Live in the UK so never had (or fired, for that matter) a gun. If I ever manage to emigrate to the US tho I'm probably gonna get a 1911 that shoots .45 rounds first off. Then you know, follow that up with something that shoots .22 and ofcourse a Desert Eagle .50AE (Just as a 'screw you' to all my friends in the UK who can never ever own a handgun :p ).

By the way OP, if you're buying a gun for self defence I'd really recommend getting something that uses a common ammo type. I get that you thought it was cool going Akimbo with the Five seveN in Counterstrike and stuff but it's a pretty terrible choice if you want it for 'when society collapses'. They use a proprietary ammo which is expensive to buy and pretty crap, since the only bonus (the AP side) is taken out from civilian ammo iirc. Get something that can shoot bullets which you could make yourself.

Not that it makes a difference like, y'all will have your guns confiscated before anything big like that happens, or you'll be a shadow burnt on to the pavement first...

Protection? Bull-fucking-shit. Masturbation.
I respect someone who buys a small/medium caliber pistol and makes the claim that it's for protection. That's legit. But man, some people walk around trying to convince you that that Desert Eagle is really just in came some mean ol' criminal comes by. People don't generally buy a .22 to stroke their ego.

My first, and so far only, gun was a 6.5mm bolt action rifle. It was that or a 30.06 break action, so I took the bolt.

I think a desert-eagle would keep unwanted intruders out just fine :)

My first rifle was an M-14 my grandfather gave used in Vietnam.

In accordance to gun control laws, he had it reworked to disable the fully-automatic feature.

His reason why, aside from California law at the time, was such: "Anyone who has a full-auto or triple-burst weapon is wasting perfectly good ammunition."

guns aren't legal where I live.
The only rifle I've ever fired was a chinese 5.5 millimeter bolt action rifle.
when I get older I'm probably migrating to Turkey, where you can buy weapons easily.
in turkey, you may buy any semi-automatic handgun, rifle or shotgun. no licence for automatic rifles is given to civis.
permit to carry them in public option is also avaliable to civilians, but only if you can declare that you have something to protect.

just an informal answer.
thanks for the info. I had it happen before that I came in a store to buy a simple flashlight,
and the guy tried to sell me a shotgun. fail.

Well this Monday the Firearms Officer (UK policeman who make sure firearms law is upheld) is coming to my house to inspect my security. Once he's happy with it, I get my shotgun license.

Then I'll be able to get my first gun, which will be something along the lines of this sexy monster:

Or at least, that's what I'm hoping for :p

The first gun I actually fired as an over/under shotgun in 20 Bore. I've moved on to 12 Bore now I'm a big boy :p

I'm looking at a Ruger 556, expensive as hell but loaded with stuff. That, or some AR15 variant, from Colt or Bushmaster most likely.

My first gun was a Belgian made Browning Auto 5 given to me by my grandfather.
I used it to hunt and shoot clays.
Its a twelve gauge and the best thing i could have asked for.

Supporting this position. You people and your guns! You know that once you buy a gun, it is by far the most likely weapon to kill you if you are to be murdered, right?
Yep, always keep it dissembled, unloaded and the ammunition in a different place locked away tight!

Otherwise, you are putting everyone you know in danger.
Disassembled? Really?
Isn't keeping it in a case well enough away?

What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

On my 21st birthday i am gonna pick up this lil beauty:

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.

Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.

EDIT: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS ISNT A THREAD ABOUT GUN RIGHTS! IF YOU DONT WANT ONE THEN FINE! STOP JUDGING THOSE WHO WILL BUY ONE OR ALREADY OWN ONE. Take your opinions to the right place, they will be appreciated and this is not the right thread to start a gun ownership debate.
I don't care about people owning guns but I find the comment about how society is progressing to be very narrow minded.

Modern North American society is better then ever. More people have more rights then ever before. Technology has made life easier then ever before. People are healthier and live longer then ever before. Also, people are now safer then ever before.

All in all, the modern society kicks ass.
If you want to get serious then no we are less free than when the British ruled us, I could possibly get fired from a corporate job for saying a female/male coworker is hot, not in a offensive way, just "Yea she is pretty hot" a person can get fired for that, how is that for free speech.
That speech seems to be very free enough. As does the company's right to fire you. You have the right in this country (USA) to say whatever may come to your mind. You do not, however, have the right to dictate peoples reactions to your statements.

...Wait a minute... Aren't we talking about guns here?

Exactly, so where did you go with your previous post?

Protection my balls.
I would love to see a source for that very slanted statistic.

Millions of gun owners kill no one every day.
