I think the Search Bar is made of metal. LOL. Metal is Raptor Jesus' gift to music once stolen from the grip of Cthulu. It's true.
Dude, that was this thread that we talked about the glory of Raptor Jesus. Someone just necroed it.

I'm into some bands in and around the metal genre: Metallica, Megadeth, Meshuggah, Tool, Opeth, Helmet, Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, Melvins, Botch, Deftones, etc.
Good list you got there; you have good taste in this genre.

very few good metal bands today... never thought i would miss pantera so much. Anyways there are a few really good bands out there that no ones ever listened to because there busy wanking it to david draiman *shudder*
There's some fantastic new bands out there, you just have to sift through the common crap to find them. Don't be so quick to say that there are no more good metal bands, just ask a few people.
i apologize i didn't mean to say that i hate newer metal in fact my favorite band of all time just came out with a new album. BUT i am sick of seeing all the crap also. slipknot, bullet for my valentine, disturbed etc...

Well I'm a fan of Disturbed but I know what you mean. Some of the popular metal bands aren't the greatest. I loved Korn half a decade ago but I really dislike them now and Slipknot was only really good once upon a time. I too dislike Bullet for my Valentine.

Quite aware, though I see where you got that. What I really meant was, for me, Iron Maiden set a sort of golden standard when they came out. In truth, some of the best of rock started in England and became imitated by the rest of the world later.

FUCK BLAST BEATS, They make real drummers look bad.
Real "drummers" call themselves percussionists.

If you really want to get elitist about it, any rock musician pumping out five minute tunes to fill up ten tracks on a CD isn't that great of an artist or that highly talented. They aren't evolving the music genre well past its current standards at all. Those people tend to write musical pieces performed by actual orchestras.

This isn't to say there aren't bands out there that didn't do some real art, such as progressive rock band Yes or Dream Theater. But most musicians are assholes that learned to play in their garage. So any "drummer" isn't really much too talented at all since a real artist would master more than a simple set.

Of course, that's if we're being pretentious about it.

Considering your mention of Powerman 5000 I'm not sure if you'd dig it, but here's some of the aforementioned power metal that I tend to dig (CAUTION: lyrics tend to be cheesy and videos low budget. In the event of a high budget, band may have chosen to just have fun with it and will seem retarded if taken too seriously. Some of it's really cool! But some of it isn't...the important part is to listen to the song):

Blind Guardian [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv-Nn-yNpAQ]
Kamelot [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-TUufvK0gU]
Avantasia [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o26SlmROH5Q]
Hammerfall [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDTmKNl3e6Q]
Edguy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-hG4l2gs-A]
Dungeon [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7s9wWvO7IU]
Vanishing Point [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnnLmgBr_dg]
Firewind [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDO_IaixvKU]
Nocturnal Rites [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5JXJcjtSOQ]
Threshold [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qw1M-e0CeQ]
Mob Rules [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRKu_vBbFns]

Those are some of the sorts of songs that I tend to judge other metal buy. Blind Guardian in particular is my favorite band as they have a huge variety of song types, something most bands in any genre lack these days. They've yet to write a song I disliked since their 1992 album.

If you are tired of super-heavy bass distortion and screaming, those are the bands to give a try.

I'm a metalhead. I listen to pretty much everything in the genere, from groove metal to grindcore. My opinion? It's great when done well, absolutely dreadful when done badly.

Aside from Metal I lsiten to all sorts of music :)

Also, the the guy who said "fuck blast beats", I don't know if you've tried to blast beat properly, (ie not flailing your arms up and down as fast as you can like a spaz) but doing it at the pace which Nile and the Berzerker can do it, or in time like Pete Sandoval, is bloody mental. I understand it's not the most technical of techniques, I understand it's not brilliant when overused, I understand that it sounds dreadful when done badly, however it's not something to utterly write off.

Well, there is some great [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJlTXvKEe84] metal out there. And some [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zvqw6d_KS8Q] that should never have seen the light of day.

First off I realized that after I posted this that I was making a very broad view of "Metal". The stuff I was thinking of when I posted this was crap like Atilla, AtackAtack, and August Burns Red. I actually do listen to bands like Megadeth, I don't particularly like Mettalica though. Secound consider me "Educated" on how much In Flames suck.

I don't really see anything in my original quote that made me sound "pretentious" about the subject, other than the blatant insults to "Thrash" Metal.

1. The only bands I listen two that "pump out five minute tunes" are old bands and usually the music of theirs I listen to is music that has been out for awhile, so no of course it's not evolving anything.

2. Though I would agree with you that most famous drummers now aren't very talented (as you could tell from my first post) but I would really be suprised if you thought Keith Moon, Neil Pert, or Sib Hashian werent "really much too talented". Also unless you've had some experience with playing drums then I don't think your too good a judge on how much talent it takes to master a "simple set". (You could've had much experience regarding drums if so I appologize if not then I don't)

3. Most people that call themselves only percussionists are usually solo drummers, or they are refered to as drums, percussion.

Do you like any of the newer metal bands out there? Or do you just stick to the classics? I too will say that Metallica, Maiden, and Megadeth were incredible as were the '80s hair metal genre, but there's got to be a few bands in the last decade that you listen to...

Anyway for some really good modern metal you should listen to Deathmole! Especially the song "Unicorns Will Kill Your Children".

Everybody has their own opinion. Besides, In Flames has some pretty shitty song to go along with their classic ones. They're pretty bad for that. Srkkl probably listened to one or two of those.

Meh, I wouldn't say that Nightwish are melodic; they're more power metal.

You've always got Children of Bodom, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Black Dahlia Murder; however, none of them sound like Nightwish. While Nightwish are metal, they're more mainstream and have clean lyrics. Most metal bands, like the ones above, utilize a mix of growling and clean vocals (in my opinion, very well).

Anyway, OT: I love metal. Protest the Hero, Between the Buried and Me, The Number 12 Looks Like You, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God... I can't get enough of it.

I've got their first album. It's not bad, but not great either. Every power metal band from the U.S. seems to lack some....well, just SOMETHING.

Well, in Cellador's case it's a decent vocalist. I don't know HOW that guy sounded better on their demo CD than he did after using an actual studio mic.

In any case, I'll give it a listen. I didn't even know they had a second album until one of the songs from it popped up on Pandora.

In terms of melodic death metal, for some reason my mind is always brought to Mercenary [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX3wKFYuwbs], even though I think they really label themselves as melodic black metal or something. I dunno. There are so many sub-genres and half of them sound like banshee-wailing.

Mercenary's 11 Dreams is probably their best album simply because it has a lot less growling and crap than any of their other albums. In fact, I think the singing to growling ratio is actually greater, though they still manage to mix the gutteral noises and screams with singing to make an incredibly distinct sound. Too bad their best song, Redefine Me, is on their fourth album which is...not as good. And thus far I haven't heard a single thing from Architect of Lies to convince me to keep going with the band.

Which is a serious shame, because 11 Dreams is probably one of my favorite albums to listen to, and that doesn't happen often (aside from Blind Guardian, there may only be two or three albums I actually like listening to as a complete package instead of picking and choosing to shove into my "Cool Shit" playlist).

I'm a huge fan of Bodom and In Flames, but I'm reluctant to call either one Melodic (except the two segments from Bodom's Tie My Rope, that's melodic alright). It's weird how different people perceive the same songs differently.

Metal is great because it has so much variety. From ultra slow drone doom to 200 bmp of constant double blasts, from mellow acoustic guitar to low tuned heavy apocalyptic riffage, from simple accords to mind bogglingly complicated, from high pitched voices to deep growls, from fantasy themes to realities of life, from depression and nihilism to positive attitude towards the outside world...

There is at the moment 70 000 bands listed at Metal archives. Keep digging. :)
200 clicks is pretty slow.

I find that I like some music from most genres, but Metal is definitely one of my least enjoyed genres where I have only found a handful of songs I actually liked. Mostly it just sounds like annoying noise to me. Something like 'death metal' I would not listen to even if you paid me, its just painful to hear.

I'd argue that In Flames is melodic, if only for the inclusion of clean vocals and dual guitar parts in some songs. It's all in perception, though; for example, I may see Protest the Hero as progressive metal (leading into metalcore), while somebody else may see them as pure mathcore or hardcore punk (which they were when they released A Calculated Use of Sound).
