For the top 3 it has to be games that maybe not the most fun to play now but were important in some aspect.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PS) - I liked stealth before but this was the first game that I played that actually utilised it properly. It was also the game that had a story that made me just go wow.

2. Dune II (PC) - The first RTS I played and loved, got me hooked.

3. Phantasy Star Online (DC) - First proper online game I played, I spent so much time on it and don't regret it one second. Good thing was that about 7 of my friends also bought it at the same time so we were all talking/arguing about leveling, what was the best class etc. Amazing fun.

This isn't as easy as I thought. Ok, trying to think back to the games that sucked away hours of my time. Just the highlights, from off the top of my head...

Combat (Atari 2600)
Donkey Kong (ColecoVision)
Mail Order Monsters (Commodore 64)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
Phantasy Star (series, Sega MS/Genesis)
Wing Commander (series, PC)
Warlords/Warlords Battlecry (series, PC)
Star Trek Armada (PC)
Unreal Tournament (the 1999 or "Game of the Year" edition, PC)
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (PC)
Halo (series, Xbox/360)

And I have no idea what order I'd put them in. :p

1. Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox)
2. Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
3. Fable (Xbox) or Fable 2 (Xbox360) or Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
(I can't decide between the 3rd place contenders, they're all really close to me)

1. Advance Wars (any of them, although I prefer the early war-is-fun games to the recent war-is-hell game)

2. Baldur's Gate

Those two are easy. Now it gets tough. There are so many contenders! I think I'll go with...

3. Halo 3

Wait before you scoff at Halo! I'm talking about the whole package, not just the solo campaign. There's the single player, the multiplayer AND both the Forge and Theatre modes. The game has been a absolute lifesaver in one of my university courses, because it has a dedicated mode to allow you to make machinima very flexibly and easily; I'm actually making a documentary in it (on griefing). I think Halo 3 is one of the most polished games around, partly because each sequel was an evolution of its predecessor, rather than a total makeover. I taught my girlfriend to play FPS on Halo 3 online; she went from spinning around looking at the ceiling to a really competitive player, racking up the highest score in quite a few matches. I couldn't have done that with most FPS games, because the learning curve is too steep.

It just sucks that the hate on it has gotten so bad that I feel like I have to justify liking it. It's a tough crowd in here.

Other games that came close but just missed out: Star Control 2 (memories!), Deus Ex, Fallout, Civilization IV, GTAIV, Fire Emblem, Ocarina of Time and many others. If I could count the Orange Box as one game, that would have been top of the list.

After reading this thread, I think I have to find a copy of Jet Set Radio Future...

Noone bought JSRF, but fortunately many Xbox owners had the opportunity to play it since it was bundled with Sega GT as a pack-in shortly after the console's launch - which ensured the markey would be inflated with copies of it, too.

- Final Fantasy VII
- Shenmue II
- GoldenEye 007
- Super Mario World/Galaxy
- Pirates!

1. Metroid Fusion (GBA)
2. Fallout (PC)
3. Starcraft (PC)

I really wanted to put Halo, Half-Life, KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dead Space, and Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney on there, as those games put so many good moments into my memory, but... I've beaten Metroid Fusion more then 10 times, trying to get lower then 2 hours of playtime... I still try to this day.
