I hate it. It's just mindless, loud, banging of instuments. It has nothing worth liking, and I can't stand it. I'm a very open person in general, and metal (heavy, death metal all that) along with RAP are the only music genres that make my head spin!!!

Oh, and also R&B, Raaah!! >:

I'm an outspoken fan of the metal genre, especially Scandinavian bands and Disturbed. I've been listening to metal since the first time I watched The Matrix and heard Rob Zombie's Dragula during the club scene. Since metal is getting back into the mainstream for the first time since the 80s (thanks primarily to bands like Disturbed), I want to hear your opinion of the genre.
Bands above are barely metal.
I know there is a lot of discussion over whether Disturbed is metal or not (what, punk rock? R&B? What else could they be besides metal?) and that Rob Zombie got softer in his later years, but how can you not consider bands like In Flames, Children of Bodom, Korpiklaani, or Nightwish metal? What is your definition of metal? Where do you draw the line between what is and what isn't metal?

I honestly can't stand metal at all. To me, it's often a great example of artists with some actual musical talent who decide instead to make speaker-mud. I have yet to find a metal band that I actually like, and I've gone through all the decades trying to find something that piques my interest. It frankly just bothers me, Disturbed especially.

[sub]Although Disturbed and Halo is a winning combination in my book, not sure why but it's the truth[/sub]
i agree with u completely except for the musical talent part i think that these people are just drunk, emotional, f@#$wads who should go to school and get at least half an education or they could just live in an asylum wearing nothing but a straight-jacket for the rest of their useless, dark, and pathetic lives!

i can not say this in any other way whatsoever
theunreliablecritic, by the time I reply to your comment, you may have recieved many more from other users. However, I must say something about your opinion that musicians of metal have no musical talent. On the contrary, many of them were rather accomplished.

Tarja Turunen of Nightwish practiced opera, which is quite obvious in her works. Our opinions of talent may vary, but her voice has the power, range, delivery of several years of practice to my ears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woxW52bbn0c. Oh, by the way, she attended Sibilius Academy, a music school. I think that's more than half an education.

John Petrucci of Dream theater went to Berklee College of Music along with two of his future bandmates (John Myung and Mike Portnoy). If that's not enough of an academic accomplishment, these three have been practicing for at least thirty years. The dedication is present throughout the rest of the members of Dream theater. Many times these musicians wrote songs with complex chord and rhythm progression with enough pride to finish the song in masterpieces at least 4 minutes long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhedP71N9gQ. I know, the length of the songs do not matter much, but the structure of the songs are comparable to the elements of classical composers (baroque, romantic, and modern too, not just of the classical era)

Now there are some great musicians that cannot really be traced by written biography. One of these musicians i'm talking about is Jari Maenpaa. His style is comparable with Dream Theater, both show elements of progression. But the musicians you smeared, i assume, consists mostly of those who uses harsh vocals. Yes, this man uses harsh vocals, but he can still sing well also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co4mOX74Wc0 at 3:10-3:41 you can hear is one example of that instance. I won't give you anymore specific examples in that song but if you listen around, you can also pick up the complicated structure of that song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc4WFzl-6Xs another nice song. Has elements of harsh and clean vocals, refined song structure with many movements and varying styles.

I can go on with many more musicians and bands that defies your assumption. Unfortunately, I have other business to attend to. These three i mentioned above were schooled and had clear musical mastery. I frankly do not care about their habits, of alcohol, behavior, insanity. In fact, these ids make them seem more masterful of society, but this will be rather subjective with too many opposing variables, thefore i will not argue for those assumptions. Please do have a nice day.

Oh wow. This was one of the best posts I have ever read. I am a huge fan of Nightwish, but I know nothing about the band members and I thank you for confirming what I had assumed. As for the Dream Theater and Jari Maenpaa segments, I'd like to thank you for introducing me to two new bands and providing excellent links. This is by far the greatest first post I have ever read and I hope to see you on these forums often.

Im not denying Nightwish,Korpiklaanni,CoB, or Inflames as Metal.

But Rob Zombie or Disturbed barely sounded like metal ever.
Id define them more as hard rock.

Im not saying their bad, im just saying their not metal, but hard rock.
I have never known the difference between hard rock and metal. I know that there must be a key difference between the two, but I haven't heard it. At what point does a hard rock song become a metal song?

disturbed is weak generic radio crap. The singer needs a club to the head. People obsessed with disturbed need to jump into the deep end and listen to some real metal.

I've been a metalhead since I heard Marilyn Manson in middle school (I hate him now, but eh we all make mistakes). It just caught on. First it was anger, then it was speed, now I just don't care for most anything that isn't hard, fast, thumpy, and about satan or overthrowing the world.

If someone says metal sounds mindless or untalented I have to question your ability to hear different sounds... Clearly you ears are not working, or you're too caught up in your assumptions about it that you won't ever let yourself like it. Or you're a music snob who is missing the point.

I do listen to most kinds of music to one degree or another. I'm not the guy with the stupid haircut and pierced everywhere making everyone uncomfortable. I just respect metal for always doing it's own thing, whether they want something poetic, angry, anti-establishment, fantastic and silly, or whatever. We don't have a fuckin box and we're not here to have a million fans. No repetitive ***** worship songs here sirs, and good fucking riddance. If I hear another song about someone's whore girlfriend I'm going to spontaneously combust. There's more to the world than being a self obsessed cry baby teenager.

Metal also is a dedicated sub-culture with it's own rules, norms, history, and customs. I know when I go into a room I'll probably get along with anyone in a metal shirt. I like that kind of thing. If anything I hate that metal is getting more popular with shitty power metal bands like Dragonshit. Get outta my scene little kids. Shoo.

IMHO I think Magnesium is the best thing since sliced bread, and Calcium comes a close second, but as for Tin and Iron, I'm not a huge fan.

Ive found that it mostly sounds all the same to me. Not that it sounds bad, but i prefer the more out of center stuff that people would call barely metal.

I love metal from time to time well the progressive kand anyway.
I'm not a fan of Black Metal and I don't Like the whole corpse paint thing and running trough woods with axes and stuff.
But I like my heavy guitar riff and fast drumming as long as it's solid like Between the buried and me.
