I guess and explanation is deserved for a couple of them. I tried to keep it down to one game for franchise, because, if I didn't, you'd pretty much see a lot more Sam and Max and a hell of a lot more of Mario.
I guess I have this obsession where the art is a commentary on its own medium, and with how far and bold Spec Ops: The Line went, it really is something that I feel is going to stick with me for a long time.
Cave Story is just AWESOME though. That, and the two Arkham games, are the perfect embodiment of what a good game needs to have. Sure, there are a lot of games that accomplish what it needs to without having what Cave Story and the Batman games had, but with what the AAA industry has been trying to do, these games are here to really show them a thing or two on how to do it. They have engaging gameplay with a story, while maybe not exactly great, that is told in an enthralling way, mostly to do with how it is paced. It's just weird with so many games trying to accomplish it and they just don't seem to get it.
And, Super Mario Bros 3. There were a lot of Mario games I really wanted to put on the list, but this one is really going to have to take the spot. It's not necessarily my favorite Mario game, but having the game pretty recent in my mind, it's hard to escape that pure visceral joy of the gaming experience that it provides. It's a very simple game, yet, it's also incredibly complex. It has just one mechanic and pretty much does everything it can to build on it.
It's just fucking good!
