Yeah, Ulver's like Burzum in that regard, sans the jail time and white supremacy shenanigans. Except Ulver's had high quality ambient music, in comparison with Burzum's mixed quality. I'll admit that Varg is one of my favorite musicians, despite his checkered past and ridiculously extremist beliefs.
Ulver had about as much success, and they did so without prison time. So yay for them. =D
Yeah, I understand. It took me awhile to get into it, but I absolutely love it. Again, diversity. Arcturus and Sigh also being fantastically eclectic bands that fall under black metal.
I'm not as big a fan of prog, though Cynic is one of the better progressive bands out there, next to Psychotic Waltz for me. And Equilibrium's pretty good folk metal from what I've heard of them, though I've been meaning to get into folk metal a bit more. About the only folk bands that I listen to regularly are Elvenking and Ensiferum, something that I've been meaning to expand on for awhile.
I've heard a bit of David Townsend before. Didn't catch my ear before, sadly.
As far as mostly solo musicians go, Vladimir Cochet tops my list. His stuff's abrasive and none too accessible, but most is extremely beautiful in a way. Not recommended if more symphonic black/death metal isn't your cup of tea. Really, I could suggest several bands, but I wouldn't want to spam this thread TOO much with suggestions. xD
I've actually never heard of Burzum before... but seeing as they're a bunch of jailed, white supremacists, I might just want to stay away from that type of music :3
Yeah, I often times like bands based on their amount of diversity. That's the reason I love Devin Townsend's stuff so much. No two of his albums sound the same. One's an Earthy mix of heavy songs, while another's a peaceful ambient record. Hell, even some albums change theme halfway through and back again

But, yes, folk metal is pretty good, but there are a limited number of them, unfortunately. Ensiferum, Equilibrium, Eluveitie, Turisas, Amon Amarth, Korplikaani and Alestorm are the only ones I can think of at the moment, to be honest, but what there is of it, it's very very good. Same with melodic death metal. I quite enjoy that too, but there isn't a whole lot of it that I really like :/
But, honestly, I'd say Japan has the most of my favourite metal bands... but perhaps that would be best saved for PMs as I too don't want to spam the hell out of this thread XD
