In case you don't know, Ryse is the Roman gladiator game that was shown as an XBOX One exclusive at E3. What did you think of it? I think it's the epitome of what's wrong with the industry:

Style over substance (Not surprising, as it's made by Crytek)
QTEs
Dumbed down
More of an interactive movie than a game
Generic

I really wanted to like it (it's Crytek, and I'm a bit of an antiquity nut) but it just looks kind of crap.

The squad based elements look contrived, there are rampant historical inaccuracies in the trailer alone, and it generally doesn't look like it's come along from Spartan Total Warrior, except in the graphics department.

so i came here thinking we were talking about ryse as in the champ from LoL. :(

so the game. i didn't like it. it was really stupid. apart from the historical faults the game is a god of war wannabe that totally fails. its generic as the OP said. the QTEs make the game give you the feeling that the kills are not yours. yeah the QTEs for nice executions is good if not overused (see darksiders 2)

Dumbed down
how did you get to that conclusion only by watching the trailer?

Dumbed down
Compared to what?

There's nothing for it to be "dumbed down" in reference to, so I'm going to assume that this is just another in a long line of threads you're making as if The Escapist is your personal blog, and you're trying to get hits by throwing in buzzwords. And really, at least four of those five points are slightly-differently-worded ways of saying the same thing in this context.

OT: I'm reserving judgement until I know more about the product. Which appears to be something of a novelty for "gamers" these days. But as it's currently supposed to be exclusive to the Xbox One, my interest is rather low, as I don't plan on getting an Xbox One until at least a few years after launch.

I think its far to early to tell. If I judged the game by only that trailer, yes youre right. It looks like its basicly a QTE movie. However I would also be a fool if I judged an entire game solely on such a short showcase of what it is. The trailer does not make it look very good but neither did Alpha Protocols trailer and I love that game. The old saying "dont judge a book by its cover" seems to apply

I dont think I would call it generic though. If it were tolkienesque fantasy then I would agree but these are romans. I dont know if the game intends on getting into Roman mythology, if its going to be historic, or if were going to see something like God of war was (a greek tragedy) only set for the Romans. That said, I dont feel romans are generic at this time but that may change in the future.

What's it dumbed down to exactly? The only other comparable game is GOW, which is also a QTE clusterfuck.

This isn't your blog page, you usually have to explain yourself here if your going to make wild accusations.

You can put another tally down on game we both agree on.

I don't like most realistic war games, present or past. I'm not a fan of cinematic games either, I like having more player control where I'm actually doing something, not triggering a script to see the computer do more stuff.

Add another tally to the people who agree with this succinct yet apt statement.

Pretty Much This.

I want to play a game. I don't want to trigger a script that has already been set in stone. I mean really, what sort of input do you have in a game like this anyway? It's a collection of set pieces that want to involve the player as little as possible. Pass.

All I've seen of the game has been a single promotional trailer that showed a Roman army and a bunch of QTEs. What impression is there to give? I wasn't entirely impressed?

I applaud the fact that it (presumably) showed actual gameplay, regardless of that gameplay being entirely prerendered and heavily scripted anyway. If I were to come away with any sort of hard opinion, it's that it intrigued me about as much as most of the other games present at E3; Which is to say, not all that greatly.

Ryse looked terrible, beyond terrible. A bland, scripted, QTE infested, shiny game that was wheeled out to show how pretty games are on the Xbox One.

Yeah...my opinions are about as low as it can get really.

I don't know why people are complaining about the QTEs. Okay yeah I do, but look closer. Essentially the combat looks like it's lifted out of the Arkham games, just instead of watching a cool finisher, they added a couple button prompts instead. That doesn't mean that the combat is entirely QTEs, the combat is probably still good if you liked it in Arkham Aslyum/City, Captain America, Amazing Spider-man, and Sleeping Dogs.

That said I don't think that style of combat is really suited for this type of genre. I mean Batman and Spider-man are agile fighters who dodge and misdirect more than they fight head on and it's more suited to that style, so using that combat system here lacks the weight that you'd think fighting with a sword a shield should have.

I loved how the E3 trailer was almost a shot by shot copy of the normandy scene from Saving Private Ryan, I've never laughed so hard.

Well, it's apparently a game made entirely out of quick time events. And I hate quick time events. And there's nothing else about it that looks noteworthy or seems interesting.

So pretty awful all around, from the looks of it.

My first impression of it. "Ohh hey, a new game...which has ancient greek theme...yay...". Not a terrible fan of ancient greek as you might expect, think it's...a bit overused in the media, I would appreciate other major points in history being used as the setting for video games.

Uhh what? Ohh yeah, the game! Ehh...gears of war except with swords and looks terribly scripted with...nothing going for it? That's my take on it atleast.
