In my day, we didn't have these fancy Sound Tracks, and by golly we liked it that way!! *waves fist impotently*

In all honesty, my vote would be cast for Donkey Kong Country. It was the first game I played that I really was like "WOW" to the sound track.

Oh boy! I like these threads. :D

1. Persona 4 - It's just fucking perfect. You have rock, j-pop, orchestral; there's just something for every one.
I'm allowed to include this version since it is in The Golden.

2. Persona 3 - Very dark and catchy music. More j-pop and rock.

3. The Binding of Isaac - The music invokes the feeling of heaven and hell at the same time. Plus, if you don't have The Binding of Isaac, go to Steam and buy it now. It's only $5.

4. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - A classic in musical direction. It's just impossible to not like this stuff.

5. Paper Mario & The Thousand Year Door - Very up-beat. Fits the cheerful, silly tone of the game.

Let see-
It's such an atomsphere like soundtrack!
The eletronic tune and industrial like tone sound so very nostalgia to the retro games in the 80's/ 90's
What can I say? It's very catchy!
It's a sad and haunting theme which also sound majestic which competely fit the tone of that place!
This music is very good for a new situation had arise and you as the commander must think fast to counter/ engage it!

1. Medal Of Honor Frontline

Oh Medal Of Honor what have you become?
That was one of my favorite levels in the game, I always tried to keep my British squad mates alive, I'd even restart if too many died. The music is so atmospheric in that part, its awesome. Thanks for bringing me back some good childhood memories.

Mine are, in descending order
This was the first world war two game I played and the music always complemented and reinforced any emotion I felt during a mission. From the heroic trumpets from main theme while charging up Omaha beach to the somber strings that flow along as I walked through a bombed out city. Also Michael Giacchino is awesome in general.
A space opera soundtrack that is up there with that of star wars on the epic scale as far as I'm concerned
Best soundtrack from an atmospheric perspective, the music melds into the background and becomes part of the environment like wind or rain is. I can't name another example like it in a game
The only soundtrack I actively listen to for the sake of listening to it. It also is very different than anything I had heard in music. It's hip hop, middle eastern, and country music all mixed together to create some violent bass tracks and flowing melodies using an acoustic guitar. Some of my friends didn't even believe me when I told them it was a game soundtrack and not some super underground band.
1)
Halo 3 ODSTIt gave me a true feeling of being all alone in the world.The sweeping piano and lone alto sax gives the music a great film noir feel and alone the music is calm and eerily soothing. It is by far my all time favorite.

I highly suggest all passersby stay a while and listen to these.

1. Anno 2070 - Dynamedion made this, along with a large number of other fantastic soundtracks.

2. Paraworld - Dynamedion again. Beautiful, easy to listen to music.

3. Age of Empires - MIDI classics.

4. Guild Wars 2 - Despite the fact that they all sound the same after a while, these are very good musics.

5. Gothic 3 - surprisingly good, all things considered.

1. Dragon's Dogma. This game has the Shadow of the Colossus thing going on where you would be traveling in silence (or as silent as it can get with the pawns following you around) before a cyclops would turn up in the road and the music would swell and become loud and chaotic untill the threat was dealt with. But really, this is why it comes first:

2. Dark Souls. This game has a very different approach to battle music. While it isn't above big sounds for its boss fights, I cannot recall any time the music really picked up. To give a good example, does this sound like music to be played during a final boss fight?

3. Halo Series. People have already brought this up so I won't post any music.

4. Devil May Cry. A game like this knows what soundtrack it needs. This:

5. Skyrim. Why?

1. Rock Band 1, 2, 3
I'm always adding to my music library with dlc and songs that I hear from this game. I have discovered bands and albums ever since Rock Band 1. Plus it's super fun.

2. DJ Hero 1 and 2
This is as close to DJ'ing that I can get, plus the music appeals to the electronic side of my musical taste.

3. Tony Hawk Pro Skater
THPS 2 was the best soundtrack to me, but all of the others always had a few songs that just stuck with me through my childhood. THPS 2 introduced me to Avenged Sevenfold and Pappa Roach. So...yeah.

4. Saints Row 1, 2, and Third (lol)
I always drove around the longest route and avoided fast travel just so I can listen to the in-game radio! It had a pretty broad choice.

5. Any Megaman Game
Megaman X has a special place in my heart, but others always got me into the game a bit as well.

Yes and they do that with every song. Each one painting an emotion. Even the damn club song, which does a good job of trying to escape the unease with joy. Trying to run away from reality, only for a second. Mass Effect 3, so many emotions. It is space opera.

Red Dead Redemption does a good job of the feel, which is why I gave it honorable mention. Though I think Gunslinger does it better. This might be just because of different taste, or because of being raised on different western movies. Red Dead Redemption being The Searcher and Gunslinger being Duck, You Sucker. I like Duck you Sucker more is all.

How has there been no mention of Bastion, yet?
The lack of Bastion disturbs me (except for one mention) I mean when I first heard build that wall it was amazing

In no real order:
5. Bastion(obviously)
4. The World Ends With You
3. Fire Emblem
2. Uncharted 2
1. Super Smash Brothers Melee/Brawl

And super secret number 6 because I'm such a rebel is Banjo Kazooie/Tooie

I'd go into detail but I'm seriously tired

EDIT: Oh snap I forgot Red Dead Redemption. AMAZING MUSIC. The moment you step foot in mexico, the time going to your wife. And the end credits... soooo good

Well, if I have to pick individual games, it would be games from two franchises, so I'll go by franchise.

<spoiler=5. Beyond Good and Evil>Christopher Heral outdid himself here. The game covers a huge range of emotion, and his music covers that range beautifully. Whether it's a grimy club song with a ridiculously catchy hook:

<youtube=YaAchdFbUqA>

...to intense chase sequences with speed percussion and driving rhythms accompanying:

<youtube=FzHeV39jgWY>

...to brilliantly simple and pleasant moments of rest:

<youtube=8y_TEe8Bd58>

...to complete balls-out WTFery:

<youtube=yYiuVBY19QI>

...Beyond Good And Evil's soundtrack has you covered.

Man, I love Slaughterhouse Scramble. I don't even know why.

<spoiler=4. Myst - Robyn Miller and Tim Larkin>I've mentioned my unending love for Myst before. One of the many, MANY reasons for my love, as well as the games' place in the hall of gaming classics, is the utterly surreal and oboe-driven music of the first two games.

Robyn Miller is to blame.

<youtube=xkniYzS16Cc>

Violins and oboe, swapping with timpani and string section? Madness! Then in come the harps and harmonies, people, this is written in MIDI. MIDI, DAMMIT!

<youtube=ITObGdvx7x4>

In Riven, Miller branched into more tribal sounds, to add to the air of the game (which centers on a rapidly collapsing primitive-ish civilization). The results are bloody spectacular.

Plus, he bloody knew how to set up the entrance of the villain.

<youtube=UwVIwTAwZ-4>

I would feel guilty if I didn't include the work of Tim Larkin, too, who did Uru and Myst V. Unlike Miller, he went for significantly more ambient themes, which had less musical patterns and recognizable rhythms to distract you from the area you were exploring.

<youtube=WpIf1nFpa7E>

Delightful. He fully understood what he was writing for, and showed mastery of his instruments, even though he didn't have a real orchestra to work with (tragically).

<youtube=qqCp6uVDAE0>

Also worth mentioning is that he shared Miller's affinity for melancholy oboe, so there's that. :p

<spoiler=3. Tropico>I don't speak Spanish very well... at all. That doesn't stop me from adoring the Caribbean flavor that added so much personality to the first, third and fourth Tropico games.

<youtube=EJ2rw1bDZBs>

Tell me you aren't tapping a foot or bobbing your head to that. TELL ME.

The happy and rhythmic tracks really contributed to the inherent surreality of the series: You're ruling an island with an iron fist, squelching rebellion, throwing the election, and many other classic dictator-ish things, and yet the game maintains a bouncy and pleasant look, playstyle and sound.

VERY bouncy and pleasant sound.

<youtube=tk-eEzQa67g>

I swear I stop the game every damn time that song comes on. Every. Time.

It's all just so... catchy and happy. A rarity in games in the first place, it's especially rare for it to be done so well.

<youtube=Vm_jift5QMM>

The only reason this doesn't come in higher is because there's only 15 tracks or so per game, which play on infinite loop.

(NOTE: Tropico 2 was about pirates instead of dictatorships, and had significantly less awesome music. I don't know why.)

<spoiler=2. Silent Hill>No words needed, we've all heard "Room of Angel" and have experienced the surreal sadness that Akira Yamaoka has no difficulty instilling.

So have it again.

<youtube=9IA-TRh3zlc>

But wait, you say. That's just his vocalized tracks for particularly poignant cutscenes! What of his ambient in-game stuff? Are THEY any good?

The answer is yes.

<youtube=WShknpNpHbY>

The chills won't go away!

He's definitely not all bombast, either. He manages to draw chills and tension from comparatively quiet accompaniments, as well.

<youtube=nA33byumvFM>

Repetition is the key to holding up a good atmosphere, a key that Akira knows well and wields well.

But not all the Silent Hill music is subtle(ish) and designed to draw chills through sadness and feelings of fear. Sometimes, it wants nothing more than to scare you so hard your pants turn brown.

<youtube=JEpm82V9fHU>

Sweet dreams.

<spoiler=1. Myst - Jack Wall>Hey, you say, you already included Myst! CHEATER!

Hear me out on this one, and understand why I put Jack Wall's work on Myst on a different plain than Miller or Larkin.

More specifically, listen to these twenty seconds.

<youtube=qjiBnoNMbBM&start=246>

The defense rests.

Jack Wall did a positively PHENOMENAL job on the Myst series. Not only did he get an actual orchestra, he upped the dynamics and scope on everything, while still maintaining a "Mystlike" feel.

<youtube=yRAKzyOW6t4>

Richer bass, rhythmic sectionals, ridiculously ambient focus, and throwbacks to the original score, this soundtrack has it all.

All of it.

Much of the stuff he wrote for Myst was significantly more intense than what Miller or Larkin put out, partly because of the live orchestra, but holy cow, does it ever contribute to the game's atmosphere. Myst III and IV felt more frantic and dangerous than any of the games ever felt. Many will (correctly) claim that this is because Myst is not meant to be frantic, but it made III and IV hook you all the harder when their themes coursed through your ears.

<youtube=qC54mBUbRmo>

Let's also not forget the fact that Myst III had Brad freaking Dourif play the bad guy. So Jack Wall also had the honor of writing the music that Brad Dourif got to have a massive breakdown to.

<youtube=qzdEcySWf9M>

I rest my case, this soundtrack is a work of damned art.

I can't really think of five, all I know is I still get goosebumps and feel like jumping in a M4 Sherman when hearing the BF1942 soundtrack.

5. No More Heroes - this game's soundtrack was just as cool, bizarre, and stylized as the game itself. Considering Akira Yamaoka had a hand in the soundtrack, it's no wonder it was bloody fantastic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TX9o6uZnEs
4. Assassin's Creed 2 - this one had the best soundtrack of the series, in my opinion. It really helped set the atmosphere and made me feel that much more involved. Beautifully composed and overall really memorable.

3. Deadly Premonition - I'm one of the few who genuinely enjoyed this game, and the soundtrack is so ridiculously hype that it'd be a crime to leave it off. One of the most catchy tunes ever came from this masterpiece, and while it's probably chipper enough to give you diabetes, it's part of a 'horror' game. The soundtrack goes from peachy-keen whistling tracks to spastic tenor saxophone blasts to deep, sultry melodies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhfpVwdDzbU
2. Silent Hill 2 - again, Akira Yamaoka is plainly a genius. I love his collaborations with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, but SH2's soundtrack was, like the game itself, the best in the series. It's just SO GOOD.

1. Mass Effect 3 - In ME1-2, the soundtrack was fantastic with generally one real standout ('Vigil' and 'Suicide Mission', respectively). But in the final installment, there were so many standouts I can't name just one. 'A Future for the Krogan' gave a fleeting sense of hope, 'I Was Lost Without You' is a bittersweet melody, and 'An End, Once and For All' is a goddamn punch in the gut every single time I listen to it. While ultimately not as "sci-fi" sounding as it's predecessors, ME3's soundtrack is so emotionally packed that it warrants the top spot.
