I honestly can't stand metal at all. To me, it's often a great example of artists with some actual musical talent who decide instead to make speaker-mud. I have yet to find a metal band that I actually like, and I've gone through all the decades trying to find something that piques my interest. It frankly just bothers me, Disturbed especially.
[sub]Although Disturbed and Halo is a winning combination in my book, not sure why but it's the truth[/sub]
i agree with u completely except for the musical talent part i think that these people are just drunk, emotional, f@#$wads who should go to school and get at least half an education or they could just live in an asylum wearing nothing but a straight-jacket for the rest of their useless, dark, and pathetic lives!
i can not say this in any other way whatsoever
theunreliablecritic, by the time I reply to your comment, you may have recieved many more from other users. However, I must say something about your opinion that musicians of metal have no musical talent. On the contrary, many of them were rather accomplished.
Tarja Turunen of Nightwish practiced opera, which is quite obvious in her works. Our opinions of talent may vary, but her voice has the power, range, delivery of several years of practice to my ears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woxW52bbn0c. Oh, by the way, she attended Sibilius Academy, a music school. I think that's more than half an education.
John Petrucci of Dream theater went to Berklee College of Music along with two of his future bandmates (John Myung and Mike Portnoy). If that's not enough of an academic accomplishment, these three have been practicing for at least thirty years. The dedication is present throughout the rest of the members of Dream theater. Many times these musicians wrote songs with complex chord and rhythm progression with enough pride to finish the song in masterpieces at least 4 minutes long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhedP71N9gQ. I know, the length of the songs do not matter much, but the structure of the songs are comparable to the elements of classical composers (baroque, romantic, and modern too, not just of the classical era)
Now there are some great musicians that cannot really be traced by written biography. One of these musicians i'm talking about is Jari Maenpaa. His style is comparable with Dream Theater, both show elements of progression. But the musicians you smeared, i assume, consists mostly of those who uses harsh vocals. Yes, this man uses harsh vocals, but he can still sing well also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co4mOX74Wc0 at 3:10-3:41 you can hear is one example of that instance. I won't give you anymore specific examples in that song but if you listen around, you can also pick up the complicated structure of that song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc4WFzl-6Xs another nice song. Has elements of harsh and clean vocals, refined song structure with many movements and varying styles.
I can go on with many more musicians and bands that defies your assumption. Unfortunately, I have other business to attend to. These three i mentioned above were schooled and had clear musical mastery. I frankly do not care about their habits, of alcohol, behavior, insanity. In fact, these ids make them seem more masterful of society, but this will be rather subjective with too many opposing variables, thefore i will not argue for those assumptions. Please do have a nice day.
