MvC3 and SSB Melee both had awesome intros, showcasing the crossovers. Dante vs. Deadpool and Mario vs. Pikachu will just never ever get old :)

"Well, the animation budget's increased, at least."

It has to be "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". This game doesn't screw around, and it makes you its ***** from the get-go...good times.

Assassin's Creed 2, it's nothing particularly amazing, but it gives a background to the characters and the setting of the game.
And the bit when you get to the top of the tower and the world pans out and looks epic.

Tough choice.

Bioshock
Mass Effect 2
Halo 3: ODST

Diablo 2 was also the first time i saw then-jaw-dropping cinematics and i replayed that movie dozens off times.

It's hard to pick between Fable 2, what with the epic slow motion bird droppings falling or The 7th Guest's cinematic.

Are we talking cinematic or opening gameplay?
I personally don't think it matters. Bioshock's cinematic opening was practically non-existent, but I consider the "opening" to last at least as long as it takes to get to the city. I'd even argue to the point of getting the pistol because it's still an interactive cutscene by that point, but a much more fair line to draw would be when you get your first plasmid.

In terms of cinematic presentation though, Bioshock has nothing on Final Fantasy 9 or Full Throttle. The thing is none of those intros are interactive, but they only set up the story. They do nothing for the mood of the game. It's apples and oranges, and thus why both should count. As long as we aren't extending the intros through the tutorial, I think we will be fine.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaawwww FF9, B E A Uuuuuuutiful. I remember first playing that and being like, "Whys this pig nosed prick attacking me for no reason? Still these painted backgrounds are nice." but would you consider the intro on that to be up to the bomb explosion? Thats were it took off from for me? Also Steiner, genius character.

I'm going to cheat here and name a few of my favorites, but that's because I can't make up my mind.

Maybe it's because I'm a history nerd, but Civilization V's intro actually moved me to tears the first time I saw it:

Regardless of how you feel about World of Warcraft, you gotta admit Blizzard has this cutscene business down cold:

For nostalgia's sake (yeah it's the old DOS version, but that's what I grew up with!):

Of course, there's nothing wrong with a little camp now and then. With that in mind...
