So, we only have a few more hours remaining of 2011, and I'm sure everyone is getting ready to get drunk, see in 2012 and try and remember the lyrics to For Auld Lang Syne.

It's been a rather tempestuous year, what with the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the subsequent disaster at Fukushima, the eurozone coming close to collapse, the Occupy Wall Street movement going global, and the Arab Spring toppling dictators left, right and centre, to name but a few events.

So, I've been thinking, Escapists. What song describes 2011 better than any other to you? For me, I'd say it's Take A Bow by Muse:

In a year where Hosni Mubarak, Colonel Gaddafi, and Kim Jong-Il have all been removed from power by popular uprising, civil war or merely the cold touch of the Grim Reaper, it seems appropriate to have a song that charts the rise and fall of a despot: starting with "Cast a spell on the country you love" and moving to "You will beg for their lives and their souls".

Take A Bow DOES seem very fitting.

While this perhaps would have been more fitting in 2010 (that was the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, right?), it's still also appropriately depressing for this year if you pay attention to the lyrics.

(also, that guitar opening is sooooo brilliant)

Probably The Wilhelm Scream by James Blake.

To be honest, it hasn't been a truly exceptional year for music, but James Blake is a pretty good new artist, even if his music is a little Marmitey (love it or hate it) in places.

Er, I think you've misunderstood the thread a bit.

Yeah, I kinda realised that after I posted.

Thanks for telling me though.

No contest, nowhere to run... nowhere left, only one... this is it, this is the countdown to extinction...

2011 was a year of major engineered upheaval. This seems appropriate.

It fits. This year I've felt like I could only really count on myself to get shit done. I'm in far better shape than I was and I got a steady job. My brothers seem to try(not purposely I hope) to reinforce my bad habits(over eating, bad food choices, procrastination, etc...) and they make things more difficult for me at home by not telling important things that they were told while I'm out for work. Lots of frustration and disappointment this year and I think it has been worth it.

It was a wonderful year for gaming, Sonic finally broke through the next gen ceiling, lots of autotune to go around, and this sounds good. You can come up with some bullshit metaphor in escaping from a city. I'm not into that kind of thing.

Although the context is appropriate. Adventure 2 was the last good game before the downfall ('08 for us, maybe), now we're in a time of revolution, probably like Unleashed right now.

EDIT: And I guess the lyrics fit. Sure.

Y'know, whenever I had a shitty time during the year, I would just put this on and everything would be better.

2011 was a weird year. I expect 2012 will be much worse. To prepare for 2012, I have fashioned a very stylish tinfoil hat as a disguise to keep the conspiracy nuts away. If I appear to be crazier than them it should keep conversation to a minimum.

This is what 2011 felt like to me. Read into it what you will. Happy New Year!
