Pokemon mystery dungeon: explorers of time/darkness/sky

It's gameplay isn't impressive, standard dungeon crawler with a Pokemon twist. But there is one thing that stands perfect, it's story out matches a lot of games. And that is saying something.

On top of that is one of the best final boss battle songs to date:

I am not joking.

And to top it all off, an ending that is completely unforgettable.

I second this, plus you got to give credit to a pokemon game where the villain tries to dive you to suicide, I'm serious that's a thing that happens.IN A POKEMON GAME!

Gah, so many!
Persona 4 was mentioned, but I don't think it belongs here. It is anything but underrated, as almost any RPG fan on this site *me included* has a raging hard on for the persona series.
What I will include though is the other parts of the Shin Megami Tensei series. People think that Persona 4 was difficult, I just laugh in their face. Some parts of the original Shin Megami Tensei line have brought me to tears.

Another one would be Corpse Party, though it gained a little attention from some LPers, it still doesn't have nearly as many fans as it should have.

When i saw the name of this thread I immediately thought of KOA:R. so satisfying to see OP agree. (although shocking faeblades blow those frisbees out of the water)
I raged endlessly at the end of the year when KOA:R couldnt even get on best _RPG_ lists. Its like this game has been completely forgotten already.

I'm gonna post a few games here, some new and some old. The first game that comes to my mind when I think underrated game is The Guardian Legend for NES. It's a hybrid of zelda like adventure and frantic space shooter. There really isn't much like it out there. Another oldie is Illusion of Gaia for SNES. Part of the soul blazer trilogy, it's the first one that I've played and second overall (dang Terranigma not getting a USA release). Wonderful game that I'll always think highly of. The newest game I'll add to the list is Growlanser: wayfarer of time. It's a PSP game that came out last summer. It's a remake of a JP only title that still looks rather dated, but that's beside the point. The story is good and so is the strategy of battle. Sure it can be broken with grinding and such, but I still enjoyed the game. There are some more games that come to mind (like Legend of Dragoon and SMT series) but they've already been discussed. Also, Namco's tales series of rpgs. Played all of them that came out in the USA and they are all pretty good.

Bioshock 2. The heavy focus on the father-daughter element of the story was, I think, extremely engaging and both endings made me shiver and tear up. It also had several awe-inspiring moments of game design brilliance that I will never forget, like when part of Rapture floods while you are still trying to move forward, or this bloody sequence:
Of course, everyone hated this game, because... I have no fucking clue.

Sanzaru Games has always been a part of the Sly trilogy, however, so I'm not worried about them developing Sly 4.
What do you mean?
Okay my bad, perhaps not always. But Sanzaru Games is the one that put the Sly Collection together. :x I've seen several screens and a couple vids of Sly 4 and it looks really good.

Mine would probably have to be Dark Messiah Might and Magic... it reviewed ok and has a small but dedicated following of fans but its a game I cannot recommend highly enough.
Tell me, is the PC version somehow radically different? Back in the day I picked it from the bargain bin for Xbox 360 and paid 30 euros for it, and found out that I absolutely hated the game for it was so incredibly mediocre and bland. I still regret the purchase; I feel embarrassed for being cheated into buying that trash.

Then later on I found out that some people actually like the game, but they all always said that you should play it on the PC with lots of mods.

I don't know if these are considered underrated here, but I'll go with two games. First is from my childhood. Loved this game.

Next is when I was slightly older. This is one of the first truly "dark" games I played and I credit it for being one of the first games to get me hooked on how important atmosphere was for me in a videogame.

Yeah but I think that was just a port, this time they're actually creating a new game.

I was excited as well, but then I realised that Sly 3 was meant to be the final game in the franchise.

Metro 2033
Great atmosphere, genuinely scary at point, great characters, fantastic game mechanics, "realistic" stealth the whole thing was so damn beautiful.

It was slick and marvellously well done and I can't believe it slipped under so many radars. I can't wait for Metro: Last Light.

I know it was. Sly 3 wrapped everything up real nice-like and it didn't need a sequel at all. But I can't personally complain about more Sly Cooper. :x

Shadow of Rome.

Suffered from the same fate that Godhand did (both Capcom titles and both fairly close to each other in birth). I just don't understand why it got so little love. It pushed PS2 graphics to near current gen levels, had glorious sound, played smooth and responsive (and if you knew the Onimusha engine, you could jump right in), and most importantly had some of the most magnificent video game violence you could ever ask for with no two fights ever playing out the same. Very replayable as well since you could replay the best parts of the game as you wished. Even the few people I knew who gave it a chance said it was a blast, but again, so few gave it that chance. *SIGH* Which pretty much means I'll never see a sequel...
I feel your pain friend, I borrowed that game from a friend once and didn't really get very far, but I had a hell of a time with it, I do remember thinking "Agrippa" didn't sound like a very roman name, which is weird because most of what else I remember was being completely blown away by the whole gladiator thing (I really like the roman gladiator thing and think there should be more games about it)

but sadly it's not the game I was going to put on this list

mine is Shenmue, as anyone who's seen a post of mine in a similar thread will know, I just really loved that game, and to this day I'm holding out hope for Shenmue 3, hoping against hope, and annoyingly I recently heard Sega planned for a Shenmue HD collection, and it was already complete, then I found out they've been sitting on it for about 2 years and not seen fit to release it, imagine my fanboy-headache

Sorry it didn't meet your realism quota MR. Smartass. I will try to do better next time.

Your avatar gives you away BTW. King is naked my friend. Sooner we speak it out, the better.
What the hell?

Well I am not sure why you responded that way, I was just saying than hopping than a new, stand alone game would get more reconision than *THE* most know character in the whole world of videogames is a little... exaggerated.

FYI I am not into mario games that much lately anyways. Hell, if I think about it, I was NEVER really that into the mario games, but rather the "secondary" mario games so to speak (As in Mario Kart, Mario Party, the Mario RPGS too...).

Mario is my avatar simply because its one of the default avatars and I am too lazy to change it. But I dont hate him either, its just there... lol.

Also I dont know what Mario has to do with realism? Those two concepts dont go togheter AT ALL.

Persona 4, Ico, and Flower come to my mind. Flower more so as I've never felt such euphoria pouring out of a game in my whole time on this earth.

I'd also say Cave Story, but you guys seem to be talking about triple-A level games. It's a shame, because Cave Story is the best damned indie game I've played. I want a sequel...

I'm gonna go ahead and say God Hand, even though as of late I've seen a few Escapists highly commending the game. Just one of those games that's popular to mourn for, I guess.
I've actually watched an LP of the game. Looks fun.

Plus anything with a poisonous chihuahua in it has to be good right?

OT: Hmm...

Possibly Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.

Between the vast amounts of powerful and creative weapons, the large enemy variety, the humorous and fun characters, and the decently large amount of levels there are, this game is freaking awesome.

Sadly, this game didn't get very much attention at all. Of course from what I've heard, it was released around the same time as the first Prince of Persia for the PS2. So I imagined that didn't help.

Regardless, if you have an XBOX 360, go the the XBOX original hits and download this game. DO IT NOW!
Took the words right out of my mouth. I wound up buying, trading in accidentally, renting, and re buying this game like 3 times before i finally got to the penultimate boss fight, which I could never beat. Before then though, I loved every goddamn minute of the game. It was fun AND challenging when you shot a guy in the arm, but didn't take it off, so it started swerving all over the place in no particular direction, shooting wildly. Even when it happened to me.

Too bad that their acquisition by blizzard, and blizzard's subsequent abandonment of everything besides WOW, starcraft core games, and diablo, has made it so that we pretty much never will see the rest of the trilogy that was planned.

EDF 2017/Insect Armageddon. Game is hilarious and extremely fun to play with a friend. I have sunk so many hours into those games.

Did Sucker Punch comment on Sly 4? I wanna know what they think about it.
