Hm, unsure... but the first i clearly remember was Mystic Quest on Game Boy. Thats Final Fantasy Adventure for the americans or Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden in the original.
Awesome game and the easiest boss-fight ever. (You retrieve the damsel in distress just before the main villain. She can fill your health up whenever you ask, the boss attacks in small waves giving you easily the time to ask...)
Great... now i am in nostalgia mode again. Where is my emulator?
Ah well
First one ever was actually a lesser known game called (I believe) Spells of the Ancients. It was a Wizardry ripoff.
First one I beat was Pokemon Blue
First one I fell in love with and made me re-evaluate the genre was Fallout.
Honorable mention for almost turning me off the genre entirely was any game I played by Bethesda Softworks. Why? The Bethesda Shuffle. The dance you have to do, constantly running, strafing, and jumping backwards away from an enemy while slashing at them to get them to die without hitting you as much. It was merely an inconvenience when I had to do it in Morrowind and Oblivion, but I shouldn't have to strafe backwards while firing at an enemy in Fallout 3.
Phantasy Star IV for Sega Genesis (On Sega Channel) I had to deal with flack from some friends who were SNES fanboys but asses to them when I got Sega Channel and found Phantasy Star IV which has COMIC BOOK CUTSCENES to tell the story and not just sprites jumping around.
FFVII for me I remember how awesome I thought it would be from the box picture (dude I was like 10), Then it bored me with its turn based combat, but I was forced to play it because I only had that and the sample disc... Then before I knew it I couldn't wait to get back home from school to play it.
Golden Sun!
God that game was, and still is, my favorite. I first borrowed it from a friend eight years ago than actually got the game a year ago. Still the same, still awesome.
I'[ve never played any Grandia but the second one on Dreamcast which was awesome. I think my first RPG was Zelda on NES. That is considered an RPG right?
My first RPG, and hell my first real game ever, was Pokemon Yellow. I fucking loved that game. But i think my first REAL rpg..hm...I think it was KOTOR IMO one of the best RPGs of all time
That's actually a picture of Angband, a Dungeons of Moria variant. The original I played on my 386 didn't have color. Not text or numbers or anything. It's also a picture of the town, not the dungeon.
Anyway, yeah, I was playing rogue-like RPGs as my first RPGs. A couple others soon after that included Dungeons of the Unforgiven and Daggerfall.
