Okay, stop listing the pistols in Counter-Strike now.Ishnuvalok said:An FN Five Seven? For home defense? You could do a lot better, and cheaper. From what I've heard the ammo is hard to come by (and expensive) in the 'states. I'd would rather go with something like a Sig P220 in .45 ACP, or a Smith & Wesson model 686. Large caliber guns is (in my opinion) the way to go for self-defense firearms.
In a self defense situation you won't really be aiming down the sights, you'd be point-shooting. You'd want a round that will put an attacker on his ass, no matter where they get hit.
really? i keep looking but looks like lots of hoops you gotta jump through. btw know any shooting clubs?Loftworthy said:This is my first gun

Thankfully shotguns are still easy to get hold of in Blighty. Despite looks it was brand new when I bought it last year.
Im glad I live in America where I can own as many guns as I can affordBrynThomas said:Despite being an Australian, I'm pretty optimistic about obtaining a (legal) handgun sometime in my life.
I intend to join a pistol club for the necessary period and do all of the mandatory shoots in a year. Thinking a Colt 1911, simply because I'll be restricted to one caliber as you have to do a different shoot for certain caliber ranges, I can handle about ten a year, not twenty or more though, .45ACP seems good enough. Also we have restrictions on magazine capacities (under 10), so I think I'd feel like a 9mm glock with 10rounds had been neutered or something.
There is a lot of misinformation on what constitutes an AP round. Many types of rounds are AP, but not all involve a charge or glasing powders. Flexible ballistic armor stops bullets by catching them like a net. What can bypass that obstacle is something that has a high enough velocity, density, and or a unique shape. Your basic FMJ rifle round can penetrate armor due to it's high velocity, and tipped shape that can carve through obstructions. The next simple step would be to make it out of a denser material than lead such as tungsten or depleted uranium. But when you factor that in, it may hurt the target but it might not stop him as well, because over-penetration could occur and all the kenetic energy can just pass right through.tsb247 said:I have a Five-Seven, and it is an EXCELLENT pistol, but it is NOT the greatest thing for self defense as it doesn't really hit all that hard. The only real reason that this particular weapon exists is to put lots of very small holes in well-armored things.soapyshooter said:What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.
Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.
EDIT: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS ISNT A THREAD ABOUT GUN RIGHTS! IF YOU DONT WANT ONE THEN FINE! STOP JUDGING THOSE WHO WILL BUY ONE OR ALREADY OWN ONE. Take your opinions to the right place, they will be appreciated and this is not the right thread to start a gun ownership debate.
It is GREAT for target shooting, and it is a GREAT conversation piece as not very many people can afford to own/fire them. The only real plus on the combat side is that it can hold 20+1 rounds and it can penetrate medium level body armor (with the proper round that is NOT available on the civilian market).
If you feel so inclined to pick one up, I would suggest seeking out some of the hollow points that FN makes for it. They are somewhat tuogh to find, but they would be better suited for the self-defense role, but they will still overpenetrate quite a bit (I have tested this with water jugs and compared it to other rounds like the .45ACP). Although, the 5.7x28mm round has a habit of tumbling when it enters a target, so you may be ok. I have never shot at a living thing with it, so I have little practical experience with how the round behaves in soft tissue.
I also feel as though I should point out that holsters are VERY tough to find!
Oh... And my first gun was a Ruger 10/22. I still love that thing, but I don't shoot it as often as I should.I need to take it to the range one of these days so it knows I still love it.

I agree, and I am younger generation. It just seems so... snootymokes310 said:Yeah, the FN Herstal, cuz everyone needs an armor piercing pistol.Any evidence for that claim? I'm sorry, but I get very worried when I hear the younger generations speak so cavalierly about such dangerous weapons.soapyshooter said:...Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan...
