Half-Life 2.
That's not the fault of the game (it is very very good.), it's the fault of the fans, claiming that HL2 is gaming's second coming of Jesus. This is also true for Mass Effect, but to nowhere even close to the degree of HL2.

Modern Warfare 2
This is pretty much the exact opposite of HL2, but the same case as well. The vast majority of people herald it as the greatest shooter ever made. I'd have put Black Ops, but people were a little more suspicious after the whole Infinity Ward thing, and not as many people liked Treyarch.

Bioshock
See: Half-Life 2.

Dragon Age
All CoD 4 clones
All Bethesda games
Doom 3
Jade Empire
Bioshock (2 too)

Also, why there are so many people complaining about puzzles in HL2? There were only two, and one of was just pushing a washing machine into a basket...

The Halo Series. Their not terrible games, their just not very good, and ridiculously over hyped. Reach is probably my personal most overrated game of all time, I actually really don't like that one at all.

Personally I don't think Bungie are great game devs either, as they did pretty much the same thing over and over and actually made it worse, sort of like Eidos with Tomb Raider. My best game in the series, Wars, wasn't even made by them.

Halo for sure
i'd say CoD anything >.> but since i don't play FPS, not gonna comment ( going off what a friend bragged about)

Dragon Age also, over rated, but still good
not sure on Mass Effect yet, gottem both super cheap on a steam sale an thus not far into it yet >.>

WoW, by virtue of being WAY more boring to play then advertised

Mass Effect 2: the gameplay was robotic, the metaphorical plot ship was filled with holes and it railroaded you to a comical degree, and SPACE BABY.
I loved the game, but i do agree with the space baby. The idea was, i guess, all reapers are made from bodies of races so that one looked human to a degree. But when you see the last shot there are thousands of ships that look like the original reaper vessal so that idea sucked. Maybe that space baby should have been more of a human/reaper hybrid. Would have been more interesting and less of an anti climax.
there's actually a theory i read by some fans that said what if the reapers were all like that? based of a one species's bodies and then they form a hard armor like outside? one that was sort of like uniform among reapers, but inside there's the starting base? and that human/reaper was just a larva before it had formed it's outside layer?

My list?
-Call of Duty series. (I like it once in a while, but I haven't even come close to prestiege. Or even advancing a rank...)
-World of Warcraft. (They can't pull me back in. Never touched it. Never wanted to.)

That's all.

AC 2: I agree, it was good, but I don't think it was worth the hype.

ME: I've played both games in the Mass Effect series, and the 2nd is undoubtedly far superior, but Mass Effect 1 was still a great game that far surpasses just about any other game in the past few years, maybe not the best in the decade, but it's close.

Fable 2: Everyone I talked to didn't like this game, it's not overrated.

Halo. We get it, "Master Chief is a badass" and the "multiplayer kicks ass" this game has been going on for 6 titles now, I think the Chief has earned a happy retirement.

Modern Warfare 2. Horrible game. A massive step backwards from Modern Warfare 1 in EVERY aspect.

Thing about FFVII is that it's held up as the best in the series or best game ever or whatever, so naturally the "I hate everything popular" people so sadly common on this site immediately add it to their "hate" list. There WILL be at the very least one person hating on it in this thread at some point, it's practically a mathematical certainty.

*Would like to clarify that he has never played any FF games at all*
I think his point is that you don't know what a decade is...

Last decade = First minute of 2001 till the first minute of 2011. FF VII was released in 1998, so, two decades ago.

...HOLY FUCKING SHIT FFVII WAS RELEASED 2 DECADES AGO... I feel old now.

(note: I know, two decades, as in, in that decade. Not 20 years ago. Roughly 12/13 years ago... Still makes me feel old...)

I like Fable 2. It wasn't Earth-shatteringly innovative, and it didn't live up to the hype, but yes, it was fun.

Final Fantasy X-2, Final fantasy XII (which was basicaly return of the jedi) and final fantasy XIII. Just in case final fantasy fans deside to hunt me down and kill me i would like to state that final fantasy VII to final fantasy X are 4 of the best games I have ever played and I love them to bits I just think that ther has not been a good FF since. I mostly choose to forget most of what happened in X-2 and just add the happy tidus ending onto X so that in my mind the happy ending happened without having to sit through all the crap that was the rest of x-2.

Starcraft 2 would probably be my first since the game play hardly changed at all, I couldn't say the new units and abilities were any better (especially when some of them can only be used by experts), the dialogue through the cinematics was so pathetic I found it to be torture and the story was just plain garbage. And who can forget all the new restrictions and backwards bullshit with B.net2.

SSB Brawl since it was no where as good as Melee, fuckin' felt blocky and slow while I'm tripping over for no reason. Also it was a lot harder to combo anyone, all me and my friends were doing was just taking turns and we would nearly last up to 300% most of the time. I'm not even over exaggerating! I noticed all of this in the first 20 minutes a long with whole bunch of other shit that would take a whole page to list.

Modern Warfare 2, while not continously named greatest game ever like the last 2 I mentioned, it does have a gigantic following of aggressive fanboys who couldn't help but tell me what they think. It's just like the Avatar movie of gaming, mostly just flash with nothing special about it.

half lambda, i mean, life 2 - it was quite good, but not the hyped messiah of (pc)games (although i was happiest when i finally finished it; not a good sign for a game)

dragon age: origins - THAT'S what all the fuss was about? come on...
i'll prefer good old baldur's gate any day! or KotOR. or Jade Empire (now that was great... at last, not always the same elves and orcs and (western) dragons and swords and arrows and what else makes your standard western-medieval-fantasy-theme). or anachronox. or planescape torment. or...

world of warcraft - i still don't understand why it is so very popular, it's just like any other mmo; standard classes, questing, grinding, pvp-ing, more grinding, raiding, even more grinding, no housing, and it doesn't even look particularly good. star wars galaxies, now that was a great mmo (before the jedi village and combat upgrade and all that s**t they did to kill the game)

I have to agree about Assassins creed 2
You just press square (or X for xbox) to hit the people, it's not that exciting
Brotherhood made up for it though with a multiplayer

And my other thoughts would be DOODLE JUMP. That dang obssesive game on iPhone, where you just JUMP. My mate had 4 days gameplay on that, that's more than my game time on call of duty black ops by a long shot :L

And don't forget, need for speed hot pursuit...'nuff said.
The handling is so bad and the game is so repetitive come onnnn.

World Of Warcraft. Bad? No. Overrated? Personally, I think so. It's one of the most popular games in the history of ever, and I don't see what it offers that's so different or such a vast improvement from other MMOs other than market saturation.

Mind you, I can't comment on whether Cataclysm is deserving of the praise it gets, because I haven't played it.

Well, since Silent Hill 2 (released in 2001) got between 70-85% ratings on average (depending on the system), and since it is without a doubt the best game ever made, anything rated higher than that was obviously overrated.
Ok, the grossest offender I can think of is GTA4. Lauded by critics, who were either paid off or had the intelligence of gerbils, the actual game was actually shit. The driving was terrible, the graphics were horribly gray-ish brown-ish, the protagonist was an idiot, the story was boring and way too serious, and that cell phone was the most retarded idea in the history of gaming. Plus it was just New York all over again. Boring, terrible, awful. Let's just pretend it never existed.

I can think of a few that have left me bewildered by their popularity and one or two that have left me bored regardless of peoples utter devotion.

The obvious one would be the CoD: MW series.
While I can appreciate they are good games well made and certainly play competently enough I'm just left bored by the 'real' world war canvas and the fans who take it far too seriously or just take the piss.

HALO.
No reason, to be honest. Maybe I missed the boat on this one as I do play a lot of FPS or maybe it's a case of buzz overkill and being left disappointed by what turned out to be a pretty mediocre shooter. The shitty driving sections didn't help.

Final Fantasy
walkfightwalkfightwalk....... blah fuckling blah

Gears of War
People are excited by this shit? Seriously?

Bioshock

I've tried a few times to have a crack at this but I just cannot get drawn into the story or atmosphere. All seems a bit trying too hard to be desperately mysterious.
Final Fantasy was released about 20 years ago you know that right?

Final Fantasy X. The game came out at the start of the decade, but fuck it, it was horrible. Now when everyone thinks of Final Fantasy it's either X or VII. They don't deserve that.
I know you haven't been here long but you will start to notice around here that everyone likes every FF but VII and likes to comment on their FF being better than it even though they already stated they preferred another FF which kinda makes the comment they usually make redundant.

Well I want to say FFX-2 but it was not overrated and widely hated so I can't say that. Although it did have the best version of ATB. Halo 3 for me was the most overrated. It really let down the rest of the games in the series.

Easy choices right here.

Call of Duty Modern Warfail 2. A huge step back, not worthy to mention all the "not balanced for" issues when the whole games was as balanced as a drunken monkey trying to do a stall with a BMX on top of a stake. It brought K/D whoring to the masses and this in effect killed FPS gaming as people no longer really cared about winning, but their e-peen and K/D (not that you would have any use for stats in CoD, because unlike BF there is no place or retrieve them, and have them constantly updated automatically outside the game and show them off as your signature on the forums)

Call of Duty Black Ops, although I must admit it's lightyears ahead of MW2, it still sucks because gained massive hype for nothing

Halo 3 (a.k.a. "My first FPS" for just about half the Xbox users, also, FPS belong to the PC, it's just painful to watch someone turning around playing a FPS on a console)

Halo Reach (not as bad as Halo 3, there were improvements, but it's still bad)

Red Dead Redemption - I don't know, I just don't like how every 12 year old Xbox user suddenly became a western fan; and it's also console exclusive, thought it wouldn't have been better than GTA 4 and it's share of obvious console port characteristics.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - I have the disagree with the person that said vehicle handling got worse. Vehicles improved tenfold at that chapter. It just screams console port.

Forza 3, just because it's not worth playing racing games because every second person is trying to shove you into a wall, and let's not mention how the VW group bribed T10 to make every single VW, Audi, Seat whatever go 2 times faster than in real life.

GT5 - Now this is even worse than Forza 3. Six years waiting for what ?

Vietcong 2 - This is just the "Breakin 2 : Electric Boogaloo" of the game world. First one was decent, but then this comes out and it gets over 9000x worse.

Uncharted series - I fail to see what's so fun and immersive. the whole level design is a pipe with two bends in it and it requires about as many skills to play as it takes to butter a slice of bread.

Battlefield Bad Company 2. Slightly. I am a Battlefield fan myself, but for God's sake abandon the singleplayer. Or at least they could've kept it less serious like in the first game. I don't know what's with the misconception that a FPS has to be serious. Basically : MP is where it's at, and if they're gonna keep doing the BC series, they might as well keep the SP story fun. Multiplayer...hell, I'm still lovin' it.

Medal of Honor 2010. It didn't live up to it's hype. Yes, I enjoyed it. I loved it but it could've been a lot better.

Crysis. OK, let's be honest, do people buy it nowadays for the cheap gameplay or just to test their PCs, this being nothing more than an interactive graphics benchmarking program.

Starcraft 2. Worse than GT5...I can't even remember how many years for...basically a graphics update. Still the same pissed off Koreans. S.S.D.D. (or should put up a "Y" instead of that last "D")

For next decade I hope that this list will not include Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 or Red orchestra 2 : Heroes of Stalingrad (these being the first games from this decade I'm interested in)
