not playing an RPG. If I'm playing Garrett, and I know that he's a sneaky dude, then I'm going to do my best to be sneaky and I'll enjoy inhabiting that role. If I'm playing the big, Nordic, mohawked dude from Mercenaries 2, I'm going to destroy everything I can, as loudly and explosively as possible, and I have fun doing it.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'd say #2 is my favorite, but whether or not I'd actually use the stealth depends on my character concept.

Number 1 definatly. You have to think on your feet, and remain silent and hidden. Thats how I like it. Thief was definatly my favourite Stealth game ever. I doubt anything will ever be able to beat it. And if anybody finds one, let me know please ;) I'm just itching for a Thief 4 :p

I like the Metal Gear Solid style stealth, you're meant to be sneaking around the place but often end up shooting your way through. MGS 4 was good for that, you're crawling through a warzone, getting past x amount of soldiers, it's so tempting to just sit in a corner camoflauged (can't spell) against the wall and shoot guys in the face from a distance. Fun times.

Something tells me you'd like the Hitman series. You have complete freedom; you can make every essential death look like an accident and never kill anyone else, or you can run in guns blazing. Also has some element of crowd stealth due to the disguise system.

I just like stealth in general. When it's done like in Splinter Cell, it's amazing. Like in Fallout 3, then it's a nice little addition. And, I always like to sniper some a-holes in GTA IV or in Saint's Row instead of making an effort.
