A good old Remington 870 shotgun, with a variety of rounds (slugs, buckshot etc) for unforseen circumstances. Although it's unoriginal I'd have it slung over my shoulder on a strap.

A great many options:

Spiked bronze gauntlets
Bastard sword with an etched blade
Two round shields with the outer edges being bladed or spiked
An ornate compound bow with bladed arrows
cyanide/arsenic patches (think a nicotine patch, only 100 times stronger and faster.)
Smoke grenades and impact detonation explosives

It all depends I suppose.

If I am fighting in an army vs arrows and melee (round shields) it is different than a fight against ten armed ruffians on the street (compound bow with gauntlets as backup.) This too is different then the infiltration and assassination I conduct in an office building (silenced pistols, cyanide patches, and the previously described explosive combination.)

A wakizashi, a shortsword, or a knife. Nothing can beat those if the wielder is competent.

Except, you know, a gun.

What do you think I am doing? Waving around a blade and telling you I am going to attack you personally? No. I would wait until I was next to you to attack you where a gun has lost it's advantage. Unless you of course you are just shooting people randomly in the street which is the best way to get killed by s.w.a.t. (or someone else) in my opinion. Why does no one know about the 21-foot rule?

Well if its a book/anime/movie/game about what id WANT my character would have infinate knowledge. Having done so, he would have created an opening in his palm similar to that of the monk from Inuyasha. Except he can open and close said portal on command. ANYWAY the portal would not suck things in, it would be essentially storage. Id use a sword. A long sword. About 8ft in length, by say 1 and half feet in width. Id wish it to be made of unbreakable substance, light weight, and able to manipulate the elements at my beck and call.
