Your Favourite Video game Story?

I'm probably going to get flamed for this since hating Halo seems to be the new cool thing to do, but when you go full boat, read all the books and comics, play ALL the games all the way through and generally get to to know every aspect of it, the Halo universe is utterly unrivaled when it comes to story.

Halo seems to cliche-ish and your arguing Cliche's over H-L.

Who cares if it's cliched? It has an epic story.
Although I will admit that the story can be quite hard to understand at first.

Specifically, SS2, but the whole universe Origin created was brilliant - did you know the Crusader games are in continuity with the Shock games?

final fantasy VII (gameplay was average, but the story was epic. loved it)
final fantasy IX (don't know why, but it justs leaves an impression on me)
final fantasy X (didn't do anything wrong. one of my favs of all time)
Kingdom Hearts (the first one was awesome. the ending was so sad)
(yes, I'm an rpg nerd. ive played my fair share of games, but these are the big ones to me)

on a side note, the winner of best storyline ever has got to go to the original crash bandicoot on PS. pretty much, this guy created you, but you ran off, so he has stolen a female of your mutated race and we're assuming its your girlfriend or something. now go save her, young scalliwag!

I've been looking around the forums and I never really see much stuff looking at storyline in games (or maybe im not looking that hard, who knows)
But im here to ask peoples opinions on what their favourite story in a videogame is, because im a really nosy bastard.

I may as well start this off, My favourite story in a game has to be the MGS series. I know its a little generic but what the hell, the story is great.
I even shed a tear at the ending of MGS4.
BTW the gameplay f**king awesome too, the fight against liquid ocelot is one of my favourite moments in a game.

Planescape:Torment and Star Control 2.

Both have an excellent story, albeit with Star Control two it is more the hilarious conversations with different alien species. For example, the Thraddash have bombed themselves from space-faring civilization into stone age over 10 separate times. And a race of gas-balls living in a gas giant can't leave their planet, but are incredibly curious. So they buy off a probe from a travelling merchant happening upon it but since their logic is a bit so-so, they accidentally turn the probe into a Von Neumann replicator that first gathers data from passing ships and then tries to destroy them for raw-materials...

I liked the story in Final Fantasy V because it has a realy well told story full of shocking moments

Chalk another one for Final Fantasy X, with honorable mention to Final Fantasy Tactics.

Breath of Fire 3 for a great many moments free of forced melodrama but unexpectedly jarring, such as the Nue Chimera, the Mutant's death, and the destruction of your home and friends (not in standard JRPG fashion though; you've actually had 2 dungeons to get used to the place and get to know Rei and Teepo before they appear to die). And afterwards, a certain character nearly going mad.

Also recently finished Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and as insane as it sounds I think I prefer The Two Thrones' story (as well as its version of Farah), though that might be simply due to the fact that I'd played it first.
