So many good ones, but I think most have been osted already.
Civ IVs is amazing, as is Borderlands, but Ive already been neaten to those. I also loved MOdern warfare's opening cutsecene, driving through middleeastistan in the car, and also Gears of War 2, with everybody just fighting that huge battle. I thought that was just fun.
Overall, OP got it nailed. Borderlands is best.
OFF TOPIC: Does anybody else see this RIft advertisement at the bottom of the page? The one that is just a red crystal and a boob?
OK maybe not an opening that 'blew me away'. But this one i did find to be something that really has grown on me over the years. Hell, the whole game has grown over me and taken my soul.
But this opening. It shows that Link is his own god in these 3 days. He knows them so well. He know exactly what everyone will be doing and all time during the day.
Knowing that at the end, he is just going to play the Ocarina of time and go back to the first day.
I think deeper into this game then was inteded

Funny, I was just about to satisfy you:
There can be only one, and this is it. I imagine that a lot of you kids these days have never actually seen this before. You're welcome.
Well actually, there was an even better version of this video, with a lot of different scenes from the game, but it was used as a preview for the game, not in the game itself where the opening was more restrained, so it doesn't actually count for this thread. Here it is anyway:
The DMC 3 opening is of my favorite gaming moments, especially since it pretty seamlessly kicks you into gameplay in the same room, but someone said that already...
How about the Persona 4 opening? It was really catchy, well animated, and introduced all of the important characters and themes.
Honorable mention to this video of Metal Wolf Chaos, because it's not really the opening sequence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Genl242_ZU8
...This is...the most moving, and heartfelt intro of a video game, that I have ever experienced in my life. I cried when it was over. It was just...it...I can't put it into words..
To quote the Angry Video Game Nerd, I had the same feeling as him, where "the fog keeps rolling in until it seems to be creeping into the room itself."
It actually has that haunting, chilling atmosphere.
If we're talking about opening cinematics I'd have to say WoW: Wrath of the Lich King and Final Fantasy IX. Gameplay wise, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars and Morrowind get my vote. I just can't get those opening monologues out of my head. "As I picked myself up all I could hear was the ceaseless drone of traffic. Life went on around me but the explosion was to change my life forever" and "Stand up, there you go. You were dreaming. What's your name" for me marked beginning of grand adventures, although I didn't know it at the time.
A Videogame opening must set the general mood for the game itself to be good, It could have an Iconic song or Some Foreshadowing or something, What is your Personal Best Videogame Opening?
Mine is here.
Because it just generally sets the games mood and what story there is (NONE), Its also a fun little game, And the song is AWESOME TOO.
I really don't get the mentions of Mass Effect 2. The emotional impact of Shepard dying is completely negated by the resurrection that happens instantly afterwards. The death isn't allowed to linger and give you time to wonder what might happen, it merely seems to have been done for shock value and provide and explosive intro.
Imagine how much more it would have worked at the end of Mass Effect, where the gap between games provides ample time to absorb the ramifications of the death and speculate on what could happen next. It gives a whopper of a cliffhanger, a way of enticing you into purchasing the second game and also gives an early preview of one of the major players of the second game (The Illusive Man), further fuelling intrigue and speculation.
So yeah, I think it's a great piece of story but it works as an epilogue to the first game rather than the beginning to the second.
edit: My personal best is definitely Borderlands. It is absolutely pitch perfect in it's use of music, humour and how it sets up and entices you into the game. I've never seen any other piece of video gaming that has quite the same slick feeling that the Borderlands opening does. It really is masterfully created, I couldn't express enough just how amazing I think it is (HELL YEAH GUSHING PRAISE).
