Assassins Creed was supposedly inspired somewhat by a book called Alamut in which that same phrase is used. Dostoevsky played around with similar themes, amongst others. Just to lend it a little more creditability and maybe thought you'd find it interesting. It feels kind of silly getting it from a videogame, but honestly, it's the closest I've ever gotten to a universal philosophy.
