Obvious thread is obvious. Include quotes from them if you want. Heres hoping it doesnt get drowned in the sea of anti-gun/pro-gun threads.

Dwight D. Eisnhower. One of my favorite Generals and Presidents. He had great ideas and was well liked, and he was from Kansas, so instant like. And his grandson came and spoke at my middle school school (who was named after Eisenhower), so that was cool

favorite quotes:
"A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both."

"An atheist is a man who watches a Notre Dame - Southern Methodist University game and doesn't care who wins."

"Any man who wants to be president is either an egomaniac or crazy."- Considering he never WANTED to be president...

"History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid."

"I despise people who go to the gutter on either the right or the left and hurl rocks at those in the center."

"I have one yardstick by which I test every major problem - and that yardstick is: Is it good for America?"

"I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it."

"I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him, he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared, and then he is gone."

"If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom."

John Moses Browning. An absolute genius when it comes to firearms, he is responsible for designing guns such as the famous Winchester rifle [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Model_1886#Winchester_Model_1886], Browning Auto-5 shotgun [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browning_Auto-5], M2 .50-cal Machine gun. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning_machine_gun], and Colt .45 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911_pistol], among others.
He has no famous quotes. :(

Temple Grandin. For those uninformed, she was diagonsed with High-Functioning Autism, and with that she was able to help make the modern American meat industry more human. And from what I have heard, she has alot of the same things as me (as I have Aspergers, which is similar). We both think in pictures, and can see pictures in our mind (although, I cant memorize a whole book page just by looking at it like she can) and we both have hyper-sensitive hearing (bells, horns, and other loud noises sound like "dentist drills in my ear". She is also an advocate of early intervention in autism, but is against trying to find a cure, since she beliefs it isnt an illness but just a differnt way the brain is wired.

Favorite quotes:
"People are always looking for the single magic bullet that will totally change everything. There is no single magic bullet."

"I am different, not less"

"You have got to keep autistic children engaged with the world. You cannot let them tune out."

"I think using animals for food is an ethical thing to do, but we've got to do it right. We've got to give those animals a decent life and we've got to give them a painless death. We owe the animal respect."

"If I could snap my fingers and be nonautistic, I would not. Autism is part of what I am."

"In an ideal world the scientist should find a method to prevent the most severe forms of autism but allow the milder forms to survive..."

John D. Rockefeller. My idea of the Ideal businessman, the one every CEO should try to be. And I just know I am going to get flak for having him on here, even though he gave away millions (modern=Billions) in building universitys, schools, libraries, etc.

favorite quotes:
"Don't be afraid to give up the good to go for the great."

"I had no ambition to make a fortune. Mere money-making has never been my goal, I had an ambition to build."

"Charity is injurious unless it helps the recipient to become independent of it."

"If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it."

"It is wrong to assume that men of immense wealth are always happy."

"I know of nothing more despicable and pathetic than a man who devotes all the hours of the waking day to the making of money for money's sake."

"I can think of nothing less pleasurable than a life devoted to pleasure."

"I would rather hire a man with enthusiasm, than a man who knows everything."

"Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing."

Werhner Von Braun. The man who built the first rockets for war and peace, and obviously a big pusher of space travel. The fact that he was Christian (specifically Lutheran) AND supported science doesnt hurt.

Favorite quotes:
"Basic research is what I?m doing when I don?t know what I am doing."

"I have learned to use the word 'impossible' with the greatest caution."

"One good test is worth a thousand expert opinions."

"We can lick gravity, but sometimes the paperwork is overwhelming."

"There is just one thing I can promise you about the outer-space program - your tax-dollar will go further."

"Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death."- I will totally agree with him there.

"My experiences with science led me to God. They challenge science to prove the existence of God. But must we really light a candle to see the sun?"

"Science does not have a moral dimension. It is like a knife. If you give it to a surgeon or a murderer, each will use it differently."

Erwin Rommel. Yes, he may have been a Nazi, but he was a damn good general and HATED Hitler, to the point he was involved in the Stauffenberg bomb plot in 1944. His tactics were genius, and he was respected by the Allies for a reason.

Favorite qoutes:
"In a man to man fight, the winner is he who has one more round in his magazine."

"Courage which goes against military expediency is stupidity, or, if it is insisted upon by a commander, irresponsibility."

"Mortal danger is an effective antidote for fixed ideas."

"Good soldiers, bad officers; however don't forget that without them we would not have any Civilization."

"War without Hate."

"Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning."- disputed weather he said that or Patton.

"Rommel had gained the world?s respect for his military genius. He was a legend. ... Rommel was reminiscent of the more romantic, chivalrous days of old ? and was a genuinely humane military officer."- Historian commenting on Rommel.

"He was ordered several times by Hitler to "Stand and Die." To fight to the last bullet, the last man. To execute and torture prisoners. He defied those orders."- Historian commenting on Rommel.

Robert E. Lee, hence why he is my avatar. Just like Rommel, he was among the dying breed of gentleman warriors, who cared for his men, had respect for those he fought, and tried to keep war as painless as possible. Also just like Rommel, who fought for Germany but hated Hitler/the Nazis, Lee fought for the South, but hated slavery.

Favorite quotes:
"I can anticipate no greater calamity for the country than a dissolution of the Union."

"It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it. "

"True patriotism sometimes requires of men to act exactly contrary, at one period, to that which it does at another, and the motive which impels them ? the desire to do right ? is precisely the same."

"It is history that teaches us to hope."

"I cannot consent to place in the control of others one who cannot control himself."

"We must forgive our enemies. I can truly say that not a day has passed since the war began that I have not prayed for them."

"I have fought against the people of the North because I believed they were seeking to wrest from the South its dearest rights. But I have never cherished toward them bitter or vindictive feelings, and have never seen the day when I did not pray for them. "

"Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character."

"The education of a man is never completed until he dies."

"You must be frank with the world; frankness is the child of honesty and courage."

"Never do anything wrong to make a friend or keep one."

Oh christ, I got that a few posts ago. It's scaring me D:

OT: I've never really had a hero for general life. If I take up something I'll find out about someone who's really good and I'll aspire to be like them, but only while I'm doing that one thing and nothing else. I don't actually have heroes for just life.

Is this an unusual attitude, or normal? I've never talked about this sort of thing with anyone before.

George Gideon Osborne.
He showed me that you don't have to be intelligent, resourceful or have the necessary qualifications in economics to become the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

I love you George, and I look forward to walking through Number 11 when I also become Chancellor. :D

Smedley Butler. Seriously, read about this guy. I'll make it easy for you!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smedley_Butler

He was a US Marine Major General in the early 1900's, who realized after a while that the United States was building him into an international thug. He was involved in China, the Carribean, the Philippines, South America, etc., and was told that he was serving his country. However, he was intelligent enough to realize that EVEN BACK THEN the US military was involved in criminal overseas actions to aid American business interests.

So he wrote about it. All of it. He had a book called "War is a Racket", which begins with "WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

His awesomeness doesn't end with exploiting the corruption of an entire country. In 1934 he was contacted to be part of what is known as "The Business Plot". This was a group of wealthy industrialists who were ATTEMPTING TO OVERTHROW THE US GOVERNMENT. Butler told a congressional committee about the planned coup, basically nipping it in the bud.

I like that this wasn't some college professor observing things from afar. He was actually involved in destructive military actions, and recognized the problems that the United States were introducing to the world, WAY before it was common knowledge.

That's enough of a write-up for now, but later I may expand on a few more of my heroes - Napoleon Hill, Carl Sagan/Neil Degrasse Tyson, Bruce Lee, Alan Watts, Leonardo DaVinci, John Horner (paleontologist), and Theodore Roosevelt (supreme badass).

I don't really have any "heroes" per se, but I look up to Stephen Hawking. He's possibly the smartest person alive, but he is stuck in a non-functional body. It's so sad to see a person with such intellect not being able to express himself properly.

I can't be the only person who's slightly concerned that the OP put not one but two Nazi's on his list? Granted neither had strong ideological ties fascism but they both helped the German government commit atrocities.

As for who my heroes, I guess it'd go:
1. Bertrand Russell
2. Ludwig Wittgenstein
3. Isaac Newton
4. Norman Borlaug
5. Voltaire
6. Hunter S Thompson

I won't pretend that they're perfect, but they are the people I look to for inspiration and guidance in my life.

Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Richard Bona, Niels H. Ø. Pedersen...

Pretty much any great musician, really.

Plus all the great scientists.

And Aragorn.

Oh, and anyone who ever went against "common knowledge" or religious dogma to find and spread truth in an environment where this was seen as heresy.
e.g. Galileo Galilei.

Mine is Friedrich Nietzsche.

He was an absolutely revolutionary thinker and has written some of the most beautiful poetic prose I have ever read. While his ideas are very "obvious" now-a-days, his thinking was heretical and dangerous at the time. He flagrantly and vehemently opposed the catholic church and petitioned people to live life for themselves, rather than to live life how the church dictated.

Goku

...and a man of many faces, but only one name, The Doctor.

EDIT: Other people I have an incredible amount of respect for, but wouldn't go as far as to call them "heroes:"
- Albert Einstein
- Galileo
- Pierre Trudeau

Notre Dame is a catholic University, Southern Methodist is a Methodist university (which is a movement of Protestant Christianity).

Catholics and Protestants have a very long history of fighting (even in real wars, like the 30 years war). The joke is basically that both team are a representation/embodiment of their associated religion. The victor makes their religion the "winner". An atheist would, hence, not care who the victor is as he or she would be rooting for neither team.

I don't get how that's witty or insightful though...
(And wouldn't it be more accurate to say the atheist roots for either team? :p)

Oh, and I came across this while snooping around for an explanation on google:
"Many citations of the quip exist in newspapers in the fall of 1954, all unattributed. The quote has sometimes been attributed to Dwight D. Eisenhower (then the president), but this is almost surely wrong. It doesn?t appear to be something he?d have said in 1954 or earlier.

SMU has attributed the quotation to popular comedian and movie star Bob Hope, and that seems to be correct. "

I also wouldn't really consider it a particularly quote worthy quip. Though, it seems like something Bob Hope would have said more than Eisenhower.

Captain John Luc Picard of the U.S.S Enterprise.
Why?

Its because he had a mind, he was devoted to his ideals, and he NEVER would back down from what he felt was right. He would never twist the Federation's founding ideals or what it meant to be a star fleet officer around.
Seriously besides Doctor Who name a person who bad mouths creatures and aliens who are god like as their day job.

Make it so.

Terry Pratchett. Author if the Discworld series, and someone who takes a very pragmatic approach to his Alzheimer's disease. And he's hilarious.

Quotes:

"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."

"Fantasy is an exercise bicycle for the mind. It might not take you anywhere, but it tones up the muscles that can. Of course, I could be wrong."

"In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded."

Mark Twain. Author of books such as Tom Sawyer, but more to the point, his views were interesting, and the observations he shared in his life were sheer brilliance. An incredible man, with a great mind, and he didn't take himself remotely seriously.

Quotes:

"A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read."

"Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please."

"I don't like to commit myself about heaven and hell - you see, I have friends in both places."

John "Mad Jack" Churchill. A soldier in WW2 who entered battle wielding a longbow and a basket hilted claymore. He didn't know shit about the commandos, but signed up with them because it sounded dangerous. A mortar shell hit his position, killing or wounding everyone except him as he played "Will Ye No Come Back Again?" on his bagpipes.

Quotes:

"Any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly armed."

"If it wasn't for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years."
