I feel somewhat ashamed to admit the most emotional thing I've ever done in a video game was the quest line in WoW starting with "A Tale of Valor [http://www.wowwiki.com/Quest:A_Tale_of_Valor]." The ending of that quest did in fact bring tears to my eyes.

Perhaps I'm too attached to the allegorical subject matter.

1.

Not only was it a great plot twist, but interactivity was used to an extent I still have never seen elsewhere. Throughout most of the game, you have a decent amount of freedom to explore and choose things as you see fit. Throughout the entire game, you always have complete control over your character. But once you find out that every move you made was a the command of Fontaine, you lose your control. For the first and only time in the game, you cannot control your character's actions. This absolutely hammered the point home and significantly increased the impact of the scene: best storytelling moment I have ever seen.

2.
Aerith's death. It was emotional enough, but when Sephiroth accused Cloud of simply pretending, it got personal. Then he left a boss to fight: but we didn't get the boss music. We still had Aerith's Theme, a beautiful masterpiece that inspired us to fight not for experience, not for advancement, but for her. For Aerith.

3. When I found out the true purpose of Halo.

4.
When I was forced to choose whether to save Ashley or Kaiden. That was not an easy decision to make.

5.
The trial at the end of Justice for All, when Phoenix had to choose to defend someone he knew was guilty or risk the death of Maya. Dang, that was stressful.

6. Pretty much every second of Okami. That game was just beautiful.

7.
Running through the Zanarkand ruins, with an emotional rendition of Yuna's theme playing in the background, knowing that I was willingly running toward her death.

8.
Besides all the epic moments while fighting those epic beasts, the ending was incredibly hard-hitting. All we knew throughout the game was that Wander was doing all this to resurrect the girl he loved. That was the only goal we knew. Then, at the end, to control Wander as he was being sucked into oblivion... to tumble helplessly, reaching, stretching toward his love, toward the one thing he desired enough to unleash evil upon the world. Yearning for her, but slowly realizing, with an increasingly heavy feeling in the pit of your stomach, that there is no escape. That was simply tragic.

9. The finale of Beyond Good and Evil.

10.
When Crono died. The following scenes were quite emotional, and bringing him back was simply... touching, for lack of a better word. Truly heartfelt storytelling, even so early in gaming history: Chrono Trigger is a classic of interactive storytelling.

11. Last, but most certainly not least...
Pretty much every moment of it, really, but especially an event near the end of this Japanese visual novel. I don't cry during things like this very often: I can get quite emotional, but I don't cry. But the entire last bit of After Story (an extra half of the game that continues the story of Nagisa's arc) had me bawling. I have never been so affected by a story: ever.

Immersive: the beggining to bioshock, that plane crash is so well made and then that dark/light trek up the stairs and down to the bathsophere is so erie. Then the movie that plays and just hearing andrew ryan shout "RAPTURE!" as the slide shoots open to reveal this hidden city while squids and sharks swim by, then the entrance as the splicer rips apart the outside of the bathosphere....god I was literally shaking, wich isn't something I usualy do, it was terrifying and exciting, so amazing.

Saddest: When dogmeat was killed in fallout 3 I was like "Oh nooo! Noo please not dogmeant" and frowned....of course I just reloaded and he was okay, but still it was hard.

Great: Defeating the final collossus, on shadow of the collossus, the long ride through the gorgeous terrain, walking to the final area, and watching that mamoth beast rise from the ground, and knowing I would need to best it, despite my miniscule size, and pin of a weapon. Climbing up it with it shaking and lurching, gripping as hard as I can praying I don't fall, through the rain and black muck, slaming my sword in it's weak points, as hard as I can, and then as I slammed into the last, watching it fall to the ground like a mediore.
Okay, maybe that was a bit over the top for me just playing the game, but thats how gripping it was to me, I felt like I was actually doing it, I'd clench my teeth and grip my controller every time I'd grap onto the monster, and I kept shouting and wincing. It was pretty frekain amazing.
Goddamn Dogmeat... my one just died in Fallout 1 and no matter how many times I reload the muties kill him. He's just too weak :(

The whole damn game of Shadow of the Colossus was heartbreaking.

My favorite moment of utter beauty though is the ending of Ico. The ending after the ending, so to speak. Brought tears to my eyes it was so gorgeous.

I am surprised no one has mentioned any of the scenes from FF6 for sad moments. Got I felt so heart wrenched during the second half of the game where Celes take her "Leap of Faith". Everything about that part of the story was just so dark and gloomy. The sens of all hope lost, isolation, the thought of being the only one left and having no power and strength to do anything about it. After all she endured, it was hard not to feel bad for her and all her feelings are summed up in a few short scenes. Hell the music is still some of the saddest music I've heard in a game.

Celes' scene literally stole the show for me.

I feel your pain my brotha lol

yeah it was just so gripping, the character was silent, and only motivation was true love, so anyone could connect with him, you felt for him, or you felt you were him. So when you were fighting and winning or losing you felt it was you, amazing way to get you into the character. Also the graphics and atmosphere was so immersive and gripping, the game just grapped you and won't let go.

I have yet to play ico, I've been meaning to, but I either forgot or chose something else every time I remembered. Now my ps2 broke and I can't play either :( grrrr.

Saddest... It goes to Lost Odyssey in a certain scene in disc 1. In the spoiler, there is a 7 minute video of the scene. That's the saddest moment in any game I've played and I usually laugh when "sad" stuff happens in a game.

Another sad moment would be in the Bard's Tale when.
Your dog dies.

Greatest would be in Mass Effect when
Sovereign and the Geth are attacking the Citadel.

And immersive, I'll agree with the person who said Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle...

Emotional-Pretty much my entire playthroughs of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Saddest-The ending of MGS3, HL2: EP 2, and while the ending to Shadow of the Colossus isn't sad, it was extremely moving.

Most Immerssive-System Shock 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Morrowind, Fallout 1,2 and 3, Silent Hill 2, Killer7, Beyond Good and Evil, KOTOR, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Theif 2, and Assassin's Creed

Greatest-
Dead Rising: Killing a zombie with a bowling ball, bench press, TV, broad sword, battle axe, dinner plate, CD case, the Real Mega Buster, or with your bare hands.

Saint's Row 2: Dressing as a pink ninja and armed with a chainsaw and duel uzis while tackling a mission where you storm a nuclear power plant to steal hazardous waste in order to inject it into a dude's face!

Ico /Braid /Portal /Zack and Wiki: Solving a a really challenging puzzle without any form of help leaves you with a very huge sence of satisfied accomplishment

Shadow of the Colossus: Taking down any of the Colossi.

"A man chooses; a slave obeys..... Kill."
I can't remember a game where I actually yelled at the screen in utter horrified frustration other than the moments directly after this dialogue.

Saddest

Probably the
death of Carlos
in Saints Row 2. Just beautifully done in complete contrast to the slick over the top nature of the game, it's wonderfully underplayed and very touching.
Ya, I just had to kick some ass after that one. I didn't even do any side missions until I completed that story arc on Saint's Row 2.

Mass Effect! THAT decision............... Not gonna lie, I cried (every time) :'(
May you please clarify on what decision you mean?
There is a trigger point in the game where you have to make a tough decision (don't know how to do the 'spoiler', thing and didn't want anyone having the game ruined cos of me and my big mouth, lol) so I can PM you, or if someone can tell me how to do the spoiler I'll do that :) Thankees in advance
To use spoilers:
-Content-
Without the spaces.
OK will give that a go, thanks :)
You get to a certain point in the game where you have to choose to let either Kaiden or Ashley die, you cannot save both, and at this point if you have followed conversation options you will have romantic feelings for one and friendship with the other, and dammit it is sad
