This ought to be good. What do the people of the Escapist think whenever someone mentions Nintendo. Do you like them? Do you Dislike them? Me, I am bit of a strange one. Though I enjoy many other games from different companies, in the back of my mind I have accepted that Nintendo is the greatest video game company in the world and always will be. Why you ask? Hmmm...thats the thing I cant really explain it at the moment. I will wait on a couple of responses before I respond

I really dislike Nintendo.

1. They are focusing on gamers in the ages 12-15, so (call me imature if you like) but there are no blood, no really bad ass sceans and it feels like the script is stolen from an old batman episode.

2. They never really do something new, they just follow the same storys all over again. Mario, Zelda and Metroid. Sure these games is alot of fun but its not really impresive if your one of the biggest game sellers in the world to just make remakes...

3. They made Wii... I hate Wii! Wii is a sutpid excuse too be a gamer and stil bee cool enough too call other people neards and feel good about it. Serious when i play is just want to sit in my cough and just chill. Gamers dont want to bounce around, lookling as a dancer from riverdance.

I don't care.

I own a DS, and a Wii. Not because they are by Nintendo, but because the Wii provide lots of partygame fun and the DS allows for quick on-the-move gaming without having to wait while the level is loading.

I care more about game companies then about console manufacturers. Almost all platforms allow for great gaming, if the game developers are good enough. That why I tend to like developers like Valve and Troika Games, while I couldn't care less about the difference between Nintendo and Sony.

Edit: Rent, you are immature.

Nintendo and I broke up after the N64. We got back together for a short while during the whole Gamecube thing, but it proved to be a mistake. I've flirted with the Wii, but we're not seeing each other.

I'm something of a Nintendo fanboy.

Maybe it's because myself, and an awful lot of other people, simply would not be gamers if we'd never played a Nintendo game before.

I never really care about video games till I played Ocarina of Time, but when I did, suddenly, I'm caring about nothing but. It's my number one hobby now, and it really is thanks to a great game made by Nintendo.

But the thing is that, for a while now, Nintendo hasn't been doing anything of note in the software side of things. We had about twice as many great Nintendo first party releases in the first year of the GC then for the same year in the Wii.

And what's worse, we had at least triple the number of great games from third parties in the same time frame on the GC vs the Wii.

I haven't bought a Wii yet, though my Metriod addiction almost got through to me, and I'm sure the temptation of Brawl will see me shoving $279 into a vending machine to get a shiny new Wii.

But then I look on the store shelves and see nothing but bland game after bad game after pointless port, with only the occasional Nintendo game making an effort to be good, followed by a Nintendo made pointless port of a GC game they never released.

So label me as confused, cause I honestly can't say whether I still like them or not...

Quist, you do know that Nintendo makes games, right? Right?

As for me, I think they're at the least keeping pace with the console manufacturer standard (if there are enough players for there to even be a standard), and they have some really cool ideas that they demonstrate can be implemented well (coincidentally, they also demonstrate they can be implemented badly on occasion). I'd like to see what happens when they open up the Virtual Console thing to independent developers as they'd talked about before the Wii's release, though I expect that will be at least a few months yet before that comes to fruition. And let's not forget the DS's wireless method: Two people with two DS units can play the same game together so long as ONE player has the cart? That sounds like something you should have to install a modchip for, and it's so awesome that Nintendo seems to consider it normal behavior.

As a game developer, Nintendo has found itself a nice place to sit, and it ain't moving. Which is good and bad--the games they make are, on their own, quite good, make no mistake about that. But they're also fairly unchanging. Mario Galaxy is Mario 64 with weird gravity issues and timed powerups (Oh god, how I hate timed powerups). Zelda: Twilight Princess is Wind Waker, except you trade your boat for a dog (which, admittedly, is less annoying, except for the parts of the game where you can't STOP being a dog). Really, the only halfway original title I've seen Nintendo put out for the Wii is Super Paper Mario, and Nintendo doesn't seem to have been very clear on what it wanted that game to be. Was it an action game? Or did they want to drown you in talky-text?

(Granted I have no idea what Nintendo's DS offerings look like, as I have never owned one. Maybe they're better on that end? Meh.)

Nintendo is like those hot librarian girls. They're very different in style from the rest of their environment, and they look really good and are really fun for a while. But when you discover they don't actually have anything deeper, that they're not hiding anything under that nerdly child-friendly curiosity, that that's who they really are--then it's kind of ho-hum, no matter how good they look.

They impressed me with the Wii controls but that's about it. The rest of the console needed to be as decent as the controller, because as soon as the other consoles make even small price drops to their systems, you'll see gamers going for those instead.

When it used to be Sega or Nintendo I was always a Sega person. It felt like the Sega consoles even then, in the world of 2d graphics, were the more serious machines.

I have nothing against Nintendo, just to me, with every console war, they've always had the weaker machine. 64 vs Playstation, Gamecube vs Playstation 2 vs Xbox, and the current generation of systems.

I think they've finally made a machine that actually stands out as being different rather than just the kiddy option, but I feel that will wear off soon enough.

1. Manhunt 2, Scarface, Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Mortal Kombat: Armaggeddon, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles should sate your thirst for blood. Yes, I know, only 1 game on that list is Wii exclusive, but that doesn't change the fact the Wii does have those games.

2. Lots of companies are guilty of this, not just nintendo. I mean, a lot of the heavily anticipated games coming out soon or that are already out are sequels. GTA 4, MGS 4, Halo 3, Final Fantasy (what is it, 13? With all these sequels and spinoffs, they're catching up to Mega Man.) Tekken 6, Virtua Fighter 5.

3 When I'm playing the Wii, I sit in my folding chair and just chill. I only need to make slight, precise movements with my right arm in order to blow zombies heads off in Umbrella Chronicles, and occasional slashing movements with the nunchuck to slash with the knife. You only need to stand up if you're playing something like Wii Sports or WarioWare.

While I don't care too much for Mario, Metroid, or Zelda, I do like me some Smash Bros., StarFox, and F-Zero, as well as games that mainly use the remote for aiming and shooting.

EDIT: I own a Sega Master System, Turbo Grafx 16, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Wii. I don't think I would have regretted getting a PS2 instead of a Cube (for some Shinobi and Devil May Cry), but then again, I don't regret getting a Cube (F-Zero GX, Smash Bros, Paper Mario).

I think that Nintendo knows what style fits them . Despite having systems that people describe as kiddy and not mature enough they keep coming back. So they gotta be doing something right. People don't seem to look at systems objectively, instead they resort to opinionism saying a platform is a failure because they don't like it, or compare its sales to that of another platform's or worse yet its features....Dang brb

Nintendo is the easily overlooked girl in the room wearing T-shirt and jeans. She's modest, fun when you get her by herself, and you wouldn't feel weird about her meeting your mom. Then there're the other two in the cock-tease dresses with WAY to much make-up on. Boy don't they think alot of themselves? Sure they make look good in a Ron Jeremy video, but you'd never let them meet your parents.

I am a long-long-long-long time Nintendo fan who has recently become very wary of their products. I don't have a Wii, partly thanks to the shortage and partly thanks it having few worth while games. I do have some interest in grabbing one someday, thanks to Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros, No More Heroes, and Super Mario Galaxy, but those games aren't enough to make me fight some soccer mom for the last Wii at my local Gamestop.

I just feel that Nintendo has abandoned me, really. Though they still offer a few games I'd like to play and I'd love to give them a second chance, I can tell with the Wii and the DS that Nintendo is looking to please a new audience, and it's not the audience that grew up playing their games. It's a bit difficult to explain, as I won't completely write them off until I actually put some real play time into the Wii. Nevertheless, I know I will never be as much of a Nintendo fan as I was during the past three generations when they catered, for the most part, to real gamers.

The DS is mostly a lost cause for me. It gets a few good games a year, but only the third-party ones are worth any price. I've found that games like Metroid and Mario Kart have become serious rehashes on the DS and don't offer anything particularly interesting. I'm a major fan of the series presented, like Metroid Prime, Super Mario Bros., and Mario Kart; but the DS versions are extremely boring. That feeling may carry over into their corresponding Wii titles, but I won't make that judgment yet. The only thing that ever peaks my interest on the DS is a game put out by a third-party that has some unique twist or will surely have strong gameplay.

I guess to summarize, I'm on the fence but slowly slipping off onto the "don't like them" side.

They make good games but Nintendo seems to be a company based around doing the exact same things over and over. After a certain point it's hard to not get tired of yet anouther Mario, or Zelda or whatever horse they're beating to death next, even if they are quality games. Add to that the fact that what is original, the gesture controls for both systems, have ruined more games than they have ever actually helped. There are good things too, they just get obscured by the bad over time. Still happy I own the DS, wish I had the power to turn my Wii into 250$ worth of different video game equipment. Probably change my mind for one really good game(SMG wasn't it).

I haven't played much diverse games in like more than half a year, but that doesn't stop me from answering this thread.

Nintendo can go a long way with their new systems, but the dead horses they beat are solely for people who haven't played on of those titles yet. I can't think of any other way to explain that, which leads me to the new gamer point.

New gamers is all well untill you think about it, as shown in this thread. But even so, all the other games don't seem to innovate either. Maybe innovation to the point where it's all cinematic feeling, and you're part of the main story. Allthough, i just don't like photo realistic graphics, allthough it's fun for a while. As long as it's not my second life on earth or anything.

So i think nintendo for me would do well. Because i haven't played something that i haven't chewed and spit out and chewed again.

Did you get that one from the "Nintendo Troll Post Archive" or do you really believe it? If you really believe it, I pity you.

Nintendo made me a gamer and for that I thank them. Everyday. When I push the power button on my wii.

Strangely, I don't get tired from what other people call "replaying the same game". It's the added features and the feeling these games portray that get's me every time. It's the music, the look and feel. I swear, the first time I booted up Twilight princess I scented something... the same smell I senced when playing through Ocarina of Time the first time.

You don't hear people mentioning the "MGS feeling" - or Halo feeling. Or at least, not as much as classic or new-age nintendo games get to gamers. And as long as they make games around the same characters with the same outstanding quality what is there to complain about?

Not to mention that new high quality IP's arrive at every platform. The NES started it with Metroid, Zelda and Mario among others. The SNES had Super mario Kart. The N64 - Super smash brothers. The gamecube had Pikmin... we will just have to see and wait what the Wii will bring.

I like Nintendo. I don't mind more Metroid, Zelda or Mario (as long as the games are good) because I will never get tired of them. Nintendo always has something under their sleeves and it's always exiting to see what they will do next. And by the way ALL video game publishers and developers "beat on the dead horse", it's just that Nintendo has been around longer, but don't tell me that the Halo, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Metal Gear, Sonic, Dungeon Siege, Baldur's Gate, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc. franchises are not "beating on their dead horses" (and I'm positive that they will continue to do so in the years to come). So while a lot of people complain about "beating on the dead horse" you guys have to admit that ALL of you are gonna come back to join the beating (choose you're favorite franchise in that case).

i dont like, and never really liked Nintendo much, the only thing they got running for me is awesome SNES music :p

I own a gameboy, but that was only because i a crazing pokemon fan when i was a child.
Other then that, their games are 75% remakes, i never felt attracted to any of their franchises and like some have mentioned before, i just dont like the kiddy feel they have, call it immature but i just can't get much from their games.

There is one exclusion from this, though i think this franchise got killed long ago (cept for SSMB) KIRBY. Kirby is the shit, and will always be my favourite Nintendo character/franchise :)

and on that note, we hit the music: http://youtube.com/watch?v=EeIzqXIjhAg

Me and Nintendo had a far better relationship when I was a kid.

Nintendo always had and always will make great games, but I've never been terribly enamored by them. When most people use the term. "It's Zelda" or "It's Mario" to tell me why a game's good, my usual reply is "So?" The 64-bit installments of Zelda and Mario in particular are what drove me to PC gaming for the better part of a generation- any time I hear "It's like Mario 64" or "It's like OoT" tend to be instant put-offs... especially when it's true. (Someone loaned me Twilight Princess while I was playing through Okami- I got maybe three hours in total during all the times I'd try and set Okami down the play it, just to invariably go back to the far more interesting game before I had to give TP back two weeks later)

I still generally play their games quite a bit- for better or for worse, one of my closest friends can best be described as a Nintenzealot, so we see far more Mario Party and SSB:M then is really to my liking- but I generally don't feel like many of their recent releases are anything I have to buy a console over. I got a DS, but haven't bought a title for it in a while, and I don't feel a terrible urge to get a Wii when I can spend that $250 instead on some of the slew of good titles coming out for my 360. Especially when the Wii release list right now is SSBB, Mario Kart and... yeah.
