Oh god I see alot of COD4s and Halo 3s.

I physically facepalmed.
Call of Duty 4 is a good game. A very good game actually, what's wrong with saying you enjoyed and liked the game?

Can't say crap about Halo 3 because I didn't exactly play it that much. Got bored of it quickly.

My list: Call of Duty 4
Rome: Total War
Age of Empires 1(Played it a lot has a kid)
Nox
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Why because people like the games
No because they obviously haven't played better games which is a shame for them.
Better games in what way? What are the better games in your eyes?

Gran Turismo 4
I have sunk so many hours into that game, including completing all the 24 hour races, it's not perfect, the AI is terrible, there's no damage and only 6 cars on track but that doesnt matter because it's all about sheer driving pleasure, even now I can still plug in my G25 wheel, select the Caterham Fireblade and just do laps of Fuji for hours trying to beat my best time.

GTR2
I wanted to be a racing driver as a kid, then I grew up and realised I couldn't, then I realised this was the next best thing, the physics and handling are really realistic and there's nothing more fun than racing 60 cars all 500bhp+ around spa.

Team Fortress 2
The only FPS I can spend long periods of time on, it's so well balanced to allow people who are usually terrible at FPSs, like me, to find their feet and acctualy get some kills. The unique graphics and quirky humour make it just about the perfect FPS IMO.

Rome Total War
Hopolites. mmmmmmmm.

Oblivion
I spent so long playing the 360 version and even then it was one of my favourite games, then I got the PC version with the add ons (official and unofficial) and, just wow, it adds so much to the game.

and honourable mentions go to:
Spirit Of Speed 1937
Need For Speed Underground
Fable
F1 Challenge 99-02
Worms
Toca 2 Touring Cars
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Project Gotham Racing 4

I go for replay value and overall enjoyability. Graphics are unimportant if a game has no gameplay value, and the greatest storyline in the world is useless if the game is only fun to play through once.

That being said:

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario RPG
Sonic 3 (with Knuckles)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Beatmania IIDX Distorted

I hate trying to decided because there are so many good games that I love. Anyway, five picks are.

1: Team Fortress 2
2: Marvel vs Capcom 2
3: Spiderman 2
4: Castle of the Winds 2
5: One Must Fall: 2097

Lot's of 2...

Edit:

Honorable mention: Pokemon Crystal, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Oblivion
Wow... other people have played Castle of the Winds... Now I don't feel so geeky. I used to love freeware games (Castle of the Winds, Raptor: Call of Shadows, AD&D: Death Knights of Krynn were my three favorites.) back when I was rocking windows 95 on an old 486... Those were the days...

I simply can't rank my top games of all time, so I'll list them in chronological order by release date. I have two lists, pre-2000 and post-2000.

1. Super Mario Bros. (1985): What can I say?
2. Tetris (1986): Tetris is just Tetris. Like Mario, nothing negative can be said.
3. Crystal Quest (1987): The most difficult game ever made. I can say without hyperbole that no one has ever beaten the original version's 255 challenging levels. The 360 remake is much, much worse.
4. Super Mario World (1991): Oddly, I didn't play this game until the late 2000s, but I still play it now.
5. Nanosaur (1998): The best third-person shooter ever. The day OSX stopped being compatible with this game was the day Apple died for me.

After 2000:

1. Pokemon Gold (and Silver) (2000): Simply the best Pokemon game in almost every measurable aspect.
2. Battlefield 1942 (2002): The most well-balanced FPS ever.
3. Impossible Creatures (2003): Relic's Insect Invasion mod finally gave this game the infinite replayability it deserves.
4. Left 4 Dead (2008): Good balance, great online play, amazing voice acting, and you shoot zombies.
5. Fallout 3: Broken Steel (2009): Vanilla Fallout 3 is several degrees worse, because the level cap is too low and the ending is terrible. Broken Steel fixed every flaw and made FO3 the game it deserved to be.

Wow. Sorry my list is so long, but I felt narrowing down both old and new games into a list of 5 would be impossible.

Oh that's easy. How about;

COD- Best single player of the series with loads of memorable epic moments rather than a sniper mission and a nuke, and the game wasn't stale and reskinned.

COD United Offensive- Best multiplayer of the series and wasn't a huge spraying, grenade spamming fest full of kids

COD2

And that's just from the same series. I can go on forever.

As you can see, I like RPG's alot. You might also notice a lack of nintendo systems after the N64. That is because nintendo abandoned us with the N64, and I don't see myself coming back to a nintendo system any time soon. I guess I also left out the 32X and the sega cd... not really because they were garbage. Handheld systems were ignored for the large part as well because having to read large amounts of text on a small screen is a silly idea.

Halo 3 was one of the diffinitve FPS games on consoles as it introduced new features that weren't that popular like the regenerating shield(health) mechanic, you mentioned grenade spamming in cod 4, that only ever happens to me occasionally even less so now as the noobs that do that have moved to world at war, I think that cod 4 still offers one of the best mmultiplayer experiences online and took the gameplay aspect into another direction for the call of duty franchise opting to go for modern combat rather than world war 2.

Also what was so crap about the single player in cod 4?
