But in more recent years, I had a HELL of a time taking down Shiro at the end of Guild Wars: Factions. Partly because he would seek out any and all AoE damage dealers (such as yours truly) and turn them to stone for a few seconds, but also because I got into Factions late and groups taking down Shiro on normal difficulty were few and far between. The absolute worst part was when I realized I had missed my chance to snag the end-game exclusive pet (Imperial Phoenix) the first time, and would have to do it all over again. Fortunately, the second time wasn't nearly as hard - and he dropped a sweet Elementalist staff just for me.
And then the guy comes back to double team you together with the Lich Lord and a bunch of demons as their back-up in Nightfall. After my party cleared the room, killed the Lich Lord, we still spent well over two hours trying to kill him. The fact that everyone had 60% dp at that point didn't help very much. Of course, we couldn't take him down.

though I think the fight against Shiro AND the Lich was probably harder when Guild Wars: Nightfall first came out.
Indeed

Battle Scars + Impossible Odds = hax.

Sir Henry ************ on Bitter in "No More Heroes": It's a whole fight of dodging and plaving a random hit every five minutes, not a HARD fight, once you've memorized his attacks, but time-consuming as fuck.
Agreed. Even on a different mode, it's a long fight.

But the one that sticks out in my mind is Abyssion from Tales of Symphonia. The lowest level you can be for the fight is 60, and if you do that, it could take up to a half hour to beat him 'cause he so dam strong.

Culex in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars": Flattened my whole team except Bowser, who would only take 1 damage from any and all of Culex and his crystals' attacks, running out of Flower Power like, five minutes in left me using nothing but melees the whole fight.
Oh. My. Fucking. God. 14 hours later and I was down to just t he ice crystal. FUUUUUCK.
OMFG culex was a pain in the ass! I think culex was a harder fight, but the entire final boss fight in that game took a bit longer. One of the best games of my childhood.

Final Fantasy VII, I faced off against the One Winged Angel with two frogs and Vincent... Yah shot gunning that guy to death took forever... Don't know if it actually was the longest boss fight but it certainly felt like it was

Probably one of the later bosses in FFIX. Turn-based JRPGs have a habit of including a few ridiculous bosses, and FFIX has quite the boss-filled endgame. If you're unprepared, the multiple mini-bosses, the four sub-bosses, an optional bosses (the Grim Reaper, who sells Excaliber II upon defeat, IIRC?), two final bosses including a multi-staged one and a random out-of-the-blue spherical incarnation of evil and many random encounters between will wear you down. Especially as I remember rather limited saves and nowhere to stock up/heal up.
At least that's how I remember it. I haven't played to the end of that four-disc epic in about 7 years.

Fujiwara no Mokou in Imperishable Night. On a good run it takes 10 minutes to beat her... IF you can survive the massive onslaught of flaming bullets littering the screen.
Imperishable Night is one of the easier games in the series (I survived Reisen and beyond on one life once, and I'm not a good player at all) but the extra stage is kinda brutal, as usual.

Final boss - Star Ocean 4

Solid 30 minutes for a single fight. Did beat him first try, though. Still...30 minutes of pounding away in a Real Time combat system. Not to mention the boss before the final boss.
I have Star Ocean 4 sitting unplayed in it's box. All these comments are not helping me find the motivation to play it. I'm not a superboss-killer kind of guy, I want the game to be fun, I don't need the high blood pressure of taking these guys on.

It was easy, and I didn't even grind much. I just went straight through the story. I had a full stash of heal items, though. And the game gives you an HP regen skill called Autohealing at some point. It's just long because he has so much HP. But it was pretty easy. You can do it, easy.

My fights aren't usually hours long, but sometimes they can be very arduous, like the one against Green in Prototype. Fun, but arduous.

I only tend to notice particularly difficult fights too if I tend to die a lot and have to keep trying again and again and again and again. That can get just downright annoying.

I don't know how long I spent on Sigma in Megaman X5, as Zero.

Odd, though. The one time I decided to record the fight, I won.

Wasn't there one boss that lasted 13 hours or something and was meant to be played for that long?
I think it was the Pandemonium Warden in FFXI took the top guild 18 hours to down the damn thing. There was an article about it on The Escapist like 2 years ago about it :p
OT: I would have to say Omega Weapon in FF8. DAMN that crap took forever. I never got far enough into FF12 to face whatshisname.
the worst part was that they never beat it. the guild quit due to exhastionand the developers weakend it because the group were passing out. they dropped it's hp dramtically. i wonder if they did this for the japanese as well or they left it as it is in japan and are silently laughing behind are backs and whispering "pussies".

So I just spent 6 hours fighting Luci in Dante's Inferno. It fried my brain to the point the fight is ingrained into my head; I'm having like miniature Nam flashbacks XD
So Now, I'm curious, what's the longest you've spent throwing yourself against a brick wall of a boss?
Riku in Kingdom Hearts.

I spent damn near 12 hours trying to beat him. very frustrating for a 10 year old.
i went metal chocobo on his ass. it was fun. that fight was the reason i bought the game. but then again i would kill every heartless in the area before i moved on. If you want a har riku fight try fighting riku3 in the original gba kh chain of memories. i i died alot, but that was by far the best fight in the game, aside from the marluxia 1 fight. .....i got my ass whooped by captain hook too.

Mine would probably have to be General Raam on Gears of War as well. (Bearing in mind, I was playing on Legendary at the time.) It took me a solid 45 minutes to beat him - but I beat him.)

Though Ninja Gaiden 2's Giant Armadillos had me grunting and cursing under my breath a few times too.

Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy 7 because I had W-Summon linked with the Quadra magaicite, but with Knights of the Round you could only get 4 summons back to back. So it was just sitting there for a while just seeing Knight of the Round on the screen over and over again.

The game is a little obscure, but the Holoholo Bird in Baten Kaitos: Origins. Good fucking lord. I was stuck on it for the longest time and the attempt where I finally beat it took 3-4 hours at least.
Oh that thing was a ***** to be sure, but the Black Dragon in that same game was even worse x.x Didn't help that I was slightly underleveled but I did manage, eventually..
