Your opinion of metal...

I think metal's reputation is downgraded by the W****rs who just spam guitar and drums violently to create noise, then retail it for a tenner.

Real metal is more like Rage Against the Machine and Tenacious D (soft metal), to Metallica (Metal, Metal) and Lamb of God (for hardcore fans). Anything above that and then your back in the "just noise" region.

Classic metal is amazing. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. The current status of "metal" is RAWRARAWRAWRRRARRR!!!!! and then speedpicking the guitar for half an hour. It's terrible compared to the classics.

Metal fans, "arrogant and elitist"? Some of them, maybe, but mostly that's Hip-Hop's shtick.

Water under the bridge, man. I had the same outlook on metal until one of my friends (a metalhead, as it were) turned me onto several metal bands and tried out my tastes. I found out that while I do like the occasional Swedish melodic death metal song, I'm a sucker for progressive and speed metal. It all depends on what you want out of the music.

I love Speed myself, but I don't know many bands in that genre, unfortunately. In Prog, my favorite band is probably Dream Theater.

I don't know too much Progressive metal. Can you recommend me a couple of good bands so I can get a taste of the sound?

Hmm. Dream Theater, of course. Symphony X isn't bad, and Evergrey is pretty damn good, though I'm pretty new to them myself.

What do you need that shield for? Most of the people on this thread agree with you on the rap thing and almost everybody on this site would agree with you on the Uwe Boll thing.

There is at the moment 70 000 bands listed at Metal archives. Keep digging.

That's it? I expected a lot more than that. Almost everybody who starts up a band in their garage these days play metal.

Stuff with melody - I don't care how fast you can play the whole tone scale, it doesn't song that good (I'm looking at you The Faceless).

I can't stand metal in America because it has ditched what made it great. In the 70's and 80's, there was a lot of focus on energy and melody, and bands wrote about interesting topics... Iron Maiden was nothing BUT geek topics

I'm into some bands in and around the metal genre: Metallica, Megadeth, Meshuggah, Tool, Opeth, Helmet, Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, Melvins, Botch, Deftones, etc. I'm sick of hearing people argue about what is/isn't metal, or claiming that metal is the only worthwhile type of music. I'd like to think my musical tastes are pretty varied; I'm also into classic rock, alternative, indie rock, hip-hop (mostly early 90's stuff, and recent things like Handsome Boy Modeling School), and lately I've been getting into jazz.

There's some fantastic new bands out there, you just have to sift through the common crap to find them. Don't be so quick to say that there are no more good metal bands, just ask a few people.
