Probably trying to beat 2 levels of an Metal Slug game without dying, I can do 1 well enough but only 1 time out of the millions of times I've played through them all (the Metal Slug series is my gaming crack) have I ever beaten 2 levels without dying

Sorry but...

I don't understand anything that you're saying in the OP. Like, at all. What's the question?
A gaming task that becomes more of an all-consuming obsession the more you fail at it. My example is trying to complete Fallout 3 without dying even once (and as most people are aware, there are far too many places in that game where even a strong character can slip and get blown up by something.)
I love how your response to his not getting your Melville reference was this, and not, 'you're an idiot' you're a stronger man than I am good sir.

Sonic 3. The only original Sonic I've never completed. It was once LBA but a couple of years ago I finaly got my copy working with XP and just about got past the Temple of Bu.

other than that... I don't actually have one.

Just getting through Final Fantasy 13. I'm 6 hours in, but goddamn it's a painful grind.

I'm a major Ace Combat fanatic, and it's generally a rule that I do have to do, buy, and beat EVERYTHING in a given entry of the series.

When I got Ace Combat Zero, naturally it occurred to me that I would eventually have to fill the entire Assault Record, a list of 169 special, named enemies spread out over every difficulty and campaign branch.

I had no idea of the kind of time investment this would take.

The game has a structure that in normal play is fairly interesting, but when trying to complete the Assault Record or earn all the medals, the 'three branch' style of play becomes nightmarish, and I ended up needing to play through the game more times than I would otherwise care to even think about. Let's see... three branches, over normal, hard, expert, and ace difficulties, sooo...

I ended up playing through the campaign at least twelve times. More, actually, since I had already played through a few times before getting around to it. This took months of on-and-off playing. I know there are much faster ways of doing it, but if I wasn't anal retentive about this sort of thing I wouldn't even be on that mad quest in the first place.

I imagine that, for a lot of other players, engaging and shooting down Mobius 1 is a white whale in itself. Lasers don't count!

mw2's spec ops missions. you have noooo idea how many times I have tried some of those missions on veteran. I actually gave up on 2, with one having 2 stars, and "High explosive" has 1 star. I'm also a serious perfectionist in Just Cause 2
Is high explosive that one with 15 juggernauts while you only have knives and grenades? That one was easy. Just find a friend, get a building with only one entrance, then one of you stands in the doorway. Juggernauts come, guy in the doorway gets downed, but they can't enter. So the other guy can sit there and fire missiles at them all day.

Time efficient? No. Cheap? Yes. But hey, 3 less stars to get.

For a while it was trying to finally beat minesweeper on expert.
Then I actually did it, and now I'm free...

GTA Vice City 100%.

I only had one of the RC missions to do. Then I had to pack up my PS2 and move to my new apt. When I unpacked all my stuff, I tried to reload my game... but the memory card file was corrupted. That was the ONLY file corrupted. :-(

I've never played that game again.

games I've beaten without losing a life
Wow, that's some hardcore gaming...

I don't think I could ever torture myself like that, but yeah Fallout 3 would be the one game I'd be fairly confident in achieving it with too.

In fact I'm 26 hours into my latest character and as far as I can remember the only time I died was from stupidly walking off an overpass while trying to get a nice vista saved :D

Dracula on I Wanna Be The Guy

I had gone on the Right-hand path (where you have to dodge the falling moon) and had beaten Mecha Birdo (which was no mean feat, especially considering I've never played any game from that era (not even Megaman!))

Dracula took me two days, and on the first, I was screaming and literally smashing the keyboard with my angry, achey fists.

After I beat him, I stopped playing the game. It was funny, but far too stressful for me, and I think that beating Dracula, especially considering I've never played any of those platformer games from the _-bit eras, was my proudest moment of gamer "cred"
I can't agree with you more, Dracula is a cheap-ass bastard, and I hope to never face that boss again. although I'm still playing it though, I'm currently stuck on the metroid level.

I forced myself to go all the way through Mirror's Edge without firing a shot (except that one part where you have to snipe the van). I'm of the firm belief that this is how the game was supposed to be played, so dammit I'm going to play it that way.

Oh, and I also like playing various Call of Duty games at the maximum difficulty when I'm stressed. It's like beating my head against a brick wall, but my skull is thick enough that I get the pleasure of watching the wall crumble in the end. :D

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. On Expert.
Only use pistols.
Why do I punish myself?
Not to brag... but I had a pretty easy time doing that... I got Akimbo Assassin easily on Expert, but that's mostly due to me being extremely lucky and getting an amazing team who actually worked together.

Right now it's Dead Rising. I need to beat it... except I always die and the save system was absolutely awful in that game so I end up playing the intro again... It was one of the first games I bought for 360... I need to beat it one day.
