While my favourite opening goes to Bioshock, I'd like to present a few other ones that haven't been mentioned much (or at all)

I liked:
Gears of War 2 'Prescott speech' opening.
All Assassin's Creed openings.
Left 4 Dead 2 opening.
The Darkness opening tunnel sequence and the church sequence where Jackie first unleashes The Darkness on Paulie's goons.
GTA IV's opening with Niko on the platypus.
Both Bioshock 1 and 2 were very good at setting the mood for the rest of the game.
Prototype was just fun to watch over and over again.

Hands down my vote has to go to Dawn of War on PC. My friends and I all picked our faces up off the floor after we watched that one, then re-watched it, then re-re-watched it, The back and forth clashing of the forces, jockeying for an upper hand. The heightening of hope as the Space Marines make their big push with supporting firepower, the devastation as they lose that support and are scattered. And you get such an emotional rush watching the courage and unyielding spirit of one last Marine and he drags himself, bloody and broken, through incoming fire to plant that banner on his objective. *shivers* AWESOME!

A tough choice, but I'll have to go with Rise of Legends.
It is just so... well, see for yourselves
I just love that game intro/opening/whatever...
Wow, that's awesome. I love how it segues into the Rise of Nations music at the end.

Makes me want to give this one a try...

1991 Another World

I dont understand what people mean about Bioshock's beginning its a protracted cutscene with psuedo tutorial elements. Bioshocks mid game cutscenes are awesome. Beginning meh.

A Videogame opening must set the general mood for the game itself to be good, It could have an Iconic song or Some Foreshadowing or something, What is your Personal Best Videogame Opening?

Either Red Alert 3, because it's theme is fucking gold, or Jak 2, because I can say all the dialog in it, word for word.

Titanic Adventure out of Time had an very good opening.

you start off in this dingy apartment as a complete and worthless loser and the more you look around your room in '41 london you see that you are a failure and that because of the titanic you are a washed up secret agent who cant pay the rent. Meanwhile the radio is repoting that the world is going to hell.

and thus begins the epic adventure of not fucking up

My personal favourite would have to be Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep intros.

I think that the music used really fits the scenes and that it seems mesmerising to me seeing everything happening in the intro along with the music.

Toss up between Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption

as much as some other games might have nostalgia factors, or some other memories attached to them, Mass Effect is incredibly epic with an amazing score right off the bat- set's the tone for what's going to come. Explains in the opening text how the greatest achievements in mankind's history, traveling between the stars and dark energy manipulation- is just commonplace technology to the other species of the galaxy, where it's just known as 'mass effect' and lays out the vastness of the galaxy by using the Sol System as a beginning point to a large gateway to something much bigger than humanity can imagine. But it doesn't take up any of your time methodically explaining this all to you- it's visuals, artwork and the way the characters interact fill in the gaps- along with the codex, if you chose to read it.

And Red Dead Redemption is probably the most cinematic (in it's gameplay and presentation) game that I have ever played. Begins with the theme of the Old Ways dying out, with Ross and Archer leading Marston to the train, to to the train ride, with Marston listening to the other passengers talk about the West in ways that are so foreign to him, so detached and pompous- with the women behind him talking about the savagery of the natives, giving the natives the gift of heaven (that they should be grateful for) and how only those of a certain 'breed' are really meant for wealth and power. At the same time, the priest and the girl Jenny talk about how the purpose of moving to the west is to stake out your claim in the untamed land and bring peace and a calm place to be allowed to worship and live in, without interference- completely unaware of the irony of his statements when talking about the natives.

These are themes that are literally prevalent throughout the entirety of both games, and their openings help to firmly establish a tone to the rest of the game's story. They both blew me away, and impressed me how they continued to work with these themes and subjects in quite a mature manner.

Gears of War 2's opening. As terrible as the story was, the chairman's speech was pretty damn epic.
That is because it is little more than a standard Saint Crispen's Day speech. The formula laid down in Shakespeare's Henry V is fantastic and with just a bit of tweaking (generally just updating the language) it still works today.

I always have trouble picking a single favourite, and many I would've picked have been mentioned already. A sincere thank you to those who posted the vids for Soul Reaver, Dawn of War, Homeworld and the MechWarrior games!

I'm going to add the Darksiders intro scene as a more recent favourite. The Apocalyptic Endwar kicks off, demons and angels both crashing from the sky and crawling out of the ground to slash, tear and blow each other to pieces with us mere mortals completely caught off guard and crushed wholesale underfoot, not even spared a glance by the clashing otherworldy powers.

And then you, Horseman of the Apocalypse War, turn up to put these unruly mobs back in their place, the only way you know how. All in a day's work of course.

I'm sorry, but you asked for it :)

That was the first thing that came to mind for me as well. Never before or since has such a terrible translation had such an impact on internet culture.
