Inspired by the "Most-Hated Bad Status" thread, I give you this thread, the "What is the most-hated and bullshitty power or attack or COMBO or whatever that you have ever come across, EVER?!" compilation. (Or "Your Most-Hated Enemy Power" thread, for short.)

This is a hard thing for me to figure on here, so I may just end up giving out multiple hates just because I can get quite bitter.

We'll start with my hatred of enemies whose defeat is based somehow around chance as opposed to anything definite. This is an enemy whose power is literally to BE full of shit by using a sort of rotating gamble out of your control or influence that screws your ability to win. (This is completely different, however, from the Fortune Boss-Shadow in Persona 3, whom YOU can screw over with the gambling wheel.)

Now, I love Atlus games alot, but there are some things which are not cool even to me. I am, suffice to say, an expert at Persona and related games. Even still, the extra business with the Fiends in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne can be pushing it, and no Fiend is more pushing it than Trumpeter, the last one on the list. To explain, he is first of all situated far from any place of support, which means whatever preparations you DO take will be hampered by whatever you encounter along the way. And then, he's long-winded and annoying.

So, after probably skipping his intro-sequence for the Nth time, he explains...his method of attack. His theme is that he is the herald of God and that after so many blows of the horn (his turns), something will happen. On one, it will kill the weakest being on the board, and on another a full revival of all HP will be given to the weakest one. The weakest being is defined by HP, of course, and that will not be him unless you're really cranking down on him. The instant death is unblockable even if you're using a power that would block death. The instant full-heal-and-SP can bring you back to the beginning of this fight if it happens to Trumpeter himself. Everything in between is every high-level element-area spell in the book.

Now, this might seem like something you could potentially and logically use against him, because it involves timing and keeping track of whose health is what and so on. Problem: HE LIES! He is a Fiend, and whether by screw-up in the programming or deliberate action, his explained pattern of attack is a LIE. He's not really counting on any scale, or any interpretation of what the scale MEANS, or certainly not even what it'll say on a FAQ-sheet about him. LIES, LYING, LIAR. He miscounts on purpose. I know this for having taken score and count several times, as the son of a math teacher, so I don't flub the numbers. In the end, I used the strategy of bringing out a weak monsters out to be the target of his ire.

So, I've named 'gamble-power' enemies. YOUR TURN!

Astaroth from Soul Calibur (IV in particular). The Ability to not only hit you from across the stage is annoying, but then breaking into a combo that will always reduce you to about a 5th of your health bar. I have had the animation for the combo burned into my brain for how many times other players will use it.

Overpowered/outlandish attacks has been named.

Well there is that knockdown attack that the Seer Council use in DoW II: Retribution last stand mode.

Sure there are many units that have a knockdown ability, but for some reason these guys can do it even if you equip knockback immunity. Even the Hive Tyrant, who doesn't even have a proper "knocked down" animation can be knock downed by them...he kind of just slides away.

Immortality. I hate that the last two elder scrolls games started making essential NPCs unkillable. Nothing kills immersion and frustrates me like having the developer step in for a jarring moment waggling their finger at me. A lot of games do this with friendly fire, but most are pretty consistent about it, so you come to expect it during the game.

I also hated that every enemy in Rage could do way more than you in manipulating their environment. you moved like a damaged tank, and are surrouded by coked up monkeys with submachine guns. Super frustrating.

Dragon Age: Origins - Stinging Swarm.

Nature damage generally isn't a problem in the game...until some Hurlock/Genlock Emissary sends a Stinging Swarm at me. Then I have to chug potions until it goes away.

Oh, you mean how Ghosts and Mutants and such-like could ninja-leap and so on? I understand, though I have to say it's all they had going for them.

Yeah that was annoying. Also, I played it on the 360, and apparently no one playtested the controls for a control stick at ID. Because it sucked, hard. No aim assist, nor any other normal conventions for an FPS console port. I'm sure it wasn't too bad with a mouse, but having those little fuckers jumping around the map while you stumble over paint cans and invisible walls trying to track them like a howitzer tracks a f-16 was fricking stupid. Also, RAGE sucked on a lot of other levels, the least of which was the terrible optimization.

Well, I can't speak for the X-Box, as I have a PS3, but I enjoyed the game myself. Also, if you're planning to hold a conversation with me, please use the quote button, as that would notify me to the direct reply.

Hmm... that's a tough one... Oh, in the first Silent Hill, the first boss battel (The Lizard) had an attack that would instantly kill you, which happened to me because I knew what to do, but panicked.

Uhhh....Kryll.

I guess smarty pants OP never played Gears 1.
I don't have an X-Box, dude. We would've accepted that answer without the snide remark, thank you.

General RAAM from Gears of War 1 on Insane. Out of cover? Instant death Troika. In cover? Reaver buddies will one shot you with Torque Bows or Boomshots. In cover away from Reavers? Hah hah, it sure is dark over there, isn't it? *Kryll Rape*

One of the few bosses from any game I can think of that can literally kill you in an instant on 98% of the map. There are only 2 spots that are safe from him, and both are on opposite ends of the area, requiring a highly dangerous and luck-based sprint if he gets close. You WILL die. A lot. The next Souls game will be called RAAM's Souls. The only consolation is that, for a final boss, he really doesn't have all that much help. As long as you are landing your shots when he doesn't have his shield up, he'll go down quick enough.

Attacks that have no counter or defence, instant damage and such.
Nothing frustrates me more than having a battle of chance or hoping my opponent doesn't press his IWIN button.

That, or infinite reinforcements, I'm looking at YOU Black 'n White 2.

You're not the only one mate, those gits have given my Hive Tyrant some grief too.

My vote goes to the "Shock" effect from Spiral Knights, every few seconds it either damages your Knight, paralyzes your Knight for a few seconds or does nothing. Say what you like about effects like Stun but they are at least consistent, with Shock you may as well roll a dice because you can be unaffected, constantly paralyzed or anything in-between.

And god help you if you fall into the loop of "Get paralyzed by Shock, get hit by enemy who can cause Shock which causes you to have even more Shock"

Any ability (especially in RPG's) that let's an enemy not just restore some health but there entire health bar. Insta-kills are second and spamming status ailments third.

Also, any enemy from the Persona/SMT games who can inflict the Instant Death/Mudo status effect. Now, in most RPGs Instant Death isn't too big of a deal, as it typically has a very low chance of working and there is rarely a version that can hit more than one party member at a time. Odds are definitely against it working, even in instances where the CPU likes to...influence the RNG to it's favor. Persona/SMT doesn't bother with silly little things like "fair". The RNG is never on your side even at the best of times, and Mamudo (AOE Instant Death) is available to enemies fairly early on in the game. If it gets cast, you have to start lighting votive candles and pray that it ONLY takes down one character. And if their are multiple enemies who can cast it? And they get the first turn? Forget about it, you might as well just restart your system.

And Dark Souls has that god awful Curse status effect. Luckily, there aren't too many enemies who can inflict it, but the ones who can are execessively annoying (and tend to come in large groups), and can inflict it much more easily than Poison or Bleeding, the other two (and not nearly as dangerous) status effects. What does Curse do, you ask? Curse PERMANTANTLY reduces your total health by one half. It doesn't wear off. Ever. Not even after death (which is gonna start becoming MUCH more common, btw). The only way to get rid of it is to use a special item (which can only be bought from two merchants in the game, and aren't cheap), or to take an exceedingly long walk through a relatively high-level area (still at half-health, mind) to find an NPC who will remove it for you. Its not even immediately obvious where he is; he's actually off the beaten path somewhat. Just to make matters worse. Of all the things in Dark Souls which piss me off (no small number), it's probably the most annoying.

Personally, I hate the friggin Plaster Spider Splicers that show up in Fort Frolic in Bioshock.

What really gets me about them is that they're completely silent, they don't speak, don't yell when you kill them, they're just so... creepy.

I guess if I had to put this in the form of a power, it would be "The power to make no noise when moving". Because you can never tell when one's sneaking up behind you, until your life bar starts draining.
