I like Marle from Chrono Trigger. She does have daddy issues but for the most part she is confident and independent when she needs to be.

Morrigan from DA:O is fun. If only her "clothes" weren't so ridiculous.

Also, Lynne from Ghost Trick:
"Haha, I died again!"

I don't think I've played a great deal of games with any particularly fleshed out and awesome female characters, theres probably been a few noteworthy ones, but since i can't remember them right now, I'll go with pre other M Samus Aran.

to clarify, i know there is other characters i liked much more, but i can't recall their names or the games they came from.

Cortana was a good one. If you read the books she was based off a human mind like all "Smart" AI. She is strong, well intentioned, and best of all off sets master chiefs silent protagonist in game.

Probably Veronica from Fallout: New Vegas.

I liked her happy and chirpy personality and the way she would sarcastically comment on major events and people. Yet, despite this she still showed a much more serious side during her personal quest and when talking about Elijah after Dead Money.
Seconded.

She was just so much fun to talk to. I remember the first time I went through all of her conversation topics, and I was smiling the whole time because she was funny. It's always hilarious to give her Formal Wear.

Cate Archer from No One Lives Forever.
Really pleased you spelled her name correctly, so many people think she is Kate.
Anyway I won't choose just one from my three favorite video game characters.
Cate Archer from NOLF

April Ryan from The Longest Journey

and

Jade from Beyond Good and Evil

All three are well crafted complex characters.

Oh and Shodan, always Shodan.

Final Fantasy X-2's Yuna is the only video game character I've ever considered to be a personal role model. She's sweet, she's bubbly, she's entertaining, she's charming, she's capable, she's upward, and she's ceaselessly kind. She also has the cutest little cheeks. I just want to pinch those cheeks.

Well that's easy, Tali'Zo-

Uh... 'Zorah Nar Rayya... Vas... hold on, let me change the image

Ah that's better. Tali'Zorah Nar Rayya Vas Normandy.

Yes, the hips are a major factor.

I am ashamed to admit that I had to think about this for at least twenty seconds.

Also, I have never Google'd for Samus Aran before. I should make certain to never do so again unless SafeSearch is on its highest setting.
You're right, look at how bad this is!
OT: probably Pyro or Alyx Vance.
I'm a valve fanboy

(not sure how to post pictures)

From Metal Gear Solid 3, of course.

Incidentally, I wonder if A.D.A from Zone of the Enders would count....

damn. ninjas
but yes i concur but ...

Samus was always great because her story was told through game play, and in games like Zero Mission and Fusion we got a better look at 'her' as a person, but at the same time, she lacked the development arc Tera had, we got to see her go form an insecure girl that's not really sure about anything and just seemed to be going with the flow of what was happening around her,
the returners might have been the good guys, but it still doesn't make them taking advantage of Tera's vulnerability ok. she was really little better then a child in terms of her understanding of the world around her at that time
to a more confident young woman, determined but unsure of her place given her breeding, and while her personal search for answers did basically lead to her losing her nerve when she found those answers, she did get her nerve back, not only that, a more personal reason to finish the fight started
could be said she already HAD reasons, the empire killing her mother and father and enslaving her, but there was no real attachment there, not like between her and the orphans or Leo, and the empire had been totally wipe out, so it could be argued 'she got her revenge'

Since Cate Archer and Alyx Vance has already been named, I put forward Heather from Silent Hill 3. She looks and acts properly like a random teenager, that's been put in a ghost town.
