Beating World of Warcraft. No savings, no deaths.
Good luck to you on that.

My gaming white whale is Morrowind, I can't finish it but everytime I loose my sanity and install it, I try so desperetly hard.
Ya don't say, it's pretty easy just abuse the broken mercantile system to get 100 alchemy then spend a few games years selling potions to build up enough gold to buy the universe

Now that you have a kajillion gold from alchemy it's time to reach level infinity, if you have Long Blade as a Major/Minor skill then you won't have to spend as much of your fortune on this.

You'll need an enchanted item with a constant effect that boosts the governing attribute of one of your Major/Minor skills over 100
If you want to be even more cost effective track down the master mercantile trainer and get that up to 100

Long Blade is the cheapest way to do this but any skill will do, go to the master trainer and get training for the skill even if it's at 100 as long as your stat is above 100 the training will still happen "Your X has increased to 100" and will count towards leveling

What? Oh right there's a thread here with a topic.

I've already beaten the white whale population to extinction (for now) so I got nothin

Fallout 3's pointless map, definitely. I can never find a way around Rivet City, they say I'm supposed to be there, but where exactly? THERE'S NO MAP!

modern warfare 2, hear me out, it is in no right a bad game, However this does not make it a great game. all my gamer friends, (which is a high percentage) constantly talk about how many prestiges or whatnot. they also bug me for not playing it. a game that i thought wasn't bad and could possibly pass for good has changed into a game i can't stand due to everyone saying how amazing it is, when its just ok. it has become the avatar of gaming.

If you don't get that reference, then go kick your English teacher's dog.

Anyway, has a difficult task in gaming (either in the game itself or self-imposed) ever driven you to such madness that your friends start thinking you're Captain Ahab? I mention this because after four failures, a couple of which were on twenty-plus-hour saves, I'm making one final, "if I don't do it this time, I ain't gonna" hardcore run at Fallout 3, trying to add it to the list of games I've beaten without losing a life (or, in this case, even so much as reloading a save---I save solely to prevent lost progress due to crashes and bugs).

I've got some pretty vicious games on that list---Contra, Mega Man 2 and 3, Super Mario Bros., Morrowind, Oblivion (well, OK, Oblivion's so easy it's like a Fisher-Price toy, but still.) I want the head of that mutated, irradiated whale, gods damn it all!

How 'bout you guys? Gaming obsessions, anyone?
Why... would you do this shit to yourself??? Honestly, I'm serious, why? Are you some sort of narcissus??

There's an intercom on top of the tower near it, activate it and the bridge will come across.
If that's what you're saying.

Final Fantasy: 4 WhMages

You spend pretty much all of the game running away, and/or reloading and hoping for a better roll of the RNG for encounters. Eventually, they can be pretty powerful through items and high-level spells, but getting there is an exercize in pure self-torture. And yet, I couldn't stop playing for almost a month.

Defeating Mephisto on Nightmare difficulty in Diablo 2. I just couldn't do it. After many months I quit but I started again recently and did it no problem. Very frustrating.

The very first level in Devil May Cry 3 on Heaven or Hell difficulty. I used a cheat code after i beat the game and my file got corrupted and i lost all of my data. I thought it would be fun to try out some of the harder difficulties...it wasn't. On the plus side it made me into a tougher gamer.

Beating all the levels on Trials 2, that's right, just beating it, period. The hard levels in that game are insanely hard. I still to this day have not finished this game. I was obsessed with it for a long while, but I could never beat those last few "hard" levels. According to the leaderboards, plenty of others have, maybe I'm missing something.

I assume you mean "narcissist", and no---I'm just an experienced, skilled gamer who likes to create difficult tests for otherwise way-too-easy games.

The problem is that there always seems to be something just strong enough to kill me (wandering into a pack of Deathclaws, getting caught in the open by a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle-wielding Super Mutant Overlord, or something similarly absurd (or, in the "stupid ways to die" department, trying to shoot the grenade trap down the shaft in Bethesda Offices West and blowing myself up when I stood too close and the six Frag Grenades went off. Or falling off the Raider-infested overpass just north of Vault 101. Or any of the number of other retarded ways I've gotten pulped out there.)

My white whale? I have two that have been hounding me. Just HOUNDING me.

- Mirrors Edge Plat Trophy*; All I have to do to get this is complete the time trials. But the problem is, the time trials are F'n HARD!! I'm on stage 3 (Jackknife), and I've used every trick in my youtube arsonal to shave time, but I still come in 1 minute below the nessessary time. Until I finish that level, I cannot or will not proceed.

- Emerald and Ruby Weapons (FF7); These creatures of unbeatable WTFitude have trumped me for years. I got FF7 when it first game out on the PS1 (black back disk, nearly mint), and I've never beaten these bad boys. I go back from time to time. Gain some levels, rework my stratagy and materia. Never do I prevail. By the time I win, I'll be an old Ahab with a wasted life, I am sure. :)

*[sub]Mostly just the time trials. I told myself when I first got the game that it would be my first plat trohpy because I LOVED Mirrors Edge so much. Little did I know....[/sub]

[Edit]
I am disappointed that so many people have replied "what is this 'White whale' business?"
>_<

I... finished F-Zero GX on GC 100%. Without snaking. Also beat the dev's ghosts on all my favorite courses without snaking... Except on the donut, but that was more because it was used for snaking practice than to beat the record. That is my single greatest gaming accomplishment. Other than that, I generally get bored too fast to get that obsessed with a game.

For me, it was No Fighting in the War Room from Modern Warfare. I bought that game 2 months after release date and only finished that level on Veteran last month (it was the last level I needed on Veteran) As I finally made it through those corridors, memorised every enemy location, the best weapon to use, and finally, finally utttered the words, (as I keyed in the abort code) :

"He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it."

the one challenge from Smash Bros Melee where you fight Mewtwo, Ganondorf, and Giga Bowser all at once.
I beat that. You know what did it? Luck, and Jigglypuff. One of my saddest moments in gaming.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is one. Gotta get them all. Gotta get the golds, gotta get the silvers, can't go on, CAN'T GO ON, GOTTA GET THEM AAAAAAAAGH... and then it isn't the true ending because I didn't do it on hard. WELL THANKS GUYS.

But the one I have nightmates about, the one that haunts me to this day, is Sonic Adventure 2. Having multiple people tell me how easy getting all the emblems is does not make it any better that I can't. I just can't, OK?!

I like the Chao mini-games more than any level of the actual game (excluding bosses), but the last of the eggs and special items are some of the many rewards for completing that task. I can already feel the harpoon rope wrapping around my ankle.

Sooooooooooo what does gold have to do with finishing all the quests in Morrowind? Please elaborate Sherlok.
