I think I would have to forge a zombie-banhammer. Blunt trauma to the dome is what is needed. Swords have to be constantly sharpened to be effective. With blunt weapons, you just have to keep swinging.

People, you forget that although blade weapon like the Katana is cool and deadly against zombie but you must remember that blood will get on it. The more blood on it, the more blunt it will get. Sure you can clean it with a cloth or pour liquid on it but would you have time to clean it against a horde? Well ok, even it had been cover in blood to the point it's too blunt to cut it maybe be handy as a metal stick?
As for my melee weapon, does a shild (police riot shield) count? A good defence is a good offence.

my first thoughts where katana or lightsaber, but i see some problems with those. a katana can get stuck in a zombie, and even if its just for a second, thats all it takes for another zombie to get you. i'd have to nicks the lightsaber, because im not a jedi. iv done a lot of stick twirling in my day, and i can guarantee i would hurt myself or a friend. not to mention that a weapon whos blade is weightless would take a long time to train with.

personally i would play to the zombie's weakness. assuming theyre not DnD zombies (with DR5/slashing) i would use a bat. one hit to the jaw and they are harmless. one hit to the leg and they cant persue you (very fast). its more about your speed and conditioning, but i wont get off topic. essentially zombies have all of our flaws, and none of our ability to heal damage. You dont have to eviscerate them, you just have to keep them at bay and do whatever damage you can.

Realistcally, a trench spike or a lightweight crowbar since the latter has other uses beyond killing things. Fictionally, a Doom 3 beserk helmet. make my fists WMDs.

A crowbar; it's large enough to swing w/o getting tired easily, clawed at both ends, and can also function as a tool.

Added psychological benefit if you can trick yourself in thinking you're Gordon Freeman.

yes it counts but why do you want to use a riot shield?

I think it's about the right size? Since it big enough to shield me from a zombie but it's small enough for me to slam it into a Zombie face for a offence attack.
