TBH, I've been meaning to compile the ungodly long list of games i've played and decide what the top few are... but I haven't quite done that.

Off the top of my head though...

Final Fantasy Tactics
Deus Ex
Neverwinter Nights
Katamari Damacy
Shatter

I'm not saying anyone's post isn't really legitimate, but I'm a little disappointed at the fact that so many lists are showing the same games over and over. Seeing tons of newer high-end 360 games being called again and again, I like Mass Effect, but top 5 ever? Not a chance.

Also, I can't really say all of those are definitely my top 5, but from what I could think of, these are some of the best.

Tactics is a masterpiece, best Final Fantasy by far. (This is all IMO, refrain from flaming needlessly, please)

Deus Ex is one of the more amazing games ever made, truly showing where RPGs can go... and, negatively, where they never seem to >_>

Neverwinter Nights, definitely one of my favorite RPGs ever. The class customization in this game is one of the most in-depth of any game I've ever played and it's just overall a great game. It has a lot of role-playing worth, but no one ever seems to take that seriously so w/e.

Katamari, I actually got from someone else, but it's one of those games that no matter what I was doing, I could turn on and it'd put a smile on my face. It's so bizarre and so enjoyable at the same time.

Shatter's game-play is honestly not THAT amazing, like I said not 100% on top 5, but it's music is amazing. I've listened to the OST every day for months.

---

I did notice a few good choices that I agree with though, the STALKER series, Diablo 2, Chaos Theory, etc.

These kinds of threads really rip my heart to shreds, but I'll try. No particular order:

Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II
Looking Glass Studios' hands-down best game, and in my opinion one of the best PC series of all time. The atmosphere, the story, the characters, the sheer glee you feel after looting someone's house of anything valuable without being detected and running off into the night. The monster levels aren't as good as the human levels, but the Haunted Cathedral remains the only game level to have ever made me scream like a little girl (I was running down a narrow spiral stairway, a Hammer Haunt was running up the same stairs... meeting him head on wasn't fun). And hey hey, Ken Levine of the late Looking Glass Studios also made...

BioShock
I don't care that people say it's over-rated, I loved it to bits. Very rarely have I ever been drawn into a world and a story so entirely. And the (harshly true) message aimed at video-gaming in general under-lining one of the best plot twists I've ever encountered cinched the deal. (I think it took me a good five minutes to stop shaking after the cut scene had finished.)

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal
My first really 'big' game as well as my first Bioware game. I loved the story, the interaction, the characters. I don't play much DnD but the game still made it easy to understand (as opposed to others of the same genre). I actually felt like I was a part of something, like the choices I made influenced something. Sure, a lot of games do that today, but this was The First One for me.

Assassin's Creed series
I'm a history nerd, so seeing alternate versions of it and traipsing about with historical figures is hilarious. The environment is beautifully rendered, the assassinations are interesting, and it's still fun to run around on rooftops like a moron.
Oh, and Ezio's claim that 'Montréal' is a part of France had me in stitches.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn
I enjoyed the rest of the series as well (those I've played, anyways) but these two really stood out. Path of Radiance for being so damn good and Radiant Dawn for providing a decent challenge. Fire Emblem always gives me a cast of characters I enjoy.

Runner-ups are Pokemon (Silver in particular), Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and the Zelda series, and a whole panoply of Bioware games (DA:O, ME2, NWN:HotU).

In a very specific order...

5. Pokémon Fire Red (Game Boy Advance/PC/Mac)
Yeah, probably beat this game at least 400 times. It was the first good video game I ever played. I still play on Visual Boy Advance, it is by far one of the greatest RPGs ever made, and it still is making kids like RPGs which makes me very happy, because most RPGs involve too much violence and boobs, so an RPG for the kiddies is definitely what the world needs, and now we've got it. :)

4. Portal (Xbox 360/PC)
Even one of Yahtzee's favorite games. I do feel it is a little short, but with the story that it has, any more levels would have made it too tedious. Such an eccentric, detailed, and all-around beast final level and the like 4 memes that came from it, how can you not have this on your list?

3. Halo: Reach (Xbox 360)
Exactly what the Halo series needed. Something to keep you playing. The other Halo games had you stop playing after a while because the only way to level was via 1 xp per game. With the introduction of challenges, commendations, and ways to get cR in Campaign, Firefight, Matchmaking, Forge and even Custom Games, it stands high. Plus the Campaign is jizzifying.

2. World of Warcraft (PC)
Most assuredly trademarked as a game for no-life nerds, this game still is one of the bests, imo. One of the largest world in an game, an RPG that you could literally play for 20000 hour and not get the full experience, this game is one of those that is looked at as, "Oh, that's WoW, its gay, so I'm not going to play it and get made fun of." Yeah, ok, whatever. You're missing out buddy; big time.

And finally, #1...

1. Borderlands (PC/Xbox 360/PS3)
Most of you are like WAAAAAT right now but seriously, this is the most underrated game of the decade. It has humor, it has great gameplay and sound. It's available on every major game system. While the story is retarded and the online is dysfunctional, it is one of those games that is by no means perfect and yet, you love. There are such things as games that are "too good." A game that is so good it's bad? Very possible. One of the best games that I hate is Red Dead Redemption. It is awesome, but I can't play it, it's too good. There are infinite things wrond with Borderlands, and yet... you can't say it's bad.

Irridium said:
1) Timesplitters: Future Perfect (all platforms) - greatest game ever made ever.
2) Timesplitters 2 (all platforms) - also greatest game ever made ever
3) Timesplitters (PS2) - started the franchise of the greatest games ever made ever
4) The Witcher (PC) - stat-based RPG, choices with actual consequences, interesting story
5) DOOM (the original, on PC) - after 16 years its still fun as hell

Yes I like Timesplitters to a point thats probably unhealthy, big whoop wanna fight about it?

I love plenty of other games a lot, but I can't mention them because just 5 games is just too restricting.
Sure. I'm enraged. You have to have variety in your lists.

Wait, let me just get my super awesome mega-varied list:

5) Call of Duty: Black Ops (X360)
4) Heavy Rain (PS3)
3) Mass Effect 2 (X360)
2) Call of Duty 4 (PC)
1) Modern Warfare 2 [footnote]Not trolling. 100% serious. And I played it on PC.[/footnote](PC)

Oh, shit, that kind of sounds fanboyish, too...
