I bet this has been done before, so no need to unleash the MOTHERFUCKING FURY of capslock unto my face.

Well, this thread has come to my brain after a day spent in Battlegrounds on WoW. I'm on my midlevel (48) mage in Arathi Basin, and I find that a lot of the time a crapload of the flags get capped by the horde (or Alliance, depending on your faction, but for me it's horde) and then we get stuck at that stupid chapel spawn being humped to death until one of the enemies decides to do the legwork and cap the last flag.

If you have never played WoW, here's an alternate version:

Every match on Rust in MW2. Ever. (Although on Rust it's OK to spawncamp because the sooner everyone's out of that damn map the better)

So, educated lads and gals of the Escapist, what's your opinion on spawncamping?

TOO LATE, THE MOTHERFUCKING FURY HAS BEEN RELEASED!

*cough*

OT: It's a cheap tactic, but mostly the games fault for making it possible. In my opinion, that is.

OP: I do hate it so, it's just totally against the whole thing of games being fun for everyone, not just this little group of griefers ruining everything.

Ban em all, I say!
But in gamemodes in CoD like Domination, your team is guaranteed to lose if you don't cap two of the flags, so you're basically forced to trap them in their spawn.

I hate it. It is cheap. They have no time to defend themselves or get orientated.
It's fine if it is just one kill, if a guy spawns in front of you while you are moving through the area to somewhere else, but sitting in a spawn point is cheap.

My opinion comes entirely from Call of Duty, so it may or may not apply to other games.

If your bad enough to sit in your spawn and let the trap happen, then you deserve to be spawn camped. I'm not saying it's a fair tactic, and I know how frustrating it is when it happens. However, being spawn trapped is entirely your team's fault. If you continually push and move immediately after spawning, you can usually prevent the other team from setting up the trap, even in Domination.

It's a cheap move to win the game. I know what you mean about the Arathi Basin spawn camping, it also happens in Alterac Valley except with Graveyards.

Depends on the game.
In games like Team Fortress 2, it can be easily countered and you often have to push an enemy right back to their spawn to win anyway. So there's no problem.
In games like Half Life 2: Deathmatch, it's completely unsportsmanlike. Because the guy who just spawned has absolutely no control over the situation.

It's cheap, every server in my favourites list has a kick or ban policy against spawn campers.

It's not even that it's a low, underhand method winning (it is). It's that it is the fastest to empty a server possible, when people leave because of that kind of thing or feel they were forced to leave a server or have no fun, they don't come back. It's destructive to server communities so it shouldn't be done...

I agree, TF2 has been done very well to avoid spawncamping with ubers and the like.
I never played HL2:DM much so I don't have much knowhow on the matter (it's very frustrating being killed repeatedly with a toilet grav-gunned to the face by seasoned veterans of the game when you're just starting out).

There's nothing wrong with spawn camping.

There's a lot wrong with games where spawn camping is an unbeatable tactic, there's a lot wrong with players who can only win by spawn camping, and there's a lot wrong with players who simply suck too much at the game to overcome spawn camping. But there is nothing wrong with spawn camping itself.

I wish I could give civil and well constructed argument against spawn camping; one composed of three small arguments as to why I believe it is unsportsmanlike. But since I don't have the time to do so, I'll break it down to four words:

I think it bites.

You managed to state your answer but you have to show your working too.

I think games are for the sake of making the other person feel humiliated, not simply pissed off.
