In related news the minecraft wiki says that they are planing on adding dragons in the future. I wounder how big they get.... And I'm even more curious as to how the fuck were going to deal with the OP expectations I have for them.

I try to keep a light on me at all times, as well as my trusty sword, and if I want a bow, then yeah.

ZOMBIES!! Walk up to their face and click.

SKELETONS!! Zig zag towards them, occasionally sneaking works as you duck under the arrows, UND PUNCH THEM. Or sword. Dodge next arrow. If you have a bow, that helps. If you're really skilled, stay at a nice distance, and as they shoot an arrow at you, you can actually hit it back.

SPIDERS!! I use a combination of walking forwards and backwards as I hold the left mouse button. If done correctly, you can stop them form pouncing. Useful for string.

SLIMES!! Kill them and make the small ones pets.

CREEPERS!! Walk up to them, don't be afraid, and hit them in the face. Now haul ass backwards. If done correctly, their "fuse" resets. Rinse and repeat. Bow helps.

GHASTS!! Run like hell, deflect fireballs, or shoot a bow. If they get close enough (rare) personally, I like to hit them, and this does more damage than a bow.

ZOMBIE PIGMEN!! I don't bother. No useful drops, and if you piss them off the whole tribe goes after you.

WOLVES!! Once again, I don't bother. Nor do I want to, the widdle doggies... TAME THEM.

If all else fails, I run like hell, hit trees, build a corner and cry while clutching my pathetic wooden sword. That or I just dig down (must be careful). Or hide in a tree and wait for the glorious sun.

I'm a man. I don't run. I face my enemies, sword in hand, to destroy them before they destroy me. Creepers? Feh, I don't fear them. Skeletons? Psh, they're just wolf bait. Zombies? Ha, I can walk faster than they run. Spiders? Big deal, I can climb faster than an oversized bug. Ghasts? Okay, I need my bow for those, but I still don't cower in fear in front of them.

Here's what I have to say to the hostile mobs:
BRING IT ON

For skeletons: Circle them with a sharp object.

Zombies & Creepers: 1 Hit & Run.

Ghasts? I haven't killed one yet. Honestly, I don't venture into the nether much. Not after what happened the last time...
I killed one that was in a low ceilinged cave... it was trapped by the ceiling so I walked under it where it couldn't shoot and punched it to death. I felt so badass.

Carry some food. I cannot emphasize this enough. Bread and Porkchops are easy to get, and can easily spell the difference between life and death. If theres any fear at all, keep them in your bar.

Kill every cow you see. Always keep a little armor on, in the form of leather usually.

Most Mobs, just bash them. Circle Strafe, and watch where your Strafing too. Always be moving. You can outrun pretty much anything.

An iron sword is a good investment. It's only 2 iron.

Get a bow. Shoot the fricken creepers.

And lastly, the best combat strategy is to not fight. Sure, you need a little string from spiders, and some skeleton bones, but you can get that on a planned excursion when your all ready and the important stuff is tucked safely in a box somewhere. You don't need to get it at surprise moments. Make your base, and have room for a small farm, animals to spawn, your new building project, etc, and make it inaccessable to Mobs. Then (And this is very important) fill it with Glowstone/torches, so no nooks or cranny's are dark. It is very possible to have the only mobs that pose you any threat be the ones that are underground, in new, fresh caverns.
