Wide open levels with specific objectives that don't give you a map. Looking at you, Half-life 2: Episode 2.
Scenes where you watch something terrible with no way to stop it, despite having the ability to. Again, Episode 2 was very bad in this regard.
Instant death melee weapons. Too many times, I've fired at a charging idiot in Battlefield: Bad company, only for his to duck and swipe at my with a knife. 4 5.56 rounds doesn't kill you, but a little knife to the kneecap is an instakill?
Being forced into a shit class. I don't enjoy being Engineer or Sniper in Team Fortress 2, or sniping in any game really. But when I'm the only person who's any good with it, and we need it, what can I do if I want to succeed?

Snipers.
I don't like sitting miles away from the action clicking on people's heads, and if it's a good game, people shouldn't be able to do it to me either.
so every game should be inside of an office building or close quarters area?

Anyway, I just hate all the kids throwing all the racial slurs around.

People who call mags clips should be slapped. I hope I get drafted for one reason, some doofus shooting his M4a1 says he's out of clips in the middle of a firefight and I can pull my special clip I always carry on person and throw him oe of these:

People who get mad while playing video games. And I mean...legitimately -angry-. I'm mean, wtf man, it's just a game. Seriously, some people rage so hard while gaming...

When games get confused in the dark and change genres, when survival horror games start off as such and then become action games that aren't challenging, or even fun, just frustrating (Bioshock...)

When any game loses it's identity or sets itself as a certain game genre and changes or tries to do too much it loses it's playability...

Watching other people through parts that are particularly difficult for them to complete. I guess it's not necessarily a peeve, so much as difficult and painful to watch, and somewhat aggravating. Like watching a girlfriend play video games (gamer girls notwithstanding).

-Bad VA's in Japanese games.
-People calling using terminology like clips and mags interchangeably.
-"Play to Win" people, but not so much that as the, "Well I just lost so that means this isn't fun"
-People who try to argue that JRPGs are linear but WRPGs are not.

I fucking hate time limits, escort missions, escort missions with time limits... and the tyranny of realism. I play games to take a time-out from reality, goddammit, why the hell would I want this Modern Warfare shit and all its bastard cousins?! Have a look at Painkiller, developers, maybe you'll remember what fun in gameplay is all about.

People who take gaming too seriously. I used to play with a guy who would send critiques of our gaming style to us post game. SERIOUS CRITIQUES. I felt more as though I was receiving a performance review from work. Not to mention he'd also send copies of the maps we were expected to memorize before the next round of game play and 'strategies' we were to employ. Also, he'd try to dictate what weapons/characters we could/couldn't use during game play based on his preferences.

People who insist on chatting about bizarre nonsense during the game. I've never been a fan of people talking to me while I play, if I'm honest, and there is nothing more annoying then having someone buzzing about f@ck all in my ear while I'm trying to snipe someone or something. If I'm playing co-op or on a team, and the conversation is game-related, fine. I have no interest in listening to someone natter on about their personal life, pretty much at all, but especially during game play. There's nothing worse then when someone finds out your a psychologist, you're in the middle of killing something and they want to talk about their mommy issues. UGH.

That every single story worth telling in a sandbox game is based in one of three or fur American cities. And 90% of those are set in New York.

Though I must mention the Mercenaries Games and the Saboteur for at least trying something different.

If you're going to snipe don't sit in front of an ankle high wall and fire non stop till you tun out of ammo. Sit back away from the action and only take a god damn shot if you know you can get a kill. I'm tired of sitting there panning the map listening intently for foot steps then suddenly *blam**blam**blam**blam**blam**blam* it's a fucking sniper rifle not a machine gun.

- When people refer to Portal or the Metroid Prime trilogy as being FPS's. Just because they are in first person and feature shooting does not make them FPS's.
I agree with portal not being an FPS, its just a first person puzzle solver.(so maybe an FPPS or FPP?) The Prime trilogy I'm gonna have to question you to a point on that. The game 90% of the time takes place from the first person perspective and your main mode of combat is well...a mega-man style arm gun. It does however take the aspects of your typical adventure/platformer games by giving you puzzles and whatnot to solve. In this respect I consider it a very happy marriage between the genres. (I need to dig up my copy of prime tomorrow and play it again, that was just an amazingly done game)

I'm actually rather curious now, what genre do you classify the prime trilogy as?

little kids on M rated multiplayers
rocket whores
vehicle whores (honestly, if i wanted a game where everyone was using vehicels, id play twisted metal)
metal gear solid's cutscene to play time ratio, never again
akimbo shotguns in MW2
horrible voice acting
rediculously long boss grapples that do huge amounts of damage and theres nothing i can do about it once they get me (ninja gaiden 2)
enemies that can suddenly block after a i do a fifty hit combo
annoyingly stupid AI allies
rts AI enemies that can build a base instantly while i'm still harvesting resources

ugh, the list goes on

Being forced to watch not so good cinematics over and over again, even after playing the damn game. I just tried to replay Assasins Creed last night, and ended up throwing the controller down and storming off because I can't find any way to skip the cinematics. I spend 5 minutes out of 40 actually playing :(. It really pissed me off.

Also... PS....

People who don't reload, then blame the game when they don't have enough shots. Well, no skin off my back when opponents do it. NO MERCY!

One that really annoys me in games is the crappy AI, and the way that bodies will disappear after a while. That annoys me and I don't know why.

people that dive straight into the multiplayer without even the slightest idea of how the game works.

this happened last night on Splinter Cell: Conviction. my co-op partner kept running into well lit, over crowded rooms and opening up with an unsuppressed pistol. meaning I had to keep saving his ass. clearing a room of fully alert guards in 60 seconds and still getting to your partner is NOT EASY
