Metal is pretty much all I listen to. Like every other genre on earth, there are some bands that are great, and there are some that aren't so great at all. It all depends on the tastes on the listener. I've grown fond of melodic death and gothenburg as of late... I've had a Dark Tranquility CD in my CD player for about a month now and I've been listening to Mercenary from time to time as well.

It's a matter of taste, but in my opinion, metal is awesome!

I like most metal, and while it's true that I detest Nu-metal, I enjoy the genre as a whole. (I.E. All the subgenres, accept Nu-Of course)

I think that the genre has diversified to the point where just saying metal doesn't really get across hat people mean. Personally, I'm a big fan of operatic and epic metal, but I had some of the cruder stuff.

Well...I was a metal fan before until I realised that being a fan only clouds my judgement...the only metal bands that have good music, lyrics and some meaning to listen to their song are actually the first ones...you know like Iron Maiden,Hammerfall and others...I am not saying that the other ones suck they kinda have the same sound and stuff like that and is just meaningless to listen to the same music and identical lyrics...the only thing I hated about the metal genre was that it had like hundreds of little genres...for god sake there is ghost metal, softcore metal and other crazy stuff like that but they all resemble the original ones like heavy, death, black, trash :)

I'm a big fan of metal, though not as much as I was a year ago or so. I probably listen to hip-hop more than metal these days, but I'm very much a 'listen to anything' kinda guy.

There's nothing too heavy, brutal or droney for me. I loves me some Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Nile, Napalm Death, Chthonic, Emperor, Swallow the Sun, Mayhem, Sunn O))), Electric Wizard, Earth, Boris etc. etc.; I don't find thrash very interesting to listen to, and ultimo-cheese like Dragonforce just makes me laugh these days, though the occasional dose of power metal is good for your heart though.

I do love brutal vocals too. It's not so much about what they're saying to me, more the atmosphere it evokes. It's another instrument in my mind.

That said, the genre has LOTS of rubbish. Cannibal Corpse for instance, while being technically proficient, are just boring to me. There are some mega talents in metal, but like all music, there's far more people who wish they were.

A lot of people here like it. I like it, too. I like it because I like every single kind of music EVER. I like industrial metal and party metal, as Rob Zombie and Andrew W.K. are my heroes.
Andrew W.K. - greatest philosopher of the modern world.

OT: It's like basically any other genre, it has great stuff, average stuff, crap stuff. Metal is mainly the type of music I have, but I'll listen to other genres. I give everything a listen at least once before I pass judgement.

While I mainly have metal in my music library, I also bands like Pendulum, The Prodigy, and older bands like Queen and Pink Floyd.

I'll listen to metal, but it wouldn't necessarily be my favourite genre. I like metal bands like KoRn and Slipknot (I know, I know, I should be ashamed and all that), but rock would be my preferred genre. Bands that blur the lines between rock and metal tend to be well-received by me, though.
Basically this, yeah, yeah, yeah, I like Slipknot and nu-metal, I have no idea what metal is whatsoever. Anyway, I pretty much like thrash metal as well.
I'm kind of surprised that there's such elitism in the metal-listening community. Metal is a genre held in contempt by a lot of people, so you'd be best off keeping your head down and not making such sweeping statements.

I like Tool and Metallica.

That is why subgenres are necessary. If someone had never heard of Tool or Metallica they would assume that both of them play roughly the same kind of music.

Metal is great because it has so much variety. From ultra slow drone doom to 200 bmp of constant double blasts, from mellow acoustic guitar to low tuned heavy apocalyptic riffage, from simple accords to mind bogglingly complicated, from high pitched voices to deep growls, from fantasy themes to realities of life, from depression and nihilism to positive attitude towards the outside world...

There is at the moment 70 000 bands listed at Metal archives. Keep digging. :)

This is pretty much why i like metal, there is a tremendous amount of it and a lot of variety within the genre, once you get to know it.

I pretty much skipped this whole thread, which is likely what most everyone else has done.

I tend to enjoy power metal from Europe simply because I like the energy and the catchy melodies. Bands like Blind Guardian, Nocturnal Rites, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, they all provide me what I enjoy best in music.

I can't stand metal in America because it has ditched what made it great. In the 70's and 80's, there was a lot of focus on energy and melody, and bands wrote about interesting topics. Megadeth was very political, Metallica had songs based on H.P. Lovecraft, Iron Maiden was nothing BUT geek topics, Anthrax wrote about being in a nut house, etc. Somewhere along the lines everyone started singing about what everyone else sung about: high school. Only now it was all "oh woe is me!". They tend to scream and growl, there is a complete absence to the sound as if something is missing, and the energy is gone.

The unfortunate side of power metal is that, despite the potential to expand, most bands have this focus on "BE METAL!", and while I love to have fun, throw the horns and say "FUCK YEAH METAL!", it also pulls the genres down. I can only imagine what would happen if these metal bands decided to listen to classic rock like Yes, Kansas, Foreigner, Foghat, Boston and Chicago and pulled their own styles. Hell, even Disney songs done in a power metal style [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj2QR0XuoLQ] create a new kind of sound.

Aside from bands like Yes and Kansas and Styx, though, I can't get into much non-power metal bands. I dunno why, but even if it's some kind of dance-club-tune that I enjoy I find myself thinking "Man, this would be really bad ass with some guitars..."
