I left Lydia at home when I was doing the Dark Brotherhood quests because I didn't want her to know that about me. She's just too innocent. It'll be the same for the Thieves quests. But since I still take Lydia out more often than not, I moved Ysolda to my house in Riften where she wouldn't be lonely, because I don't even bother with that housecarl, whose name I don't even remember.
I also grab any book I think I might not have, but I haven't yet put them on shelves. I haven't bought a place with enough bookshelves yet. I'm contemplating buying up all the spellbooks again and making an entire bookshelf of just spellbooks.
And clothes, of course. Again, if I'm not sure I have it, I'll grab it. Though that hardly matters because my Nord female has the build of a 14 year old boy, so nothing is really flattering (some exceptions are: Miner's clothes, Jester's outfit, and the Dark Brotherhood outfit). I did a quest where there was a female chef, and her outfit looked cool, so I killed her to take it, and it looked stupid on me, so I loaded a previous save and left her alive.
Because that's my other quirk: I won't kill or steal from anyone unless I'm explicitly told to.
