People always think "A gun" straight away, either that or a Katana. A bit silly if you ask me, if you want to kill thousands of unarmoured shambling corpses who's main purpose is to BITE you, why not wear something that stops them from doing that, a suit of armour of your choice should do well, and maybe a few tools to help you out, tools that don't run out of ammo ;D

I doubt he would have a problem with a few zombies.

Call me old fashioned.

If it could be anything? Then it's gotta be a revolver and bog standard shotgun. All while sporting a rockin' pair of aviators ;) However I'm more concerned about the necromorph outbreak.. Anyone got a plasma cutter handy? I doubt a shotgun's gonna slice the butter in this case..

in terms of personal weapons, I'd say something that was chambered for a 7.62mm NATO round (like an M14), semi-automatic, with an ACOG or red-dot sight for my primary, a mossberg 500 Tactical 8-shot for a secondary, and something like a kurkuri or a mini-machete for a backup. Thankfully, my town is home to Colt Canada, who produce most of the rifles and shotguns used by the Canadian military. Hello stockpile!

Although, if we're really going to go balls-out, I'll take an Ohio-class submarine any day

The rules are three is the max. And you must have one sidearm. Mine are a Desert eagle. A Revolver (any kind). And a Spas-12
.300 Remington ultramag so I can kill them as soon as I see them, machete, and longbow.
You can see anything smaller than an elephant at 1100 meters? (the intended range of .300 RUM)

I have 20-10 vision (can see at 20 feet what most need to be within 10 feet to see) and I cannot make out any man-sized objects at that distance. In fact anything person standing more than 1000 feet (300m) away is almost impossible to spot unless highly contrasting colours - such as a Red Tunic on a green-grass battlefield.

That's why in the 20th century there was a switch from high-power cartridges to sub-machine-guns then later more ideally light rifles and assault rifles firing shorter range rifle rounds. This followed after armies of the world abandoning bright uniform for muted colours or camouflage patterns. Colourful uniforms were originally used to make it easier for a battlefield commander to direct troops literally by looking at where they were.

While bright uniforms made sense when muskets had a range of about 100-feet - you'd be seen no matter what you wore - it became a liability when rifles were widely introduced increasing range to thousands of feet, it came to a head in the 2nd Boer war when the Brits had bright Red tunics and white helmets, while the Boer (in more muted colours) devastated British with very long range rifle fire against such noticeable targets.

There is a possibility that uniform colour may come full circle. With increasing emphasis on air-power, thermal imaging to defeat the bulk of enemy forces and then a longer low-level insurgency, camouflage has lost much of its purpose. Camouflage is great advancing over a controlled battlefield, but in unplanned insurgent ambushes the greater concern is friendly fire. Camouflage does not help with that, it makes it harder to positively identify people and it may just be that the soldier of the future adds colourful bands or reflective stripes to their field overalls just to reduce the fear of friendly fire.
It sounds crazy but a young 19 year old fresh out of training rooting out Taliban from a village after an ambush knows that he cannot hesitate if he comes face to face with the enemy... yet to avoid killing a comrade he must hesitate to distinguish the movement caught in the corner of his eye of friend from foe. When you are scared to death in that split second a helmet looks a lot like a turban, an L-85 rifle looks a lot like an AK-47...
Not if your unit have agreed to wear distinctive colours, that in a Millisecond defuse fear of them being the enemy.

Closer to home, how many online shooters do you play where you depend on a red or green name hovering over allies to distinguish them from enemies? These games copy the camouflages of real military forces who in fact dedicate a huge portion of their training just to trying to prevent friendly-fire in close combat engagements.

Zombie or not, you're not going to spot them beyond 1000 feet (300m) unless you have:
-a good pair of binoculars regularly scanning a limited area
-an elevated position, beyond the "local horizon" or ground clutter
-the individual is making little attempt to conceal themselves such as avoiding the shade and silhouetting them self

.300 RUM is probably over-powered and over-specification for zombies unless you are clearing an WIDE area from an elevated position. Definitely don't use it in doors when clearing out a house, you fire this gun from the hip inside and you're ears will be ringing for a week. The blast from a cartridge like this is like a showstopper 4th of July fireworks.

And then you've got to reload. The Pressure on this cartridge will make the bolt so stiff you'd think the weapon was jammed, definitely not very quick to cycle. Unless the rifle is VERY well made which means it'll probably be heavy as hell.

The danger with zombies is not range. A zombie 1/4 mile away is no problem, the problem is you will have them up close and LOTS of them! Longbow and machete... hmm, you know you could ask for a submachine gun in your "dream zombie defence wishlist"?
The .300 RUM was first produced in the early to mid 1900's, long after the bright uniform went the way of the dodo. Also, just because you can use it at 1100 meters, doesn't mean you can't use it at 200-300 meters.

It also has enough power to ensure complete destruction of the head. as far as limited sightlines, that's what optics are for. Also, at 200-300 or even 400 yards, I could use a 30-06 or a .270 or even a 30-30 if I was a really good shot, but the .270 doesn't have enough punch to double as a weapon for hunting moose or bear or other super-large game(Neither does the 30-30 if we're being honest) and the others lack the super flat trajectory that I want so that I can set the rifle's scope for 200-250 yards and with very little adjustment hit anything from 100 yards to 300+ yards.

As for use indoors, I have no intention of limiting my mobility by being indoors. That plays to the zombies strengths. I plan to walk to isolated places in the Adirondack park(I live on the outskirts) where there are fewer people and therefore fewer zombies and looters. I plan to build a relatively simple shelter in the tree canopy so I can sleep safely and I want to be able to destroy the zombie as soon as I can detect it, so that it won't attract scavengers right to my shelter.
Yes, it's a little bit of overkill, but i'm going to be buying one this year or next year anyway, so i'll have it close at hand. Being pump action, it will have the rate of fire that I'm looking for and being clip fed I can reload quickly if I'm in a hurry, and it also has the Range to keep them at a distance.

Why the hell would I want a sub-machine gun? The emphasis is rate of fire well above the rate that you can accurately hit a target the size of a head, and they are much less useful for hunting, and you need lots of ammo. Spraying is not the solution to zombies, well aimed single precise shots are. If they're close enough for my longbow, I wouldn't want to announce myself with gunfire anyway.

A Glock 17. Firstly, I know how to handle it and hit stuff, so the familiarity means I won´t be fucking up shots with an unwieldy super powerful .50AE waste of steel most kids might pick up because it´s "kewl". Low recoil means that I can pop zombies far faster and reaquire a new target much quicker then anyone wielding a revolver with huge recoil. 9x19mm means I can salvage much deadlier ammo from Cops (Hollowpoints), and most shops ought to carry them (depending on region, I am assuming germany).
Decent to high (17 to 32, theres even drum mags for it<.<) magazine capacity means I won´t be running out of bullets when shit turns up side down and Zombies keep pouring out everywhere.
Polymere frame means it weights less, which is good, because I need to pack light.

That was just my sidearm, but will probably used more often then not, because it´s handy. Rifles get reserved for vantage points or defence or hunting.

Next, a Saiga 12. Semi-auto means quicker firing which of course comes in handy while opposing larger groups. Detachable box magazines of 5 or 8 shells means that reload is significantly faster. Kalashnikov system means reliability so it won´t break down too soon, and 12 gauge means that any hunting store should have plenty of ammo, and so should cops. The ability to use slugs for aimed shots at range and massive stopping power, as well as buckshot for much likelier headshots, is also a good option to have.
Also, hunting. I mean, at one point my supply is gonna run short. With this, I could both hunt birds, small game and even larger animals, or defend myself from the occasional "bear zombie"...

That should normally do it. Aside from other survival stuff like my trusty Böker Magnum knife, an E-tool, which can both be used as weapons in a pinch, I should be covered. A rifle is nice, but since I won´t actually WANT ranged engagements, and might not be that good anyway, exept maybe with a G36 because I already have experience on it, but those are hard to find. Maybe I could salvage one from the barracks around here, or a dead soldier, but that is not what I WOULD take...stoppingpower is way to low anyway.
I pack light...one pistol and one long gun, that covers me.

1 baseball bat or katana
2 glock (less backfire than a deagle)
my last weapon will depend on what kind of zombies they are

That gun from gears of war with the chain saw on it. ( I forget the name.) It combines an assault rifle with a chainsaw, two classic zombie killing weapons, it would be perfect.

Main - RRA AR-15 with an ACE ARFX skeleton stock and http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=527 that upper reciever. Lightweight, damned reliable, easy to clean. This is America, so fuck me with a rake sideways if I can't find replacement parts should anything eventually fail. Accurate, maneuverable, with common ammunition that's more than capable of dropping people, zombies, and small to medium game.

Sidearm - Glock 17 or Browning High-Power. 9mm is one of the world's most common rounds (right up there with the 7.62x39). Plus both are pretty damned good guns, very common with tons of after-market / replacement parts.

Tertiary: Gurkha Kukri. Kills people dead, opens doors, cuts down trees and brush, and can be used to skin and butcher at need.
